A million bloody nil. We really should do these.

If they play with the same intensity as they have done against Arsenal and United, I can't see this lot getting a sniff.

A to and fro game with not much between the sides, but us to win it 2-1
Gabby and Benteke.

After the match a possible sacking for the baldy bastard from Masterchef.

If we play like we did yesterday we should win it. Can't see there being much of an attendance with it being on telly. I think we'll win 2-1. Benteke and Holman.

I saw the highlights of their game against Wigan on MOTD and they got murdered down their left hand side. Beaseajour in particular looked pretty decent and caused them a few problems.

I looked at our bench yesterday and there was'nt really any flair on there to bring on and change the game so i'd find a place for Carruthers in the next couple of games.

My team:
-----------Guzan

Lowton-Baker-Clark-Lichaj

Bannan-Westwood-Holman

Weimann-Benteke-Gabby

I'd rest Stevens for QPR, Holman earned his place yesterday in my opinion.

We need to win this game. Holman or Ireland should come in for KEA. Bent at the very least has to be on the bench. As I say, must win.

As I posted on another thread, this won't be easy. With the exception of Chelsea away on the first day, Reading have either drawn or been narrowly beater (never by more than 1 goal) this season. I think it will be tight, and either 1-1 or 2-1

I think Lambert will freshen it up a bit. Wouldn't be surprised to see Holman / Ireland / and potentially Delph and Bent coming in. Bannan might be a bit knackered.

I wonder if we could go:

Guzan - Lowton, Vlaar, Clark, Stephens - Ireland, Westwood, Holman - Weimann, Benteke, Agbonlahor

But I suspect we'll stick with two holders in there, with Delph (or KEA) potentially coming in for Bannan due to tiredness.

Absolutely HAVE to win this and if we play with the same high tempo as we did yesterday we will. The danger is thinking just 'cos they're in the shit (like us) we just have to turn up to get three points. McDermott will see us as a chance for them to get a win just like Adkins did.  Need to get right at them from the start. A dry night and 3-1 to us

There is no way Lambert or the players will take this lightly. They know how vital this game is, and Lambert will have them raring to go. Anyone who looks jaded or showing the wrong body language will be replaced .....

A great thing to look forward to on a cold, dark November Tuesday night in the busy period for anyone still in work. It beats watching the usual crappy repeat or dull new drama or flippin antiques or cookery show. Despite the worry, the scares and the pathological inability to create goalscoring chances.

This is incredibly reminiscent of that Bolton game last season. Though we've come on leaps and bounds since then, and I think we have more than enough to beat this Reading team, and if we play anything like we did in our last two home games then we'll sweep them aside. I think the only things to worry about are overconfidence and fatigue.
Title: Re: Aston Villa v Reading Pre-Match Thread

3-1 win.

Anyone see the Reading game yesterday? They conceded 3 at Wigan and Wigan could easily have scored more.

When you look at the back 4 it's not hard to see why, Chris Gunter, Kasper Gorkess, Sean Morrison and a left back who's worse than Warnock imo in Nicky Shorey still amazingly forgeing a premier league career.

That's a really really slow and lightweight back 4 they have so I'd keep the front three as I fancy them to cause Reading all sorts of problems with the strength and pace in there.

Only worry I have is Jason Roberts is a niggly forward who'll back into our defenders all night long. Would be a worry without Vlaar as I remember last season in the bolton game when Davies came on in the second half and he bullied our defence which turned the game.

The Southampton win over Newcastle puts us back on bottom 3 although only 6 points from the top 10 - things are tightening up down there and a few clubs are being dragged into it - the next 3 games are huge for us.

If we're going to stay clear of trouble then a home game against Reading needs to return 3 points. TBH, any of the possible three results would hardly surprise and Reading seem to have picked up a little recently. Hoping for to win by a goal or two but a frustrating draw is probable.

We must win on Tuesday.

And if we win on Tuesday we're only 1 point behind them and they've lost some pretty winnable games in recent weeks. You look at that team today without Cabaye and Ben Arfa and it doesnt make good reading. It wouldn't be the biggest surprise in the world to see them down in it come the end of the season imo

At this point of the season I don't think it is quite as important as the Bolton match was and I would liken it more to the midweek game against QPR last season.  That ended 2-2 and I can see a similar result on Tuesday, especially if Vlaar is out.
Title: Re: Aston Villa v Reading Pre-Match Thread
Post by: Diablo on November 26, 2012, 12:45:52 AM
If Vlaar is out I can see us getting bullied at the back - really hope this isn't our QPR Southampton game where QPR froze (they didn't turn up despite knowing the magnitude of the match) and well, you know the rest (although obviously I don't think we're gonna get rid of our manager and I don't think our team are a load of under performing mercenaries). I've a feeling we may be in for a rough ride Tuesday - hope I'm wrong.

Sad thing is you can imagine all the Reading fans saying the exact same thing as we are....

"Must win, a winnable game, there not very good, if we play like we did against x team then we should beat them!"

Villa have the habit of playing to the level of who were are playing so I think a nervous 1-1 or a narrow 2-1 victory

We're going to have to start winning games at some point and this is the best opportunity to start doing it. In recent history, we haven't been very good at grabbing opportunities, so I'm going for a draw. I hope I'm wrong.

Gabby goes for games without looking like scoring, Weimmann looks like he will score every game.

Lichaj

Holman
Ireland
Westwood
Bannan

The difference seems to be that the players are much more cofident and in good spirits than last season when they seemingly didn't even try.

After getting shafted against Man City the players didn't collapse - they again played well against Arsenal and that shows for me that players have belief in themselves and should have what it takes to win the game against Reading, QPR and Stoke.

What worries me is they don't seem to be able to consolidate on a good performance. It seems to be one step forwards and two steps backwards,it's like it takes a thrashing to bring out a good performance. I really hope we can push on on Tuesday

If Vlaar is out we need extra height at the back, so I'd go Lichaj Lowton Clark Baker across the back, and Holman for KEA, to play at the point of the midfield diamond with Bannan back alongside Westwood, otherwise same as v Arsenal.  One nil Villa, Bent from the bench.

Even if vlaar is fit I think we might rest him as he won't be fully fit. It might be an idea to give maybe Albrighton, Baker, Delph etc. a game to keep us fresh and prevent further injuries. Whether we can afford to do so is another matter however.

Agree with all you have said except massive massive game bit. It's not that. Not now as it's only November. In April   with same League positions it could  be a massive massive game.
Our players need to take the field in a relexed state not under pressure.

4-3-3

Guzan

Lowton
Baker/Vlaar
Clark
Stevens

Holman
Westwood
Bannan

Weimann
Benteke
Gabby

I think with how hard Gab and Andy work, they're ideal foil for Benteke, or Bent if he gets back in, as they're both a little lazy at times.
Thought Bannan played very well and Holman too looks good in the centre. His energy is brilliant. Westy keeps things ticking over nicely. I think KEA has looked poor in the last couple of months. He was woeful against Arsenal. Very sloppy. Needs to raise his game.

3-0 Villa. It's a game we need to stamp our authority on and must win. I think we're due to tonk someone. There's a few awe inspiring games up Bentekes sleeve this season. Fancy him to turn it on tomorrow after a somewhat frustrating couple of games.

Benteke 2
Weimann.

We simply must win.
Vlaar will be out so I agree with others in that I feel Baker would be a good bet in the middle, especially to deal with that twat Roberts.
I think Lowton may be able to do a job there but he's better at right back.
I also think Bent will be re-introduced, probably from the bench.

Guzan
Lowton Baker Clark Stevens
Westwood Bannan
Weimann Ireland Gabby
Benteke

Given
Lichaj
Delph
Bent
Holman
Albrighton

Not sure it would be my chosen line up, but I think we will see (if Vlaar is out):

                   Guzan

Lichaj   Lowton    Clark   Stevens

        Westwood    Bannan

Weimann       Holman       Gabby

                   Benteke

With Vlaar out, I think it would be an ideal time to switch to a 3-5-2 formation, but I can't see that happening.

Its not gonna happen, but i'd love to see us go with Benteke and Bent up front,as the former has shown he can create chaos in the box, which Bent would thrive on.

And i'd like us to go with four across the midfield, which i think we could do without the middle being over run,as Bannan and Holman have the natural ability to drift in-field,and support Ireland and Westwood.

By John Cross | 25/11/12

Paul Lambert signalled the end of Darren Bent’s Villa career after telling the England striker he is now just a squad player.

Bent was furious after being left out again and this time did not even make the bench as Villa failed to score against Arsenal. Former Chesterfield rookie Jordan Bowery, a bargain £1m signing, was preferred on the bench as back-up to first choice striker Christian Benteke.

Bent is now desperate to get away in January and Lambert has now made their fractured relationship even worse by insisting the £22m record signing can like it or lump it.

When quizzed on choosing Bowery over Bent, Villa boss Lambert said: “That’s my decision. I’m the man that picks the team. Listen, it’s my choice and I’ve 26, 27 lads that I have to look after.

“Everybody’s in it together and I need everybody in it together. I know the disappointment when you don’t play, I know I was dropped about five million times, but that’s the nature of the game.

“If you could pick everybody you would. Darren’s still part of it but I've got 25, 26 guys to take care and think of.

“Darren’s fine. There’s nothing at all. The most important thing is Aston Villa Football Club.”

This should suit us and we can hit them time and time again on the counter.
3-1 home win.

Let's hope we see Bent back in some capacity for this one.

If  Lambert does not have Darren Bent on from the kick off (or at the very least on the bench) it will speak volumes about his man management skills. If I was Bent I would be thinking this guy cant stand me fair enough I'll go somewhere else come Jan 1st.

Just think if Arry signs Bent and Beckham, unlikely I know but possible, Benty's goals could put us down come May

I have a feeling he will play from the start tommorow night.

I think it would show how good his man management is, no one was moaning when he was freezing out Warnock and Hutton, if he does the same with Bent (if that's how Lambert feels) then surely he will earn more respect from the squad in showing he treats everybody equally, big name/transfer or not.

Reading always play 4-4-2 with two out and out wingers (McAnuff and Robson-Kanu).

We'll outnumber them in the middle so I'd bring in Ireland for this one.

I think the current front three will cause Reading's defence all sorts of problems so I'd stick with them.

Bent really should be on the bench though now he's fit just in case it's another Albion type game.

Title: Re: Aston Villa v Reading Pre-Match Thread

Are reading quite a physical side? I think I read that. Might be a problem for us at set pieces. Pretty nervous about this one. I think it's hard to argue we shouldn't stick to the way we've been playing, but . . .

I could see the sense in reverting to the diamond, bringing bent in alongside benteke, and getting Ireland and Holman into midfield, which would look reasonably creative. That way we could keep bannan and westwood in there but also add extra energy and numbers, Holman and bannan could shuffle over to double up on their wingers, and we rest weimann and gabby who both put in a real shift running down the lines on Saturday. It also means when we get the ball in the box for benteke bent - who should be really motivated - is right in the danger zone.

I've convinced myself that might be the right approach. The diamond worked well against 442 merchants Newcastle because it gave us midfield supremacy. And lambert does like to change it around.

If I were Lambert I'd keep news on vlaar on the down low unless he's definitely fit.  Could affect readin tactics.

Can't see Vlaar being fit for this one and Kendrick suggests in tonight's Evening Mail that if that is the case, Lowton will play at CB and Lichaj will come in at RB.  He also wrote that Dunne had suffered a setback with his groin injury and was going to have to visit a specialist.

I'm gobsmacked that for a game that most people agree is a must win that they are willing to make major changes in players and formation. PL seems to have found a formation that works for the players. It's caused problems for the big boys, why would we want to change it now? KEA out for Ireland, Lichaj in for Vlaar. That'll do thank you very much, let's not upset the balance.

All we needed on Saturday was a bit more creativity in getting the ball to our forwards, so swap out KEA for Ireland.  Vlaar out if injured, keep him on if not.  If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Agree totally Karl, making sweeping changes won't help. I would go Baker and Holman in for Vlaar and KEA and bring Bent onto the bench. Last half hour if a goal down the option to go long to Benteke and have Bent in the box might just scare a mistake or two.

3-1 win for Villa with Benteke, Weimann and Bent for us; McAnuff for them

I wouldn't tinker too much with the starting line up but if Bent is fit he has to be an option from the bench. Sell him if you want in January but picking an unproven Division 1 player like Bowery ahead of him is bordering on cutting your nose off to spite your face

Not felt this confident about us winning a league game for some time but think this is a real opportunity to build on the positive signs shown v Man U, Man Citeh and Arsenal

Last season we played brilliantly at Stamford bridge, before making one change and being played off the park by Swansea. Swansea had made 9 change or so and were just much fresher. Granted this is two day's rest, but I wonder whether the likes of weimann and bannan are up to another 90 minutes at the sort of intensity I think we nee to play at. Plus it will be a very different sort of game

He's big, strong and experienced. All the things our centre-backs (bar Vlaar) aren't. But you're right in that he's not a player we should be worried about.

Just had a quick peak at a Reading board though. They aren't confident at all:

We have to set about them and ensure we keep the ball. Westwood has a big part to play.

I would be tempted to go with Bannan, Westwood and Ireland as a midfield triangle, with Bent off Benteke and Gabby providing a bit of roaming width.

A must win game, if not for the points at this stage then for the simple fact that if we cannot beat one of the very worst teams (if not the worst) in the league at home then we're in huge trouble.

Let's not scrape a 1-0 either, let's get a really good win, with some goog goals and bring the feel good factor back.

Fed up of going into games, knowing we have no chance, this game offers a chance to assert ourselves.

I do expect changes, need to rotate a bit, a lot of young players in there.
Perhaps Ireland and maybe Bent will come in.

It is Reading I guess. I know they got a lot of stick in the second half of last season after their away support ballooned as a result of their good form and promotion push. 3/4/500 is probably their usual level when stagnating in the Championship.

I don't think any games can be described as 'must win' this early in the season.
But looking at the league table it would really set us back to lose it, it is a biggy no doubt

I personally think we are in good shape for the rest of the season. But games like this can really get the confidence growing with 3 points. On the other hand they can become a massive downer if things don't go we'll

So most important game for a while

Just out of interest, why are we playing on Tuesday?  We have always traditonally (with a few exceptions) played our midweek games on Wednesdays.

Think it was Mcleish`s idea to play Tuesday`s and Lambert has obviously kept the same decision .....

Completely unrelated but was watching a few videos of our team under BFR, they had such a great personality about it, loved being a fan in those days. VP has bever been the same since those days in my opinion

It allows the Villa fans after enjoying a great home victory to give a big cheer when the stadium announcer reads out the score from Blackpool. Well that and the demands of TV.

3-1 Villa win. Gabby, Bannan and Holman.

The football we played in 92/93 is the best football I've ever seen at Villa. Fantastic attacking football with spectacular goal after spectacular goal. I'll always have a soft spot for Big Ron.

I'm excited and nervous for tonight. We've had a real tough run of games recently and it hasn't been easy. I didn't expect a lot from United but we were unlucky and I was immensely proud. I was left hurting, and then City rolled around and I was left pissed off at shitty officials.. then Arsenal and it all looked good. We played well in all three games, but were obviously up against it and had quality players against us. This game feels different. We have a real massive chance of a morale boosting win. If we play like we did in the last three games we'll get three points tonight. Reading will be up for it and we have to be too.

Lichaj in for Vlaar (Lowton to centre half) & Ireland in for KEA would be my guess at the team but I've never predicted a Lambert team selection correctly yet.

Hopefully a place for Bent at least on the bench.

I agree with Lichaj for Vlaar but would go Holman for KEA and not Ireland.  Would also like to see Baker for Stevens to add some height to the back line.  Agree with Bent on the bench.

I'd be interested in a 4-1-4-1 formation, with Westwood as the one, behind Cupboardy and Bannan, width from Gabby and Holman and Benteke up top.

We'll win 3 - 1 with it being uncomfortable at 2-1 for about half an hour and an 85th minute goal will kill it

They've sold 689 tickets. Anyone know how much we've sold?

It reminds me of the match were we could not beat Norwich at home in another so called must win game.
Please God let me be wrong!

I hope baker partners Clark but Lowton looked ok on Saturday if needed in central defence.
At least Vlaar has a chance of playing at qpr so it's not too serious.

No we want Martin O'Neills Sunderland stuffed. A few games from now we will not be concerned about what they are doing, we will be more concerned in getting into the top half.

I have always thought an advanced role for Delph would suit his game more, but think Holman-Ireland are ahead of him at this moment and it is a difficult time to be experimenting .......
But you could replace GA with Delph in the left-sided support role for Benteke ...

Ye think that would give us a more balanced attacking option with a natural left footed player .....
