Very much like the look of our team today - nice to Westwood start , I feel very optimistic having seen the line up.

I really like the look of that side, with the exception of Bent not being in it(but he's injured). Good to see how Westwood gets on. I'm guessing it'll play the a 4-3-3 with Benteke as spearhead and Gabby and Weimann either side. I much prefer that to 4-4-2.

Quite pleased with that line up. Seems pretty attacking, need to get a good early start, put pressure on them, and hopefully get their crowd moaning. UTV

Foot injury?  Or he refused to go back to the SoL and sit on the bench?  It could be a geniuine injury but the way things are going with Bent at the moment I would be surprised if he wasn't to be sold in January.

Ooh I like the sound of this! Benteke as the focal point up front, with Weimann and Agbonlahor moving around him. Also, that is a midfield designed to keep the ball, though the lack of KEA is a worry and it's a lot of responsibility on Westwood in his first start, especially without Holman's work ethic there as well.

Well, we'll either win brilliantly or be steamrollered with this. May as well risk it at this stage I suppose.

I know right, it's terrifying. Under MON and Eck we knew they'd never change it around enough to do what we wanted. Lambert has, so if it doesn't work we can't really complain. Which is a scary thought.

An awful lot of chopping and changing again. How is consistency meant to be achieved? Makes you wonder why he picked Albrighton, Delph and Holman last week, when it should have been Weimann, Bannan and Ireland.

After our major complaint for 6 seasons has been the inability to rotate players I'm not suprised to have seen a comment like this, just amazed it's taken this many games.  Clear case of not being able to please all the people all the time.

Nice to see a midfield designed to keep the ball, the right decision against a mon side for me.

You can imagine MON's thoughts as he reads the team sheet.

Lowton; never heard of him
Vlaar; that's a strange name
Bennett; must be one of the kids coming through
Westwood; nope, no idea
Benteke; must be a mis-print surely

I wonder if it's something to do with what he knows about MON. We all remember how we used to (fuck it, still do) struggle against supposedly weaker sides who kept the ball better in the face of our physical, counter-attacking approach. Maybe that's why he's gone with such a ball-playing midfield.

That's my thoughts on it, keep the ball in midfield and have 'wide forwards' to drag their wide midfielders backwards.

Bannan and Westwood? Oh dear

Why? The one thing you can set your watch by is that a MON team will give you the ball and play on the counter. If we have players that can keep the ball then we will have a good chance.

Not sure you can be in a position to judge Westwood yet, and Bannan can't be worse than our midfield last week.

Though he's hardly torn up many trees, we have looked better this season with Bannan rather than Delph in the side, in my view.
Title: Re: Sunderland v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: hilts_coolerking on November 03, 2012, 02:53:35 PM
I'm apprehensive.  I'm not sure what basis there is for believing we're miraculously going to stop giving the ball away and with very few in that line-up looking capable of getting it back it could be a long afternoon.

On the other hand, if we deal with their set pieces and crosses well enough Sunderland could play all year and not score.  So who knows maybe we'll nick it 1-0 with a Weimann screamer from 0.5 yards.

I just hope football is the winner.*

* which of course means not the mealy-mouthed self-interested tracksuit-tucking in tosser.

We've looked the better team so far Stu, Sunderland looking dangerous on the break. Bennets gone off inured to be replaced by Lichaj after 10mins

Cheers. I suppose that is to be expected of this Sunderland team. They don't create much though, so lets hope we can get a goal soon.

2 teams low on confidence playing out a dour draw so far.  Benteke is the pick form our lot along with Westwood both of whom are having decent games.  We really do need to pick up a draw at least today.
Title: Re: Sunderland v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: citizenDJ on November 03, 2012, 03:52:22 PM
Well, that's better than we've been for a little while, and in 45 minutes Westwood and Bannan have shown that they should be strong favourites to be in the starting midfield each week. Benteke has been very good again, a real handful up front and winning most headers for us to follow up.

I think I am just about done with Ireland. I've been patient and acknowledged the obvious ability he has, or at least had, but he just isn;t delivering anything for us. His passing is wayward, his tackling is dogy and his workrate is hit-and-miss. An irritating player.
Title: Re: Sunderland v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: sirlordbaltimore on November 03, 2012, 03:52:53 PM
Hard hlaf to sum up for me.

For the first 20 minutes I thought we looked pretty good, but without looking like scoring. After that they came into it more and had a few half chances they thankfully failed to take. We also started leaving some pretty big gaps in midfield and down the right which a better team would exploit for sure

A bit more composure (especially from Ireland, who's been VERY slack with the ball) and a bit more urgency when we have the ball in their half and maybe we can nick a goal
Title: Re: Sunderland v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: fredm on November 03, 2012, 03:53:08 PM
Lichaj wants to calm down. He is getting too close to them and giving away unnecessary free kicks and now has got booked.  They will play on him next half and try and get him a second yellow.
I cannot make my mind up about Ireland, he just seems a few inches away from making the interception and his passes frequently just fail to reach their target.  If I had a suspicious mind I might wonder if it is intentional?
Title: Re: Sunderland v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: Jimbo on November 03, 2012, 03:54:09 PM
A familiar pattern is emerging in this match. We know we very, very rarely keep a clean sheet, but we don't really look like scoring. Of the two sides, Martin O'Neill's Sunderland look more likely to score, and I'm afraid that's what I think will happen.

Irelands been a bit casual in his passing, although he's made up for that with some sold tackling. Otherwise the midfields looked a lot better, not sure if we need someone to have the responsibility to get forward though. If it's Ireland he needs to push a bit further on, we've not really given their keeper anything to do.

When they come at us I think they will score every time, but overall I feel this is ours if we go for it.

Ireland's got all the ability but no brains, very little bottle and no urgency.  It's so frustrating watching him play.

Agreed. The only tackles he's attempted have been ones where he's gone flying in pretty recklessly. Definitely the weak link in the midfield on that evidence.

Playing ok and livley going forward but without looking too dangerous.  Westwood looks better than he did at Southampton. I like Lichaj as a player but he really is as bad as if not worse than Warnock for giving away needless free kicks in dangerous positions.  Two for pointless nudges in the back when the player was going nowhere.

On the plus side, I think Lowton is fantastic. The Sheffield fans who said he couldn't step up are proven wrong. He looks every bit the Premiership full back.

Yep, I like Lowton.  Looks determined, composed and skilful.  And he'll only get better.  Westwood has been impressive too.  I must say it's refreshing to watch a team basically made up of youngsters and newcomers, shorn of the likes of Dunne, Collins, Heskey et al.  Shame about Ireland though.

I'm not omitting that at all. As I and others have said, his ability to do such things is undoubted. It's his ability to do them often or effectively that's in question. To take an easy shot, compare him with Hoolihan's performance against us last weekend.

It's not that so much as the fact that someone with such ability has so little influence on games.

It is misleading. He gets dispossessed a lot more than he gives it away, usually in threatening positions that have you shaking your head.

That's the first thing Bannan's done wrong all afternoon. Surely, surely, that's him starting ahead of Delph from now on?

You'd hope so.  A very good footballer versus someone who to me looks like George Weah's other "cousin".

Bannan is actually better in every regard - tracking back, passing, positioning, you name it and wee Barry is better at it than Delph.

I missed this Ireland chance that everyone is talking about. Was it really that easy?

Terrible back pass, their keeper picked it up at pace about 2 yards wide of his goal.  Under pressure from Gabby flicked it up then sort of bicycle kicked it away (TM HDE) straight to Ireland just outside the middle of the box. Ireland volleyed it first time wide, gabby tried to flick it in but was obviously offside.
