Oo-er. Nice and ballsy but a bit mad and light in midfield numbers. Might be a bit overrun today.

Would have preferred Baker at centre half - Clark is a disaster there.

Would have preferred Baker to Clark at centre back. Apart from that I agree on dropping Given and N'Zogbia. Should be interesting.

Wouldn't have guessed Bannan or Clarke, so wouldn't have won the subscription.

NEWCASTLE: Krul, Simpson, S Taylor, Coloccini, Santon, Ben Arfa, Anita, Cabaye, Gutierrez, Ba, Cisse. Subs: Williamson, Gosling, Amalfitano, Birgimania, Marveaux, Obertan, Harper.

Pretty surprised to see no Delph or Herd anywhere near the team!

Presumably either Bannan and KEA in the middle, or perhaps a diamond with Holman at the tip?

Either way it looks weak to me. Fingers crossed.

I went to Forest and it was noticable that Guzan was under instruction to play the ball short to Bannan and the defenders, that seemed to go completely out of the window against WHU and Everton so maybe Given wasn't following orders and that's why he's out?

If Herd and Delph are injured, I'd have preferred to have Clark in midfield, with Baker in central defence.

Not a bad fifteen minutes or so, then. Lichaj is looking a little shaky, but hopefully he'll grow into the game a bit. Guzan seems to have a more commanding presence in the box to me. I don't know if he is much bigger than Given but he seems it.

Also, El Ahmadi's movement when we're in posession of the ball is a cut above anyone I've seen for Villa for ages. He is always shifting into position to receive the ball.

I don't see how anyone can say its been all newcastle. That's bollocks. I'm still nervous and unsure about out defence. But the tactics are working well. Lots of group pressure on the ball. Some good passing though we still lack quality a bit in the last third.

Guzan's looking commanding. Given's always been a quiet keeper too, and I'm liking the fact that Guzan is getting amongst his defenders, and getting them organised. They always know where he is. It looks like Guzan really wants to keep his spot now. He's finally got a manager who'll actually pick him on merit.

Loving the workrate from all involved too. Particularly Ireland and Bannan who haven't always worked hard enough in defence. They're both putting in a good shift.

this. It amazed me when he publicly ruled himself out of the vacant England managers position. Like he was ever considered.

I think PL has told them to play with fire up their ass, could do with a bit more patience in the final third. Somewhere between this performance and the West Ham one could do it.

I still can't say with any certainty what exactly Holman's position is, but I do think he works very hard for the team, he pops up all over the pitch and chases back very well. He also does seem to have a decent eye for a pass from time to time. Those are qualities that may well keep him in and abuot the first team, I reckon.

Half time, and a pretty impressive showing from Villa. I mentioned it at the atsrt of the match, but Bent definitely seems to me to be to putting effort into helping the team out more than usual. Responding to Lambert's instructin or the increased competition for a place I don't know, but it HAS made a difference to our attacking play.

But not as much as N'Zogbia not being on the pitch at all.

I like Holman, he's been really good in our pressing game, which has been a feature of the half. Newcastle haven't been able to find their rhythm. On the ball he's been a bit gash, but hey ho.

Impressed with the team effort out there. That's why Bannan's in the team - he can be frustrating but he can also play brilliant passes and crosses and Clark took full advantage of their horrible marking.

Bent's been winning a lot of flick-ons, though good to see our only long balls have been goal kicks. He looks uncomfortable on the ball when he's not in the box, but he and Weimann have been working hard and giving options, which is a great improvement.

In conclusion: keep it up, please for god's sake keep it up!

Half time key points for me:

- still really nervous and on another day Newcastle would have scored
- but compared to my expectations, a damn sight better
- tactics working well, particularly the hassling
- still a bit sloppy on the ball at times, and you feel that one of these free kicks is going to hurt us at some point
- Best players for me: Clark, Guzan, Bannan, Lowton and Bent doing a  better target man impression than normal
- Holman working hard but not the best on the ball. El Ahmadi needs to adjust to the pace of English football

- I reckon Gabby or CNZ might be a threat as a sub. But I've thought that previously.
- Would love to have a Delph on the bench to come on and add some steel.

Compared to the first two games this is a lot better. By and large, a decent all round performance but need another goal, as one is never enough and Pardew will no doubt have them fired up for the second half, but PL needs to do the same, no resting on what they've got.

Given the new players becoming available, I hope they all realise they need to perform to keep their shirts.

Come on Villa, lets stick it up Pardew.

Good so far. We're away from home against a very good side. I think we're doing very well. I think Holman's been okay. He's not had much time on the ball when he's been in the attacking third, but he's worked hard, got in some good positions. He looks fitter than he did at West Ham. He was struggling with injury then. He's certainly been a damn sight more effective than CNZ would be. I mean Holman isn't technically brilliant, but he can play. His work-rate is really useful. Reminds me of Kuyt at Liverpool. Underrated for what he did, but was always in the team for a reason.
Ireland's working hard. Bent's not been given much time and space. A few times he's had it and you just wish he was a better footballer, but he's not as comfortable on the ball some players. Still, he looks likely to score today with more service.
Weimann is struggling to get into the game. I'd like to see Gabby. I doubt he's actually close to being ready though. If we grab a 2nd goal, I'd love to see Bowery get 10-15 minutes.

I do feel that we may end up losing today but I think most of us thought we would.
What is encouraging apart from being 1-0 up is that we appear to be improving and learning at a faster rate than was expected.

The majority of these are young players and the system and style is new, I still think at times we're overplaying. Almost as though they want to make no long balls whatsoever, Newcastle have looked dangerous getting the ball into the box as did West Ham. Perhaps occasionally mixing it up is wise but credit the team for sticking to the gameplan and keeping it short.

I think if we give this team 10 games to bed in and not be too near the bottom come the back end of the season we may start to see some great stuff, and we'll all be in a warm, happy place :)

Strange movement from Bent then. Should have carried on into the box. Promising start to the second half though.

I was praising Bent esrlier for his increased willingness in this game to drop deeper and help out, but he got it all wrong there! He should have got himself in the box. I suppose he's adapting his new instructions like the rest of them.

Firstly, Lee Probert is a shocking ref, not every foul is a yellow card you prick! Secondly, theres a Villa team that for a long time has a game plan about what to do. Think Benteke will give us a nice addition of power and height and Brad in goals looks like my first choice for me.

Well done Villa, well done Lambert....this could be fun.

I think that was as good an away performance as we produced in the top 6 MON days. We were combative, dangerous and though we did hang on a bit, we did it pretty well.

That wasn't the performance of a bottom-3 team

Not sure what's going on with us at the minute; so disjointed and not our normal selves. Cabaye in particular looks a shadow of last season. Switching back to 4-4-2 doesn't seem to be working, we should stick with 4-3-3.

Good point at the end of a day we could well have come away with nothing, saved by the wonder that is Hatem Ben Arfa.
