Setting  off for VP now. A must win match that I have no doubt we will win. PL  should  select the strongest team available.

VILLA: Guzan, Lichaj, Lowton, Baker, Stevens, Bannan, Ireland, Herd, Delph, Weimann, Bent [c]. Subs: Given, N’Zogbia, Holman, Delfouneso, Johnson, Burke, Williams.

That team should be enough to get the job done.  I'd have stuck Ron in though to work on his partnership with Baker.  Who's in central defence, Lichaj?

Lowton can play there so I imagine he's partnering Baker.

4-3-3? And not a 4-5-1 that we normally play when people talk about 4-3-3.

I think he is desperately trying to find the NZogbia that we saw at Wigan.

Lowton and Baker centre back, Lichaz right and Stevens left back.

Interesting to see how the midfield line up.

Villa make six changes from the side that played against Everton.
Brad Guzan comes in for Shay Given, Eric Lichaj for Ciaran Clark, Enda Stevens for Ron Vlaar, Stephen Ireland for Charles N’Zogbia, Fabian Delph for Karim El Ahmadi and Andreas Weimann for Nathan Delfouneso.

VILLA: Guzan, Lichaj, Lowton, Baker, Stevens, Bannan, Ireland, Herd, Delph, Weimann, Bent [c]. Subs: Given, N’Zogbia, Holman, Delfouneso, Johnson, Burke, Williams.

TRANMERE: Fon Williams, Holmes, Taylor, Palmer, Thompson, Wallace, Cassidy, Robinson, Bagayoko, Gibson, Akpa Akpro. Subs: Harrison, Kirby, Stockton, Power, Kay, Bell-Baggie, Mooney.

You're probably right, John e.  But he might have a good game against a lower league side which could tempt another  club to gamble?  Hope he has a great game tonight anyway, but I'm not holding my breath or anything silly!

I think the idea is that the midfield four will be a tight diamond, with Lichaj and Stevens overlapping and creating the width.

Indeed.  Looks more of a 4-2-2-2 with the full backs bombing forward, Bannan and Ireland adding the creativity for the front two (or at least that being the plan).

Villa 0-0 Tranmere – 15mins: Good start from Paul Lambert’s men who are dominating possession and looking for ways to break down Rovers. Barry Bannan, Fabian Delph and Stephen Ireland being particularly influential. Best chance falls to Bannan whose shot from 25 yards flies just wide.

Villa 0-0 Tranmere – 30mins: More good play from Villa. In the ascendancy but can’t find that killer ball through. Paul Lambert’s men did have the ball in the net from a corner routine but Nathan Baker was adjudged to have fouled in the box in the lead-up. Barry Bannan also sent a lovely 20-yard left-foot curling effort just over the bar.

Well 2-1 to Cov now

Hmmm, which one to lose the most............

I don't know anybody who actually supports Cov and looking at the ground I don't think many people do. So in a sympathy fuck kind of way I hope they win.

I know a couple of coventry fans, they're worse than blues, not only do they have the football inferiority complex, but a city one as well.

Do they have small members too?

That's the reason I ask for folks not to post made up stuff. While it can be amusing to pass the time for those of us that know it's made up there are folks who pop into the match thread when at work etc to know how we're doing and it can be very confusing for them knowing what's true and what isn't.

mate, I'll put your initial comment about Woodwank simply down to youth, naivety or stupidity. Or a combination of the three. No problem, we all have those moments. You are going to find if you listen long enough, that Woodwank is annoyingly shit in every imagineable way as a "broadcaster", and I apologise to the great broadcasters of yesteryear for categorising him as such. He is utterly, utterly mince.

The BBC have just posted:
A much-needed win for Villa looks very, very likely now. Villa last exited at the second-round stage in 1991, against Grimsby. Doesn't look like that fact is going to change tonight.

That was a poor, poor night when we lost to Grimsby. I didn't half take some stick at school the next day.

They were bigging us up for a shock today. I do not ever remember them predicting that correctly for us.

My first ever AVTV commentary experience tonight...Woodward gets a lot of stick on here, but he is a million times better than the bloke on talksport, who loses his voice every time something exciting happens. Edna sounds like hes having a good game.
Are you drunk?
Wait till the second time you have heard him.
Il take that back, his commentary for the goal was very embarrasing!

mate, I'll put your initial comment about Woodwank simply down to youth, naivety or stupidity.
Utterly Mince,Can I steal that?

Well as he is still broadcaster for us 6 years on and has never been poached away by local news or Sky, is there any surprise about his abilities.

probably not the best game to judge but how is guzan doing? If he does well does anybody think he will keep his place? He's been told he will get a chance to fight for a spot, if he keeps a clean sheet will lambert be able to justify dropping him?

I think Guzan has every chance of keeping his spot.

Tonight is what we needed. Just to prove to ourselves that we can actually pass and create and convert chances. Let's not kid ourselves, there's a million miles to go, and we absolutely need 2-3 players this week to bolster our squad. But this is good, we need our injured soldiers back, and allow Lambert to build off of this.

Well, when dropped he usually decides to put in a transfer request. So we will have to wait until Jan now to get shot of Shay.

Yes, I've been chiming in all week about the pricing being too high and predicting a 15K crowd but have been getting short shrift fom Mr Woodhall.  He claims that the pricing strategy was all down to Tranmere.  Sorry but surely the negotiators at Villa need to be a little bit stronger.

Not a bad price then. I suppose while most of the West Midlands are in Devon (it seems like that here!) and we have a piss poor start it's going to be low. That is very low though.

What rot the club needs to be firmer when negotiating.  If we follow your argument are you saying that if Tranmere wanted £50 tickets they could have forced this also.  Just out of interest where were the away fans situated tonight and how many of their fans had to pay £20??
Title: Re: Aston Villa v Tranmere Rovers Match Thread

It's not my argument, it's the way it works in cup matches. You can argue all you want, it's not going to change the fact that the away team has a say in pricing.
