Available Tuesday evening.
-
Setting off for VP now. A must win match that I have no doubt we will win. PL should select the strongest team available.
-
We're not at home to Mr Cock Up.
-
Interesting team.
-
VILLA: Guzan, Lichaj, Lowton, Baker, Stevens, Bannan, Ireland, Herd, Delph, Weimann, Bent [c]. Subs: Given, N’Zogbia, Holman, Delfouneso, Johnson, Burke, Williams.
-
That team should be enough to get the job done. I'd have stuck Ron in though to work on his partnership with Baker. Who's in central defence, Lichaj?
-
is that collectively the youngest back 4 to ever start a senior game for us?

Lowton can play there so I imagine he's partnering Baker.
-
he must love N'Zog, is he the only player to have started every game ?

Shop window?
-
4-3-3? And not a 4-5-1 that we normally play when people talk about 4-3-3.
-
I think he is desperately trying to find the NZogbia that we saw at Wigan.
Lowton and Baker centre back, Lichaz right and Stevens left back.
Interesting to see how the midfield line up.
-

people actually watching him play probably isnt the best way of selling him
-
Villa make six changes from the side that played against Everton.
Brad Guzan comes in for Shay Given, Eric Lichaj for Ciaran Clark, Enda Stevens for Ron Vlaar, Stephen Ireland for Charles N’Zogbia, Fabian Delph for Karim El Ahmadi and Andreas Weimann for Nathan Delfouneso.
VILLA: Guzan, Lichaj, Lowton, Baker, Stevens, Bannan, Ireland, Herd, Delph, Weimann, Bent [c]. Subs: Given, N’Zogbia, Holman, Delfouneso, Johnson, Burke, Williams.
TRANMERE: Fon Williams, Holmes, Taylor, Palmer, Thompson, Wallace, Cassidy, Robinson, Bagayoko, Gibson, Akpa Akpro. Subs: Harrison, Kirby, Stockton, Power, Kay, Bell-Baggie, Mooney.
-
VILLA: Guzan, Lichaj, Lowton, Baker, Stevens, Bannan, Ireland, Herd, Delph, Weimann, Bent [c]. Subs: Given, N’Zogbia, Holman, Delfouneso, Johnson, Burke, Williams.
No width at all in that side. I fear a long night.
-
You're probably right, John e. But he might have a good game against a lower league side which could tempt another club to gamble? Hope he has a great game tonight anyway, but I'm not holding my breath or anything silly!

I think the idea is that the midfield four will be a tight diamond, with Lichaj and Stevens overlapping and creating the width.
-
Playing for them, Bell-Baggie. That must be a made up name.
-
Errr, N'zogbia's on the bench isn't he...?
-

N'Zogbia might not play at all considering he's on the bench.

Indeed. Looks more of a 4-2-2-2 with the full backs bombing forward, Bannan and Ireland adding the creativity for the front two (or at least that being the plan).

There was no need to cup tie him.

Teams just been announced here. First thought was mostly reserves but it's close to team that played on Saturday. Just shows our problem.

The season starts tonight

Cov playing Blues tonight, I'm sure that's going to end well.
-
Please win well Villa.
Well, please win Villa.
-
small heath ahead at cov.
-
Have Villa pissed off the local radio stations? Again its Blues or Baggies on all 4 stations?
-

They can all sing 'shit on da Villa' together, bless.

Annoying that you can't get them over the internet too. Looks like its updates only tonight.

They'll be singing "we hate Villa more than you" at each other as usual.

We'll win well tonight, stop panicking ;)

Yeah, but enough about the Shit. How are we doing? this is like one of those Us friendlies with the odd random update.
-
does anyone know if there is a highlights programme showing the games/goals on later? gutted, illness stopped me going and I cant find the game anywhere....

They'll struggle to lose 1-0 as they are already winning.

The text description on the BBC isn't very, er, discriptive.
-

There's a League Cup highlights show on at 11:30 or so.

SSN will probably cover some of them, but I believe the Beeb aren't doing anything until Thursday.
-
Know wer cant post links, but is anybody actually watching this on line anywhere? Is it worth looking?
With lack of moans I'm guessing not. With so many matches it is hard to get a stream this early in the competition.

Erm, yes, I know.

if nobody can see the game anywhere, maybe we should just make it up as we go along
bit like the summer transfer thread

I tried looking without success. Debating AVTV but .....

Even the BBC updates is shite. Took 10 minutes to mention Blues have took the lead and falsely had Southampton 1-0 up for 5 mins.

doug taught him how to do it

Yes! Get in. Lost my bet, but sweet volley by Brad!
-
Villa 0-0 Tranmere – 15mins: Good start from Paul Lambert’s men who are dominating possession and looking for ways to break down Rovers. Barry Bannan, Fabian Delph and Stephen Ireland being particularly influential. Best chance falls to Bannan whose shot from 25 yards flies just wide.
-
SSN haven't mentioned us at all yet.

BBC is always shite for updates.
-
SSN haven't mentioned us at all yet.
They did in a sneeze and miss it kind of way. Just said we had all the possession through Bannan and Ireland about 15 mins ago.
-
Ireland's just been sent off.
-
Cov level with Blues
-
Cov 1-1.
-
Bet365 says goal for Villa
-
A reasonable goal from Baker disallowed for climbing over someone's shoulder.
Playing ok Ireland interested however we are a bit imprecise. Bannan spoiling it by playing too many high passes.
-

Yes, but even worse then normal. I think like SSN, they have the B team out and it is shite-r.
Cov equalised anyway.
-
We've had one disallowed for pushing. Rightly so apparently. And no one has been sent off.
-
Ireland's just been sent off.
The ref had no choice Idiot

now that is making it up

Well 2-1 to Cov now

No posting made up goals, sending offs etc, thank you.

Fancy going in two footed when the ref didn't even have the ball?!
-
Cov winning!
-
Well 2-1 to Cov now
Hmmm, which one to lose the most............
-
10:48 The assistant referee signals for offside against Zoumana Bakayogo. Bradley Guzan takes the free kick.
Some Scrabble points in there, by god.
-
No posting made up goals, sending offs etc, thank you.
It really is 2-1 to Cov.
-
substitutions ok?
-
Tran have had more corners than us but we don't need corners to score
-
Well 2-1 to Cov now
Hmmm, which one to lose the most............
I don't know anybody who actually supports Cov and looking at the ground I don't think many people do. So in a sympathy fuck kind of way I hope they win.
-
Well it looks like Justin Moorhouse will be a Boro supporter by the end of the night.
-
According to the BBC nothing has happened in our game since 17:49

I know a couple of coventry fans, they're worse than blues, not only do they have the football inferiority complex, but a city one as well.
-
Bannan hits crossbar!!
-
The better Ex Villa James Collins scores against Stoke.
-
Yeovil 1-0 Albion *snigger*
-
SSN going round the grounds, some pretty poor looking attendances.
-
Cmon PWS......one rule for the rest of us?
-
Cmon PWS......one rule for the rest of us?
Nope, actual goals etc are fine. Made up ones aren't.
-
bbc is hopeless for updates
-
Don't believe you ..Yeovil 1 Baggies 0 ?
-
Villa 0-0 Tranmere – 30mins: More good play from Villa. In the ascendancy but can’t find that killer ball through. Paul Lambert’s men did have the ball in the net from a corner routine but Nathan Baker was adjudged to have fouled in the box in the lead-up. Barry Bannan also sent a lovely 20-yard left-foot curling effort just over the bar.

SSN report, sounds like Bannan is having a good game.

Barry Bannan dominating the game according to SSN.
-
offside - goal disallowed
-
Why did God bother with Jack Woodwood?
Another goal not given for offside.

Sky have just praised Bannan to the eyeballs and he will win us the match unless Tranmere close him down. So stupid sending off or blind back pass for and own goal?
-
According to SSN Bannan is dominating this game single handed. GO ON BARRY.
-
Delph 1-0 Come on!
-
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL
-
goal delph 1-0

-
Good move resulting in a clearly offside Ireland chipping
Ahhh a goal any way crossed the line before goalie pulled it out Delf.

good stuff. Let's batter this lot FFS

Bannan found his level.

Excellent. I do miss that in London.
-
GOAL: Villa 1-0 Tranmere - Fabian Delph. Delph scrambles the ball in at the far post after lovely chipped ball into the box by Enda Stevens.
-
sounds like reserve team bannan is playing instead of first team bannan. The quality is definitely there, just needs to get the application.
and then Delph scores from a Stevens cross... get in

No it was def Ireland. Enda has thick dark head of hair
-
Excellent stuff. I'd completely forgotten about Enda Stevens.
-
Sounds like target practice, or am I just getting overexcited that we're beating Tranmere?
Come on Yeovil and Swindon anyway, give me something to laugh about.
-
Half time
-
Excellent stuff. I'd completely forgotten about Enda Stevens.
he's actually a tidy player. Maybe, in a few years we can look back and thank TSM for something. Mind you, we'll have just finished paying off Given and N'Zogbia's contracts so maybe not.

Reading and Peterborough are having a fair old game. 5 goals in the first half.

No changes at HT

Early onslaught fron Trannies- not. Bannan actually is quite effective tonight.

If Doug was still in charge I could see him buying Nathaniel Knight-Percival from Peterboro. That would make a fortune in shirt names.

My bad, thought it had been decided on here that we were making our own stuff up due to the media blackout...got told off and stopped.
-
That's the reason I ask for folks not to post made up stuff. While it can be amusing to pass the time for those of us that know it's made up there are folks who pop into the match thread when at work etc to know how we're doing and it can be very confusing for them knowing what's true and what isn't.
-
Goal for Luke Moore at Swansea.
-
Luke Moore scores for Swansea.
-
So I'm not having sex with Angelina Jolie?
-
This appears too easy so with the score still 1-0 I am getting nervous

I'm not complaining PWS, not fussed either way and I understand..so long as I know the rules I'll stick to them.
-
So I'm not having sex with Angelina Jolie?
No I am, with Mila Kunis on deck.
-
My first ever AVTV commentary experience tonight...Woodward gets a lot of stick on here, but he is a million times better than the bloke on talksport, who loses his voice every time something exciting happens. Edna sounds like hes having a good game.
-
Need Bent to score tonight.
-
Yeovil 2 - Albion
-
So I'm not having sex with Angelina Jolie?
Why not?!
-
Baggies 2-2
-
Luke Moore goal for Swansea...
-
we really do need a forward that is very different to what we have just to add some variety to our play. We seem to be doing a lot of the same thing in attempting to create chances
-
So I'm not having sex with Angelina Jolie?
No I am, with Mila Kunis on deck.
Damn you, I phoned Mila and she told me she was washing her hair....
-
Who's actually playing up front?
-
Need Bent to score tonight.
Weimann denies him a tap in but really Bent is rubbish player.
-
Goal for Kenwyne Jones, anybody think he could do a job for us?
-
close by Weimann - sounds like a 2nd goal soon
-
2-0
-
Who's actually playing up front?
Weimann is playing and Bent is stood around pointing at everyone in all directions. Obviously being a captain
-

2-0 herd!!

Chris Herd with the goal.

4-0 please.

Chris Herd! Game over :)

4-0 please.

Holman on for Stevens

-
Yes 2-0

Holman on for Stevens
Trying out Delph at left back?
Or Herd at centre back and Lowton left back?
-
Goal for Kenwyne Jones, anybody think he could do a job for us?
Only the same job Emile did.
-
Delph is LB.
-
Leicester 1 - 4 Burton
-
N'ZOG on for Weimann
-
That 2nd goal has eased the nerves
-
Delf at LB. Nzog on for Andi so now cup tied!
-
Come on Villa a few goals please.
-
The BBC have just posted:
A much-needed win for Villa looks very, very likely now. Villa last exited at the second-round stage in 1991, against Grimsby. Doesn't look like that fact is going to change tonight.
That was a poor, poor night when we lost to Grimsby. I didn't half take some stick at school the next day.

mate, I'll put your initial comment about Woodwank simply down to youth, naivety or stupidity. Or a combination of the three. No problem, we all have those moments. You are going to find if you listen long enough, that Woodwank is annoyingly shit in every imagineable way as a "broadcaster", and I apologise to the great broadcasters of yesteryear for categorising him as such. He is utterly, utterly mince.

Utterly Mince,Can I steal that?
feel free my brother
-
My first ever AVTV commentary experience tonight...Woodward gets a lot of stick on here, but he is a million times better than the bloke on talksport, who loses his voice every time something exciting happens. Edna sounds like hes having a good game.
Are you drunk?
Wait till the second time you have heard him.
Il take that back, his commentary for the goal was very embarrasing!
mate, I'll put your initial comment about Woodwank simply down to youth, naivety or stupidity. Or a combination of the three. No problem, we all have those moments. You are going to find if you listen long enough, that Woodwank is annoyingly shit in every imagineable way as a "broadcaster", and I apologise to the great broadcasters of yesteryear for categorising him as such. Well as he is still broadcaster for us 6 years on and has never been poached away by local news or Sky, is there any surprise about his abilities.

Could do with Bent finding the back of the net, to boost his confidence.

Delph booked

Burke on for Herd. Delph gets booked.
-
Delf is a liability at LB please god or Paul never play him there in aPL game.

We lost on away goals didn't we?
Yep, 0-0 at theirs, 1-1 at ours.
-
3-0 bent

I love Jack Woodward.
I love you, Jackie, I do, I love you Jackie, I do, I love you, Jackie, I do. Oh, Jackie, I LOVE you!!

Ireland seems to be having a very good game, especially on second half.

3 nil, Bent

''The icing on the Capital One cup cake'' J.Woodwood .

It's worrying that our forwards aren't scoring, especially Bent

Did sir order the Bent morale booster?

Great now we can relax

I hope they carry this form into Saturdays game.
-
Ah great glad Benty scored.

''The icing on the Capital One cup cake'' J.Woodwood .
Weirdly the Sky reporter used the Icing on the Cake comment as well (Not the capital one bit). Did he decide to poach Woodwank's line?

I retract my previous post, and I'm pleased to do so

Your Mad!
-
probably not the best game to judge but how is guzan doing? If he does well does anybody think he will keep his place? He's been told he will get a chance to fight for a spot, if he keeps a clean sheet will lambert be able to justify dropping him?
-
Ive never heard the phrase "icing on the capital one cup cake" before.. Courtesey of J. Woodward
Brillant!.

He could certainly justify dropping Given on Saturday.
-
What's the crowd?
-
Moore L scores again
-
I think Guzan has every chance of keeping his spot.
Tonight is what we needed. Just to prove to ourselves that we can actually pass and create and convert chances. Let's not kid ourselves, there's a million miles to go, and we absolutely need 2-3 players this week to bolster our squad. But this is good, we need our injured soldiers back, and allow Lambert to build off of this.

So people say.
They're probably correct.

Well, when dropped he usually decides to put in a transfer request. So we will have to wait until Jan now to get shot of Shay.

Holman has to start for me

Boggies stolen it 3-2.

I agree. I thought he was well off the pace and his shooting was poor.

yikes, really? That's horrendous

Blimey. When did we last get a crowd that low?
-
Full time. That'll do me.

Blimey that is low. How much did it cost for a ticket?

Ach a win's a win. Well done lads.

£12-£20 I think.
-
Bye Eck it's Eckybloke!
-
Paul McKenna has just been sent off for Doncaster. You'd have thought he could have hypnotised the ref.
-
Banana skin avoided and doesn't sound like we had to work too hard. Onward and upwards!
-
I'd let Given keep his place on Sunday. His confidence would be even more shot otherwise. We will need a Given back on form this season. If he's not performing by the end of Septembre, then drop him.

Yes, I've been chiming in all week about the pricing being too high and predicting a 15K crowd but have been getting short shrift fom Mr Woodhall. He claims that the pricing strategy was all down to Tranmere. Sorry but surely the negotiators at Villa need to be a little bit stronger.

Not a bad price then. I suppose while most of the West Midlands are in Devon (it seems like that here!) and we have a piss poor start it's going to be low. That is very low though.
-
And every time you mention it someone points out that the away side has to agree to prices. If Villa wanted lower prices and Tranmere didn't then there is nothing Villa can do about it.
-
Happy days ;D
-
doncaster through with a last minute winner after being 2 down 10 mhutes in. Saunders might do well there, wouldn't mind them away next for obvious reasons': who does everone else want?
-
We only had 18K for Blackburn in the 3rd round in 2010. It happens, especially in the league cup these days.
-

What rot the club needs to be firmer when negotiating. If we follow your argument are you saying that if Tranmere wanted £50 tickets they could have forced this also. Just out of interest where were the away fans situated tonight and how many of their fans had to pay £20??
-
It's not my argument, it's the way it works in cup matches. You can argue all you want, it's not going to change the fact that the away team has a say in pricing.
-
I happen to think they could have charged £5 a ticket and we'd have still had a poor attendance tonight.

Mr Woodall is right Tranmere have to agree and you have to bear in mind a lot of people are away as its the last week of the childrens holiday

I remember that. The crowd was probably bolstered by the fact it was Houllier's first game as well, so it probably could have easily been a lot lower than that.
