Clark midfield replacing Herd.

I like that team, that's what I'd have picked.

Think it will be Clark,Gardner and Bannan as a 3, with Ireland playing in front of them. Gabby and Weimann upfront.

Bannan and Gabby wide with a midfield three is what I expect.

Is Cuellar unfit then?

Cuellar and N'Zogbia should be in the starting XI.

I think we'll line-up in a 4-2-3-1 like this:

Given
Hutton Collins Baker Lichaj
Gardner Clark
Bannan Ireland Agbonlahor
Weimann

Listening to some early The Cure, so in a good mood and feeling highly optimistic.

We are going to twat these plastic wankers, Gabby will make their defence his bitches as usual, Rooney will be sent off for being a twat and Young sent off for diving. 4-1 to Villa.

We can all hope for a result but more important is the attitude and performance. I like the team. We all feared long ball to Heskey today so I'm glad he's gone with Andi and Gabby. We have nothing to lose and all to gain. The results below us have gone quite well, so let's go out and just play.

Strange that Cuellar and N'Zogbia are on the bench when we're down to the bone on numbers. At least he wasn't tempted to start Heskey.

Nearly, that's how we should line up but I don't think there's any chance that McLeish will do that.

McLeish will play a flat 4 in midfield with Bannan right and Gardner left, I'd put money on it.  We'll also end up with the pair of them, and one of weimann or gabby, playing so deep that we will be closer to 6-3-1

Yes, I agree. I don't mind losing if we come out of it with some praise for our youngsters who have knocked it about well and given it a go. They can really learn from a match like this and the one ray of sunshine for me in this awful season is that we can go into next year with some of the kids having got themselves a little used to life in the Premier League

Cuellar and Nzogbia should be playing with Hutton and Bannan on the bench.

I'd understand not playing Cuellar if we were safe seeing as he is off in the summer. But we aren't and Hutton is muck.

Some show of faith in his £10m signing.

To have any chance our midfield trio need to at least break even with the guy going on 40 and the even less mobile Carrick. You would have to wonder how fit Clark is. Big chance for Gardner. Kind of game he needs to make an impression in. He better not be on the left.

Both our full backs are on red card watch today. Huge test for Lichaj.

I like how us not playing 442 is apparently negative. Someone should tell Barca that they line up negatively because they don't play 442..

People on here desperately dig for a reason to hate McLeish, nothing out of the ordinary.

Not that I'm his biggest fan, but he's certainly become a 'can do no right' character.

It's going to take some of these kids to have a positive environment at the club to properly come of age and be noticed. Too much other noise in my opinion hasn't helped their development at first team level. They also need senior players around them that are not oly more talented but have the rught attitude to be supporting influences. It's way too much to ask them to do it on their own. This is PL football, and it is ruthless at the top level. While today is great thinking we have all these kids coming through, it is also a sadindictment on where we are as a club at the first team level as much as it is a compliment to our academy system.

4-5-1 is the way forward, with the right people in certain positions.

Warnock added to the wounded then, and Herd.

We are nearly as low on numbers as we were under Houllier playing United, but less quality in the senior players. Could be a long old afternoon.

While I agree with you, he's not helped himself in what he's done this season or by much of what he's said. Even if in his heart he knows we are not good enough right now, his attitude should still be one of "fuck it let's have a go anyway". That tactic would win us games against most teams in this league. Too often you felt he waved the white flag in his pre-match interviews, with his team selection and in his excuses. I'll put it on record that I want the man to succeed and be the best Villa manager of all time, and get the better of his critics. However, it all starts with him, not us.

Our lowest premier league points total is 42, well done McLeech, seems that you're going to set another new record for the club, along with least number of home wins in a season in more than a century!

Matt Kendrick interviewed on R5 spoke very well about his failings and shoved down the 'He came from B-Lose' argument!

Even the R5 commentators are calling us Aston Vanilla, and that detestable little Welsh (I can say that, I'm Welsh!) twat Savage needs sorting out!

That said, this is Man Utd, we go down badly and the knock on effect could be a disaster, we should put our best possible side out, this is precisely the kind of thing that bothers me about McLeish, its that pick the game you can win gamble and raise the white flag for this one, sure Wigan didn't have that way of looking at it.

I don't have an issue with the media to be honest. You get wha you deserve and they are going talk about the popular topics and ridicule those that warrant it. Right now it's painful to hear, but as club we are getting little or no press because frankly we're irrelevant, and nothing more than a sideshow. It's much easier to slam fans for being anti-McLeish for his blues connection than examine the facts. They are given us less than 15 seconds and it's about as deep into the plight of Villa as they want to go.

I completely understand and agree that he's got himself into this situation, and that he has made plenty of mistakes and been a complete arse for many months, though we have by no means helped him. I still think at times we've played good football, or at least tried, and that once he's had time to bring in his own players we could be a good side again.

Recently he seems to have woken up, and is getting a bit more wise with his tactics and substitution, and I feel like if we gave 'Eck a chance he could do well for us.

He's probably picked our best fit side. What else can he do apart from risk players who aren't fit?
Imagine the shit he'd get if he picked Carlos and after 5 minutes he's out for the rest of the season because he does his injury again.

Title: Re: ManUre v Aston Villa Match Thread

That was a bad decision. But then Mark Halsey is the ref, and I have never seen him give a 50/50 decision for the Villa.

Hutton was the real culprit though, totally skinned without even making a challenge.

We should request Halsey does not do our games, I have said this before a few times, he is a total farce of a ref.

You know what you are going to get when you go up there. Like it was at Anfield for a hundred years. Every ref gets conned. Young is doing what he's paid to do, and con the ref if he needs to. It's massively disappointing but should we really be that surprised?

Those saying he left a leg out, he visible withdrew his leg as much as possible to still be standing up at the end, and Ash just made sure his foot hit Clark. Even if it had not, it was planted ready to dive over.

I suspect that this is our last league fixture at Old Trafford for sometime, but we might as well save time and money and just concede this match 3-0 rather than play it.

There's next season to look forward to.

Ok we've got injuries but this will show the world just what has become of us under AM. Makes me wanna fucking cry it really does...

Really? We're not looking great, but after 27 minutes we're 1-0 down, away from home to the team who are top of the league, and they had to blatantly cheat to get their goal.

I'm not sure that this is the great humiliation that you imagine it is.

I've just seen Carrick take players on and look good. It doesn't get more humiliating than that.

FFS Gabby and then Gardner. The way he turned back then and played it back was almost like he could not be bothered at all. Look the other end at Lichaj, Baker, Clark, Weimann battering themselves for the cause, you wonder if the Villa through and through means as much as is made out with Gabby. Far too many games when he looks like he really can't be arsed or is out and out sulking about something (usually out wide)

I don't think we have looked too bad.

Look at the lack of experience in the team. What dud we expect in this fixture given the fact we have been so poor all season?

The games where we are embarrassing are those like Stoke at home with our manager celebrating a draw, not those when we are on a hiding to nothing like this one.

And Collins can do one as well.  So much for Sky saying 'Baker's mistake cost Villa' - once it got to him any touch would likely have been an own goal, Collins had an easy chance to smash it out for a corner and missed it.  Collins mistake = goal conceded, how many times has that been the case?

Sadly no senior players are standing up to be counted today - especially vital that Gabby and Ireland showed the youngsters the way, but they have been less than average.

If there's one thing I'd change about the team is would be the ability to hold possession for more than 3 seconds.  There's no composure *at all* when we have the ball in defence.  We are the embodiment of low confidence and it makes good teams look great when thy play us.  Let's be clear, Man Utd aren't a great team.

I expected us to lose so I've no idea why it's so galling to watch.

Baker to blame, as usual the youngsters not accountable for mistakes on here as it's easier to blame Collins. Baker stepped over the ball without knowing the player was behind him hoping to get a goal kick. Could have easily helped it out for a corner being left footed and with his body position. Poor defending!

I noticed this too from the camera angle more or less behind Young's run. Never a penalty.

Still seething at the shitehook.

Baker to blame, as usual the youngsters not accountable for mistakes on here as it's easier to blame Collins. Baker stepped over the ball without knowing the player was behind him hoping to get a goal kick. Could have easily helped it out for a corner being left footed and with his body position. Poor defending!

Agree, Baker at fault

Baker could've easily sent it into his own goal though. Collins is the problem for me. He didn't clear it and we are trying to keep the ball on the pitch, yet every single time he gets the ball he hoofs it. Collins, Hutton and Heskey has to go with McLeish. Can't believe how utter shit we are. Love our youths, but utter shite football. Heads needs to roll

There are UTD fans wearing half UTD half Villa scarves, please tell me there is another reason for this, than they just enjoy playing us?

Am I missing something?

They seem to be popular for all games these days, and I just don't get it. For a non-league club in a cup tie against a big club, yes. For two PL clubs who play each other all the time??

I genuinely think they're aimed at  the day trippers and tourists.

They are, there were loads of them at Liverpool last week.

In fairness, I recall seeing VILLA VS CHELSEA scarves being sold the other day before the game, and I definitely remember us selling VILLA VS BRIGHTON scarves a few years ago when we played them in the FA Cup.

Seems like a daft thing to do, I can see it if clubs have a genuine affinity. But otherwise it's a bit daft.

Yorke on Sky defending Young for the penalty, these previous Villa players never seem to have any respect for their old club when they go to other clubs, especially ManUre and Liverpool.

Wilkins had it right, Young needs to consider his reputation as a diver after these last two penalties.

In fairness, Dwight spoke with a ton of respect for us pre game.

Invariably those players who leave Villa for the perceived "step up" are not Villa men.  Their opinions on Villa are worth bugger all.

Whether it was a pen or not, you know what you might get going into games like this. We should have won games against the teams at or around our level and done as much as possible against the likes of United. We're going to take the kicking we all figured we would. It certainly didn't help that they lost to Wigan and Man City battered Norwich either.

Gabby has really lost his way. I'm sure McLeish thought that making him captain might kick start him. Instead he's gone backwards. One of those players that will now stagnate without a change of club or a change in manager at his current club.

Think it's the worst Villa side I've seen, ever. Not talking individuals, cause we have a few good players. But as a team. Bloody rubbish

That is the nub of it.

If McLeish is given time and money to build his own side, that'll really won't be much different.

The man is a clueless, largely spineless joker. The sad thing is, the joke is on us.

Thing is I can see him signing decent players, and then promptly dragging them down to his style of play.

No slating - it was a statement of fact that Carruthers had - and continues to -  done more since coming on.

Same way Heskey had a decent header which was saved by De Gea - i don't now think he is our Messiah up front.

Just because they are young players doesn't make them exempt from any criticism - which my post wasn't.

With the team available & who we were playing, the result was a forgone conclusion. Wasn't helped by the 'penalty' decision but as Young was apparently taught how to cheat by us that makes it acceptable? I'm only surprised Halsey (cnut) didn't let Rooney take whilst Given wasn't looking.

We can't be too critical of anyone today, we don't have the players with the quality or experience to cope with the number of injuries we have.

We now have two big games to get the 3 points which should be enough to see us safe. That's ALL that matters for now.

If Eck is to stay he MUST be given the funds to ensure that the squad has the quality & experience to ensure that we are not in the same situation next season.
