I might have changed Gardner for Clark, but overall happy enough with the team other than the back four. However not a lot we can do about that.

Keane's been exceptional. Bent has been shit. Really should have scored. Should have played Keane imn to shoot. and then when his touch was over hit should have followed into the 6 yard box.

still fancy him to score though

Ireland seems to.  Ireland is starting to look a very useful player.  He is usually the guy that gets ahead of the midfield but yet today he's already nipped in a stole a few balls and was the first one back defending there.  I remember reading when we signed him that he thought his biggest asset was his fitness and he's starting to show that now.

Cuellar left him for that goal..

TBH, it was one of those, Dunne had him originally from the throw in and then the ball deflected to him.

At least Warnock seems to be on a personal mission to take out as many bar codes as he can.

Robbie Keane is just.. on another level isn't he? I never would have said it before, I rated him but didn't know the extent of his talent. He's just a great footballer. He leads the team, tells players what to do, where to play it. I really, really, don't want him to go.

The thrust of my comments here would have been the same if we'd been losing. I think we're playing much better than we had been up to half time last week at Arsenal when we were two up.

Lots of problems still. Clark's form has dropped a lot. Cuellar is over rated by many on here. We still look vulnerable at the back generally.

But we've put together some really good moves, exploiting the weaknesses in Newcastle's championship standard midfield. Keane has been absolutely sensational. Bent's movement has been very good but his touch and finishing weak. Ireland and CNZ have been intermittently threatening.

Keane is DEMANDING that people do the things we haven't done properly for ages: move off the ball; want the ball; have the confidence to play it.

I really fancy us to get another here, but we could easily concede a couple too. Interesting second half

I suppose better to have him for a limited amount of time than not at all. And I've a sneaking feeling that Ireland might be able to step up and replace him in that role. Might be wrong, but we'll see soon enough i suppose.

Petrov has been forward-thinking all season, since Herd and then Clark took over the defensive duties.
As ever, Petrov is massively under-rated by many. He's played well throughout the first half.

That's because he's got somebody showing for the ball in front of him. Nobody else in the team does that, when Keane goes you can't imagine Heskey showing for the ball in the hole.

Fucking madness to take him off if he isn't.

Even if he wasn't, isn't that the purpose of a squad? The ability to change things if you think someone else like Bannan, Albrighton etc can offer something else.
Has taking him off improved things?

Well if what Richard has reported is true, he should have been taken off as no manager can let a player get away with that in public.

Great strike but more woeful defending.

We've generally done okay today (ignoring the defence) and McLeish should take some credit for that but bringing Heskey on for NZogbia is illogical and exposes him to the Boo-boys.  Every time he takes a step forward in my estimations he goes and messes it up.

Why is he so determined to make an already hard job virtually impossible?

Why is it Villa always gives the other players a career boost.

Villa are fantastic at writing fairy tales for other teams. If you have a new striker, play Villa; if you have a striker who has been going through a rough patch, play Villa; if you've just been promoted, play Villa.

Don't forget if you haven't won away all season come on down to VP and we'll sort you out.

Or generally, if a team needs a boost after going through a rough patch. They beat us, but then get soundly defeated again in their next game.

Do we get a payment for helping teams out like this?

I still don't get the Heskey sub. What was the point? Really, what was the thinking behind it? AM finally gets his team to play some good football and then he does that. Why?
Because he is out of his depth and does not really know what he is doing?

Heskey is about as mobile as my ironing board. we are breaking forward and he is standing on the left wing looking on...

true... can't defend... can't attack... can't score... can't do box to box... can't even make a nuisance of himself anymore.... a baffling substitution that makes AM look like a buffoon.

McLeish is an enigma. Whenever I begin to think he's a good manager he ruins it by doing something stupid. But I know he's not a bad manager either, it's so frustrating. He doesn't realise what a big club he's had. Playing for a draw is not good enough at our level.

Great chance.

Oh, what a shock. We pass the ball and we create a chance.

Fucking do it more often!!!!!!!

For someone as technically adept as Bannan is, he's just not careful enough with his passing.

Can't see us getting back into this. No Albrighton or Gabby from the start, and we voluntarily took off Ireland and CNZ!!!

Keane played a lovely ball into Bent then and his touch was embarassing!!

Oh Gardner, what a chance!!!

The subs screwed us today. Totally.

He did well against QPR and Wolves with his decisions, but the manager has lost us this game.

We were getting torn a new one until Heskey came on. At least we're at the races now.

He's inconsistent and the team are a reflection of that. He did say he wanted to build a side in his image though, so there you are: its on the pitch now.

Is this the worst defence we have ever had?

Surely Dunne is the worst and most pathetic CB that I have ever seen. Same for Warnock and Hutton as full backs.

Title: Re: Newcastle United v Aston Villa Match Thread

I have always said every villa side I have followed were mean at the back. We'd struggle for goals some seasons, but usually our strength was our defence. This lot, assembled since Laursen's retirement, are a disgrace. Individually, players liek Dunne can be quite good. But as a defensive unit they are disgrace and a liability.

Why change N'zogbia for Heskey, clueless, and what's the point of bringing Gardner on with only 7 minutes left, should have given him at least half an hour.
