VILLA team v Swansea: Given, Hutton, Collins, Dunne, Warnock, Herd, Delph, N’Zogbia, Heskey, Bent, Agbonlahor. Subs: Guzan, Bannan, Albrighton, Clark, Cuellar, Delfouneso, Jenas.

I'm surprised Jenas doesn't start. Collins should have been dropped and Heskey. But come on Villa.

Im a bit surprised the game hasnt been called off in the circumstances , surely as hes their national manager it would have been understandable .
Title: Re: Swansea City v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: Compass on November 27, 2011, 01:09:02 PM
So the manager had the chance to play Bannan, Gardner and Jenas but instead has chosen Delph, Herd and HESKEY.

He also picked Collins and Hutton AGAIN who defended like clowns.

This match shouldn't be played tbh considering the circumstances. I can't believe our stubborn hopeless manager though.

Indeed, as I'm sure our support at the Liberty stadium will show the respect that is needed in what will be a very strange atmosphere I guess.

Apparently the ref consulted both managers and they decided they wanted the game to go ahead -im surprised by their decision.

I'm blown away by the Speed news; and the fact that the game is on at all; and by the team selection.

Where's Petrov?
Why isn't Jenas playing?
Is Collins playing?

I was going to post something less than supportive about the team selection but given other events it doesn't seem remotely important now
Title: Re: Swansea City v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: ozzjim on November 27, 2011, 01:18:53 PM
Incredibly poor team selection. Collins, Heskey, Hutton should not have been in. Jenas, Bannan, Herd in the middle, with Zog, Bent and Gabby. Bit, bit of creation and might keep the ball. But no. Fucking Heskey plays.

The news on Speed is an incredible shock, and the game will no doubt be subdued, and the Swansea will almost certainly win.

There's an argument that playing the game is a tribute to him, but I don't know where I sit on it. However we are playing the game and I hope we win.

Why? He has nothing to do personally with either club. (although I;m not saying Sky money also swayed their decision)

I'm probably alone, but I find this new-found desire to break out into applause actually disrespectful.  They'll be doing at the Centotaph on Remembrance Sunday next.

A huge crowd standing in silence is of greater significance than doing what football crowds do naturally: make a noise.

Collins said this week that they spoke about how they hadn't put in any proper tackles against Spurs and addressed it in training this week.  By that it looks like GBH was the level of tackle they practised.

I doubt he will be on much less than Luke Young and we paid £4million on him so I doubt it.

Luke Young was not an amazing player but he was a solid, reliable fullback and 100 times the player of Hutton.

Absolutely diabolical business on our part.

He lucky to stay on for that, I think. Why is this useless twat in our team?

To save money?

I doubt he will be on much less than Luke Young and we paid £4million on him so I doubt it.

Luke Young was not an amazing player but he was a solid, reliable fullback and 100 times the player of Hutton.

Absolutely diabolical business on our part.

At least we didn't pay a supposed £9mil for him.

Not too many, I wouldn't have thought. I tend to be on the more upbeat side of things (no, really!) but I'm afraid I have next to no faith in his ability to improve us. Not helped by the current support of the board, to be fair, but we have the players to be doing better than this and in my opinion he is completely failing to make the best of them.

We are boring to watch, devoid of any creativity or imagination (or at least, what there is stays sat on the bench) and lack any kind of obvious purpose beyond 'try and not lose' (as opposed to 'try and win'). I am not filled with hope.

Heskey starting to get universal stick.  It took a while.
I think it's only ever been the managers who rate Heskey

TBH I can see why. He's useful inasmuch as he can tear defences apart by his sheer presence. But he can't be a destructive forward when he's being asked to be a creative midfielder...

Id bring on Jenas (Delph) and either Bannan or Albrighton for Heskey.

Then play either Bannan or Nzogbia behind Bent and either Nzogbia or Albrighton on the right.

3 Bookings now too. All of them 'defensive' players. Delph has to come off because of his booking. If we had Stan on the bench I would also put Herd at Right back and bring Stan on for Hutton... but we cant. Hutton cant lunge in for a tackle on Sinclair all game now.. its going to be a nightmare. Possibly put Cuellar (RB) or Clark (DM, Herd to RB) on for Hutton

                   Given
Herd   Dunne Collins  Warnock
                  Clark
                        Jenas
Nzogbia      Bannan       Gabby
                   Bent

By 70 minutes for me. Starting with Delph and Heskey off for Bannan and Jenas. Wont ever happen though.. We've been absymal.

That was gonna be my point. I can see why SOME managers like him, he suits their playstyle. Big man up front, can (sometimes) put himself about and make a nuisance of himself. But.. to play him in the hole where he lacks the touch, the technique, the passing, the brain.. well, pretty much EVERYTHING needed for that role he lacks. So it makes even less sense than ANY other manager playing him.

There are two players who will always try and pass it regardless of confidence and they're both on the bench (Jenas and Bannan).

Here's a novel idea, rather than worrying about what a team will do to us, why don't we try and make the opposition worry about us instead and try and win the game.

This is fucking terrible, I'm afraid.

The sight of the centre halves just lumping the ball 60 yards up field at every opportunity is beyond depressing.

As for that utter fucking moron Hutton, what is wrong with him? He is utterly, utterly fucking brainless.

Delph has contributed next to nothing other than to get himself booked within minutes.

Sorry, but if we play much more of the season like this, we are going to be in a relegation fight before we know it.

We also have a near total lack of movement off the ball, the number of times we've had someone in possession with ZERO options because nobody is moving off the ball is just so frustrating. We then end up playing at best a 50/50 ball and giving possession away AGAIN.

This really is dire, and I'd rather we just sacked him now than play like this for much more of the season. This is what he does, this is his thing, he's not going to undergo some damascene conversion to attacking, passing football.

Gash.

Dross........players frustrated, almost look like they don't know what's next, what to do, static, Gabby getting very frustrated with Bent, Bent invincible again.

The only positive you can take form this is 1) sign Leighton Dyer and 2) the longer it goes on without a goal the more chance Swansea are of conceding, they can't play us of the park possession wise for 90mins that's for sure.

Same old same ole.......

Watched from about 33 mins in. The commentator was talking about Rooney and Zamora when I tuned in, so I imagine that's a fair reflection on the previous half hours excitement?

From what I've seen it doesn't look so good, not very imaginative football from Villa who still tend to look for the long ball. When it looks like there's a break on, the players check themselves and pass sideways. Where's the urgency? The players look so lethargic.

Swansea don't look that much better either to be honest.

huge half time for McLeish this. We lose against this lot who lets face it are piss poor and his position with the supporters will soon drift into untenable. Think Jenas will definitely come on but Hutton and Heskey must go for me.

We need to get footballers into our wide. Bannan, Ireland. Our formation is all arseways too. Lets get back to basics and the formation we should always play 433.

Herd, Collins, Dunne, Warnock

Aside from Gabby.. Herd has been our best player, surprised to see people blaming this on Herd in midfield. Every team has a player who does the Donkey work. Essien, Makelele, Busquets....

No Herd is nowhere near their standard but he's doing his job very well. Its Heskey and Delph that need to be changed.

A midfield of Jenas, Bannan and Ireland would be horrific. You cant play 3 playmakers without a Herd type player because they would get destroyed. Even Arsenal have Song/ had a Viera. Herd is important in letting Bannan and Jenas play their best..

Hutton reminds me of that right back small heath had. Another lunatic.

except stephen carr is a far better player.

hutton is horrific but I dont think cuellar will improve things there possession wise. which is why herd should move there imo.

What is with Villa and right backs - Watson, Nelson, Charles, Bardsley, Mellberg, Cuellar, Hughes and now Hutton the worst of the lot

mark delaney was decent when fit, luke young when he played right back was cafu in comparison to this useless thug

Herd at right back, Clark in midfield (playing defensive role), Bannan and Jenas (playing attacking roles), Cuellar in, Collins out. Job done.

Post by: Archie on November 27, 2011, 02:35:44 PM
Al the players that can build the play, Bannan, Albrighton and Jenas, are out. Two reliable defenders like Clarke and Cuellar are out where as  three unwatchable palyers like Hutton (probably the worst RB ever), Dunne (doesn't find  a ground-passage even by mistake), and Collins (see Dunne and Hutton) are in.
I could accept a defeat if that meant a new manager with Mc Leish and Faulkner out. But I think that this won't happen.

I seriously would give Bent another 10mins, take him and Heskey of, move Gabby into the centre and push more bodies into the midfield where they are strongest, let Gabby get the goals, which he will do in a more central role.

We need to shake it up some way as good as Swansea are in possession we are making them look better than they are, good job they haven't a goal scorer.

Surely better to try and create a chance for Bent to score.  It's harsh to judge him with the service, and he is working hard - he's tracked their left winger back a few times when N'Zog couldn't be arsed.

great block from collins there. hutton is absolutely hopeless

awful tackle from warnock. he has committed 2 certain yellow card offences today.

what an awful side we are

Watched from about 33 mins in. The commentator was talking about Rooney and Zamora when I tuned in, so I imagine that's a fair reflection on the previous half hours excitement?

From what I've seen it doesn't look so good, not very imaginative football from Villa who still tend to look for the long ball. When it looks like there's a break on, the players check themselves and pass sideways. Where's the urgency? The players look so lethargic.

Swansea don't look that much better either to be honest.

Have a weird feeling we might go for Zamora in Jan.  Does everything Heskey is supposed to do without looking like an extra from Gerry Cottle's Circus.

Why didnt Jenas hit that!?!

This is what happens when our best midfielders are playing.. look at all those goal scoring chances we've had since they came on. Yeah we may not have scored... but when you extrapolate those chances over 90 minutes.... its much more likely to  score....
