N'zog dropped for Bent.

actually not surprised about that. He'll play a part today, but I didn't want to see Ireland dropped. He needs a run of games, and he started to show some promise last week. Also, all of the good teams rotate their squads, and we should be working to the point where we are comfortable resting Gabby or Bent or Petrov. Obviously we don't have as much luxury today, but it is something we need to do as it also gives others a chance to stake their claim and keeps the squad on its toes.

Bannan - hoping he will be the star we are longing for.

Aston Villa: Given, Hutton, Dunne, Collins, Warnock, Bannan, Petrov, Delph, Ireland, Agbonlahor, Bent. Subs: N’Zogbia, Guzan, Clark, Herd, Albrighton, Weimann, Heskey.

Will Jenas ever be fit?!?

If McLeish is picking on form why did he get out of his way to get Hutton (who's been awful btw) when Herd performed really well and should still be given the chance?

And where the fuck is Jenas? What an injury prone signing.

I like the idea of that on current form.

So do I. Still, I'm surprised, wan't sure if AM had the balls to drop him, especially with how N'Zogbia looking forward to playing his former club.

Come on Villa!

Hutton is one of the worst players we've had at the Villa in years.  Chris Herd must be as gutted as I am that he was dropped for that waste of space.

I'd be a bit surprised if we play 4-4-2. We've only done that once, v Newcastle, and they played 442 too. Wigan will have 3 in the midfield, so I'd expect us to match that.

I reckon it just means shunting Gabby wide left from last week's team.

Pretty happy with that side personally, but we'll need Ireland and Gabby to be athletic and support Bent a la second half last Sunday. If they don't we'll struggle to connect Bent to the rest of the side

Ireland looks a threat. Nice to see him looking more involved - he and Bannan in the side is good.

Someone needs to tell Collins that we have midfielders to pass the ball, give it to them you useless lump!

Was just going to post the same thing - defensively he is pretty good, but his distribution is shocking. I know they've done well so far this year, but I do think we need to replace one of him or Dunne. I'd replace Collins.

Bannan has a wonderful knack of hitting the ball into the heart of the opposition box straight to a Villa man. Gabby should have fed it back to the wee man then, not out to Delph.

Funny game. Slow, ponderous, and with an odd shape. But we've had 3-4 really good chances. I'd be inclined to bring N'Zogbia on for Delph tho we need to see if Ireland's injured first.

Bent should have had a couple. Gabby and Bannan the standouts for me. Bannan looks really good. Confident, keen to make the killer pass. Doesn't get his head down if he makes a mistake.

Good first half, that. We really can play some good stuff at times, and Gabby's goal was superb. Bannan and Ireland (one misplaced pass aside) have been impressive, and the defense look in control of things. Not the best half from Delph again, but Petrov is doing a very good job in there.

Ireland has played well in my opinion, and I'm pleased to see how involved he wants to be - dropping deep to get the ball, putting in tackles. I hope they're signs that he is getting his head right.

Delph is having another shocker - is there a worse midfielder in the league?

I know some folk on here have a hard on foe him - but for me the only claret and blue he should be close to should have a Burnley or Scunthorpe crest on it

How bad is Hutton, seriously shit.  Out of position constantly and can't cross for toffee.  Awful.

Have to say, I normally don't like to write players off, but Hutton thus far looks like one of the worst players we've had for a long time.

He looks poor, but has had 3 very inconsistent seasons with the confidence being knocked out of him, and has put some good performances in before now. I know it is hard, but we have to give him a season to sort it. If he doesn't, then ship him out. Luke Young was a much better player mind, as is Chris Herd at the moment!

As for Ireland, I would give him time too. The more football he gets the stronger he gets, the more hungry he looks. His forward runs are excellent and something we have not had in there for a long time, he could have been put clean through 2-3 times with better balls first half, has tackled back and looks interested for the first time this season.

Bannan needs to be central every week at home. The boy is pure class, that left foot is like a wand.

Delph still has the give it away bug from last week - so frustrating - he has potential, and you can't leave him out today with the players around him as we would be even more lightweight, but he needs to learn to keep the ball when under pressure.

I still think we're playing to deep and need both Dunne and Collins to bring the ball 15 yards before passing it on because too often we're not getting enough players forward.

An huge improvement on the first half last week but know there's plenty more we can give, especially from midfield. Wigan are as expected, pass it about well but no real threat up front.

Overall I think Wigan have looked more comfortable in possession and look more creative going forward, our midfield is non existent IMO which is why every time Wigan come forward within seconds they are down our throat.

But but but............we are 1-0 up....

I have to say but fair play to Pardew. Cockrings for owners, hasn't had much of anything to spend, lost their best players, yet he's got his team playing some very good stuff and they're sitting 3rd right now. He came into the job as an unpopular signing on the back of them canning Hughton who was popular. He's done very well.

I don't need to - I'm asking whether of all the right backs around, whether Hutton was the best, and finding it hard to think he was.

Hmmm. We still are playing too deep, in my opinion. I suppose that's how McLeish wants it (and MON always seemed to ask the team to sit very deep, too), but it means that we give so much ground to the opposition when they get the ball. They always seem to be able to just walk forward towards our penalty area.

Still, we're looking good enough today.....for now.

It'd be nice if we could keep a clean sheet and avoid the almost inevitable nail biting final ten minutes for a change. Be nice to see it through to the end in a leisurely fashion.

East Fife 3 Forfar 3

Could this wind up East Fife 5 Forfar 4?

surely East Fife 4  Forfar 5?

Either'd be nice.

I actually liked Maloney. Clearly wasn't all right mentally, though.

I think he could have done well for us had he got more of a chance. He'll go and score now of course so that we have to live on our wits for the last minutes,

Was it him that scored direct from a free kick for us at Chelsea (I think)?

Seem to recall that felt like the first time we'd done so for about 100 years.

If we knew Luke Young wanted to leave (and, to be honest, when does a player wanting to leave mean you automatically have to let them go?) then we could have gone for Brown.

The point is, on evidence thus far, he's gash.

I'd honestly rather see Beye get a game.

i think mcleish did know this but i think he was always interested in hutton as per the journos reports all through august, but a club needed to take young from us before we could buy.

its no coincidense that o'niell (who brought him), macdonald, houllier and mcliesh have all otped to not play beye.

as i said hutton is the better option to beye and i think he will come good, he hasnt been great but he could be alot worse!

That sub makes sense. Zog and Gab wide (presumably Zog on the right and Gab on the left), Heskey to the main target man role and Bannan to the centre. We could keep the ball well here.

I think the free kick was against Man City and was his first goal for us. Think he might have got a free-kick against Chelsea too (the one Cech should have saved but let slip past). He definitely got two goals for us that day.
