Nervous...we need to start well. Soccer AM was a bit weird today...

I've a feeling this will be a game to remember for some reason.

It absolutely is a concern.  Neither Herd or Lichaj are anywhere near good enough.

Should have just laid in Bent.

Delph needs to learn that could cannot go to ground like that.

Warnock still diving in and getting beaten easily I see.

I hate Hunt.

Stephen Warnock for Ashley Cole would be nice! In fact, Stephen Warnock for anyone. He is gash. Smelly smelly gash.

In attacking terms Gabby, Zog and Bent look really good at times. Heskey is doing ok too. I would like to see a proper number 10 behind Bent though, or Milner. Milner on loan in for Emile is my final answer!

As I worried, we do look weak defensively on the right. Our wingers look dangerous against their full backs though. Heskey a typical performance: good positioning and hold up play mixed with the occasional really ponderous shit touch

See refereeing is not going to be any more consistent. Book Delph, but Henry and Stearman commit fouls just as bad and they get a talking too. Twat.

He does not work the wing like Ashley did in terms of team play. Good on the ball and flashy, but need to settle into the role. He needs to get higher up the pitch too, seems to be getting the ball quite deep.

We are very poor in defence. It's going to be a long season. Expect some tankings against good oposition. After being top six steadily and pushing for higher this is very depressing.

Agreed - that's why I think we should play narrower, with an authentic 3rd midfielder instead of Heskey and N'Zog and Gabby playing as support to Bent.

Perhaps we need Jarvis to complement our wing play ...

Well, I think losing LY will hurt more than might appear, unless we replace with similarly-effective defender. His cover-play was very important to us when he played.
Ideally we'd get two new FB - one for each side.

Without Heskey the ball will just ping back though Risso, he is doing a good job in there. Bannan and Makoun for Petrov and Delph on 60 for me, with Albrighton for Heskey and Zog moving central later if no cigar.

Title: Re: Aston Villa v Wolves match thread
Post by: Monty on August 27, 2011, 12:58:07 PM
Positives: Petrov, Delph and Gabby look pretty sharp, and all the defence look comfortable on the ball, with each centre back making a few great passes.

Negatives: the defence look pretty worrying when they're run at, especially on the right (predictably). Also, I'm sorry, but Heskey does not do enough to justify how much his presence in that position alters our style of play, and sometimes his lack of vision and final ball is actively detrimental. Get Bannan or Ireland on.

We shouldn't be pinging the ball there in the first place. We have class in midfield, the ball shouldn't sail over their heads.

Negatives:  Defense worryingly exposed down the flanks, No tempo or urgency to our play, No creativity in the final third.

bent needs to be included in play more.

Well he's the fulcrum of our play. However, our style of play is not exactly effective, and that style is dictated by his presence.

Definitely get Bannan or Ireland on for Heskey.  Heskey might work hard, but his control and passing are woeful at times.  Probably Makoun on for Delph as a sending off looks reasonably likely (the tackle for the booking was a ridiculous challenge to make).

Mcleish needs to give em a bloody good talkin to.

I've barely noticed Bent.

N'Zogbia was the only player for us in that first half who showed some creativity and taking defenders on. Petrov and Delph have alright in the middle but if we bring in Makoun id like to think we would keep the ball and able to press forward

Crowd 8k lower than last season's tie. The Board must be pretty disillusioned with the first 2 crowd-sizes of the season.
Is recession, holiday time, the McGinge factor or general disillusion.
I gave up my ST due to job-loss; I would have retained it otherwise.

Delph off for Albrighton.
