Title: Non-League Day
Post by: martin@ardenley on June 30, 2011, 08:25:31 PM
Good morning

following the success of last year's campaign, the Non-League Day (NLD) team are delighted to announce that this year's event will be held on Saturday September 3rd 2011. With England playing Bulgaria on Friday the 2nd, this means nearly a million fans of Premier League and Championship clubs will be without a game on Saturday 3rd. If you require a refresher on both the concept and purpose of the day, the original website can be found here http://www.nonleagueday.co.uk/ . Additionally, there was short article on BBC London News <
>. The new website is scheduled for launch in July once the fixtures are released, and will include details on how to find the nearest non-league fixture to where you live.

NLD is a celebration of the semi-professional and amateur game, and a chance for fans of bigger clubs to experience football at a level they may be otherwise unfamiliar with. Moreover, it is a chance to shine a light on the hundreds of clubs in this country who are almost exclusively volunteer run, and do so much good for the local community, be it through coaching, fund raising or providing opportunities for local people.

What we really need this year is for supporters of the bigger sides to back the event, by spreading the word on forums, fanzines or through official media channels. Given your online presence, it would be fantastic if you could post something to drum up interest. I know last year a lot of Villa fans really enjoyed visiting somewhere new and local, so hopeully this will be a headstart!

The NLD team will continue to do as much as possible to promote the day, but the more assistance we get doing this, the better. If you have any questions, or wish to contribute in any way, please feel free to email either James@nonleagueday.co.uk or mike@nonleagueday.co.uk

Kindest Regards
James Doe + Mike Bayly

The venue for the H&V Big Day Out will be decided after due research, debate, consultation, vote and Dave Cooper's recommendation. It'll be Stourbridge.

They tend to come out later the lower down the pyramid you go to allow for ground-sharing. Some of the lower leagues only do them a month at a time.

I am biased because I work for Solihull Moors and it is the third biggest club in Birmingham.

For £10 you get a match ticket, A bar to get a couple of beers and watch Sky on the big screen. Good match day food and then a Beer after the game without hardly moving a muscle. Sometimes you get a great game of football,

Anyhow my vote is for Solihull Moors

I usually go to Pilkington XXX FC in Kings Norton, usually go a few times a season.

After going to a Kidderminster game last season (£14!!!!!) the difference in standard wasn't that noticeable.

Fixtures for The Conference leagues have been slightly delayed while they sort out the Rushden and Diamonds debacle, this will in turn lead to delays as you go down the pyramid.
Should start to be sorted out next week though.

Grounds with easy public transport and at least one good pub nearby include the aforementioned Stourbridge and Halesowen. Gornal isn't the easiest, you have to bet things like buses, but it's a great ground.
There's always Telford with a stop off at Oakengates on the way, me and Mr Jeffries are already looking at that for when Tamuff go up there.
Maybe also Darlaston or Bilston (for the Olde White Rose and The Trumpet?
Lye Town for The Windsor Castle?
Worcester City for loads of pubs (although I'm doing that on 6th August for the Tamworth friendly).

I'll probably be Stour!

Tipton Town are my local team but their ground doesn't seem particularly welcoming (running track around it) plus the chairman has just been sent down for fraud. Too many similarities with another team I know.... I'll stick to watching them for five minutes from the adjacent Asda car park on the odd Saturday afternoon.

S'pose the next closest team would be Bilston... Does Wednesbury have a non-league team? I never hear of them if they do.  I'm not indigenous to the area though so my hearts not really in it.

Haven't had one for years, the last Wednesbury Town team folded about four years ago but were playing in Darlaston anyway.

Rushall Olympic's move into the big league needs all the support it can get.  And The Royal Oak over the road serves (amongst others) the ales of the Backyard Brewery - Backyard Blonde is a joy to behold.

Sadly, the nearby Boathouse is not to be touched with (pardon the pun) a barge pole.

Well, if nothing else Gornal would surely appreciate the extra money a few of us would spend, either of you have any info on maybe match ball sponsorship as well? Wouldn't cost much each.
A few of us on a (now sadly gone) non-league forum did this up in Gateshead a few years back when they were in financial trouble.

So they are not the third biggest club in Birmingham as you stated earlier!

So we're back to either Sutton Coldfield Town or Romulus who are both Northern League South Division or if you don't count Sutton as part of Brum (and some don't) then we're down to Pilkington XXX, Cadbury Athletic, Castle Vale and Castle Vale JKS who are all in Midland Combination Premier.

Aston Villa - 1st tier

Sutton Coldfield Town & Romulus - 8th tier
Pilkington XXX, Cadbury Athletic, Castle Vale & Castle Vale JKS - 10th tier

Yep, sounds about right, at a push you could include Boldmere St Michael and Highgate at 9th tier.
Altogether pretty dismal really.

The Black Country is better:

West Brom & Wolves - 1st tier
Walsall - 3rd tier
Rushall - 7th tier (Chasetown at a real push)
Stourbridge & Halesowen- 8th tier
Causeway, Tipton, Tividale & Willenhall - 9th tier
AFC Wulfrunians, Black Country Rangers, Cradley Heath, Bustleholme, Dudley Sports, Dudley Town, Goodrich, Gornal, Darlaston, Lye, Sporting Khalsa, Wolverhampton Sporting, Wolves Casuals, Wednesfiels & Walsall Wood - 10th tier.

Whether it is or not, Birmingham's non-league scene is still poor.

With the exception of London, isn't the same true for most big cities? The big city clubs tend to be in the league leaving teams from smaller towns in the non-league pyramid. Struggling to think of too many big non-league clubs from Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Newcastle, Bristol, etc. One or two but not loads.
Title: Re: Non-League Day

Sort of true, but in all of those cities you can watch plenty of non-league football at step 4 (Northern, Southern and Isthmian leagues) and above, in Brum there is nothing and hasn't been since Moor Green went to Solihull. Even Bristol has Mangotsfield.

I have been watching the occasional non-league match for a few seasons now. Given the nonsense happening at Villa I have decided to give up my season ticket and become committed to a lower league club, Bradford Park Avenue, for a season. The atmosphere and conversation at such games is fine and the players show commitment, especially when playing FC Utd (crowds of 2000 approx). Being an old git now (before the Third Div days of glory) it sort of reminds me of what the Premiership has lost. I hope to be back but Learner & Faulkner don't own me.

Romulus are playing their home FA Cup ties at Chasetown this year. Link here (http://www.pitchero.com/clubs/romulus/news/fa-cup-ties-to-be-played-at-ch-339074.html).

I think I've narrowed it down to one of these teams:-

Castle Vale
Heath Hayes
Stourport Swifts
Tividale
Alvechurch
Wolverhampton Casuals
Nuneaton Griff
Cradley Town
Continental Star
Romulus
Tipton Town
Boldmere St. Michaels
Bartley Green

I think I've narrowed it down to one of these teams:-

Castle Vale  - Ye Gods, have you been there?
Heath Hayes - Nice ground, not easy to get to though.
Stourport Swifts - See above
Tividale - Lack of decent pubs unless we meet in Dudley or Carter's Green
Alvechurch - Middle of nowhere
Wolverhampton Casuals - See above
Nuneaton Griff - It's in Nuneaton!
Cradley Town - Difficult to get to
Continental Star - I don't even know where they are playing this season, the ultimate nomads!
Romulus - If it's a cup tie they won't be at home because of the plastic pitch
Tipton Town - horrible athletics stadium, no pubs
Boldmere St. Michaels - Could meet in Sutton but fairly decent pub free round there.
Bartley Green - Middle of nowhere

We may have to look outside of the FA Cup!

How far is Boldmere St. Michaels from Sutton Coldfield town centre then?

How far is Boldmere St. Michaels from Sutton Coldfield town centre then?

Not really walkable, but get a train to Wylde Green station and it's about ten minutes from there. Got a decent clubhouse at Boldmere as well, plus you can watch the action on the bowling green next door if the game is crap.
Boldmere play Stourbridge tomorrow, might pop along if I am feeling better.

went to halesowen wednesday to see them play hednesford town, they won 3-2, got a really good squad this season.it was my first ever non league game and i was suprised by the standard of football, non of the hoofball stuff, some really good passing.not saying halesowen play like barcelona, but i think barcelona are having an effect on all football teams around the world because we watch them so much and they've  shown that it's cool to pass the ball to keep posession and not to rush to get the ball forward.slowly and pleasing on the eye.oh and Bartley green have got halesowen tomorrow in a friendly.

All.  Don't forget Non League Day @ Rugby Town FC who will be playing at home in the FA Cup that day, plus we are playing Gornal/Shifnall Town where gate receipts will be shared so two non league clubs will benefit from your attendance.

We have a seven a side tourney with teams from Leicester City, Coventry City, Northampton Town and Rugby Town competeing, with the winners taking home a huge cup presented on the main pitch at half time.  The tourney is free to enter as long as you come into the ground and watch the footie.  High standard of catering and an outside drinking licence means you can watch the footie and have a bevvy at the same time.  tourney will be played on state of the art 3g pitches.

A speed ball challenge will also be in action to measure the velocity of ones shooting.

Come along and join us and don't forget to bring your flags and scarves....

To enter a team please ring 07865 094 814.  No charge.

Nice ground at Rugby, you can do train spotting from the top of the main stand when the game is boring (that's actual spotting of trains rather than injecting heroin, although I suppose you could do that as well).

Couple of very decent boozers in town but it's a fair trek from there to the ground.

Teams confirmed for the Rugby Town FC Non League Day, 7 a side tournament are:

Coventry City x 2
Aston Villa
Rugby Town
Leicester City
Valley Old Boys
Gornal Athletic (if they win FA Cup preliminary round v Shifnall Town).

If The Villa want to put in another side that would bring it up to eight and give us two leagues of four with a final match of the two league winners.  So you would all get at least three games.

No cost for tournament played on top quality 3g pitches.  All you have to do is come into the game.  Free car parking and free seating in ground.  Fully licenced bar and excellent catering facilities.   Train from New St travelling in a group of 3 is just £4 return and the ground is a 10 minute walk from the station.

I'd imagine we're about to witness the largest audience for a non league game ever this Friday night, Ascot United vs Wembley FC in a clever move by Budweiser:

Quote
Budweiser to sponsor Facebook’s first-ever live football match

Budweiser is to broadcast the FA Cup first round match between Ascot United and Wembley FC on its Facebook fan page, marking the first live broadcast of any sport on the social network.

The move will put the non-league sides in front of a potential audience of 700 million this Friday night.

FA Cup sponsor Budweiser brokered the deal with the teams. Facebook said that the live stream is not sponsored by, endorsed by, administered by or associated with the social networking website.

The live stream from Ascot's 1,150-capacity ground will be made available via an application built into the US brewer's UK Facebook page.

Budweiser marketing director Ian Newell said: "Budweiser is committed to bringing the world's most prestigious knockout competition closer to the fans. What better way to demonstrate this than by broadcasting the very first kick to a global audience via Facebook? This is the first time an FA Cup tournament fixture has been broadcast live on the social network, which is great news for football fans and clubs alike."

Budweiser said that the match, which kicks off at 7.45pm on Friday, will only be available to those of legal drinking age.

Viewers must be aged 18 and over and have "liked" Budweiser's Facebook page to gain access to the free live stream.

Ascot, of the Hellenic League, take on Combined Counties side Wembley at their Racecourse Ground in one of 204 extra preliminary-round fixtures.

Wembley player-manager Ian Bates told the FA website: "We don't pay a penny to our players but we've got a good side. If we play our game, we have a great chance. The FA Cup is an extremely difficult competition. You're playing teams in leagues above who have more resources and it's hard to progress further."

Wembley chairman Brian Gumm added: "The revenue isn't that important. It's all about being in the competition and hopefully doing well."

I think money from the Rugby benefactor (Cecil Duckworth) may be the only hope but it seems unlikely. The ground in the middle of the motorway roundabout plan or whatever it was seems to have died a death.

Or we could merge with Harriers, Redditch and Bromsgrove (all fellow financial basket cases) to form the Worcestershire all-stars, playing in a super stadium outside Droitwich.

Ideally Wusster would stay at the rather marvellous ground they are in now but it's prime real estate.

So are the mighty Worcester City. 3pm v Corby. Come and see a fine old football ground before it's demolished for housing in a couple of years and the club disappears. Just follow the floodlights to get there (and how often can you say that these days?)

If you show your season ticket tomorrow you can get in for £5 at Worcester.

Cecil Duckworth offered Worcester a new ground a few years ago but the Worcester board turned him down and now there is a real prospect they could go out of business when the ground gets sold.

Confirmed Rugby V Gornal for me.

See you there then matey - I'll have the European Cup winning shirt on and a scruffy beard with the Gornal fans, come and say hi!

I shall be confined to the press area I'm afraid, working for community radio but I shall keep an eye out for the sacred colours and the not so sacred chin-muff. Your choice of shirt will give me the ideal opportunity to crowbar a completely spurious mention of Villa into the commentary.

I fully expect a YouTube clip of me making it into the commentary.

will there be a recording of this for us to listen to?

Safe travel.

I'll be at rugby as well, albeit Lydney v Hertford.

This is Rugby Union and therefore counts as Non(Rugby)-League

Went to Ramsbottom Utd v Salford City last night in FA Cup Preliminary Round.  The trophy was on display (http://www.thefa.com/TheFACup/FACompetitions/TheFACup/NewsAndFeatures/2011/ramsbottom-020911), the kick-off had to be delayed 15 minutes to get the crowd in, Salford scored in the first minute but Rammy won 2-1 with a 93 minute winner.

Rugby Town 0-0 Gornal Athletic.

What a fantastic match and day out, cracking club and bar at Rugby. Gornal unlucky not to come away with the win, hitting the crossbar in injury time and told by a couple of people at that end of the ground that it was over the line.

Gornal were dead unlucky not to be going back with the prize money.  Enjoyable day from a healthy crowd, many thanks for your attendance and hope you enjoyed yourselves.

Definitely over the line from Gornal at the end today. May go up there for the replay though.

Cheers for a good day Tom, tournament was good fun and the ground & facilities etc are fantastic. Good luck to you.

Stour 2 Chesham 1. A sending-off, a fight on the pitch, a strop after being subbed, 1-0 down 2-1 up and the Stour chicken curry is back on the menu.

We had a decent crowd at Solihull Moors for the visit of Hinckley as they also had a few fans in attendance. We also had lee Hendrie and father watching. we lost 2-1 and that is now 7 losses in 7 games.

Enjoyed the day thoroughly, I didn't really have time to socialise though. I thought Gornal gave a great account of themselves although there is the slight feeling that their chance may have come and gone. Never the less I shall be at Garden Walk on Tuesday, rather that than watching the latest chapter of Frank Lampard's ever disapointing international career.

Sadly I have to be up for work early doors on Wednesday so will be unable to attend the replay.

Hopefully Gornal will have some players back from injury, to say that was a makeshift back four would be an understatement!

Gornal won the replay 4-3. Sounded a fantastic match.

Local radio picked the best time to give the Gornal chairman a call to see how the game was going -

I went to Hyde FC v Highgate. Finished 3-2 fantastic game. And you can drink on the terraces!

The reply at Gornal was, I have to say, one of the best games I have been to in a long time for many reasons.

The players cared.
The players gave 100%
It was £4 to get in
You could drink on the TERRACE
The 105 fans all had a great time without any sniff of trouble
The game was all about football,  didnt have to kick off at a time to please Sky.
