2-1 Everton, We'll go 1 up early on through Bent, they'll equalise just before half time from a corner, most probably through Cahill, we'll have chances galore in the second half, hit the post and then they'll get the winner in injury time

I'll go for a 2-2 draw.

Everton have reached 40 points so will hopefully be thinking about their summer holidays early whereas we cannot defend for toffee (no pun intended)

Ashley Young and Darren Bent to score for us after good performances for England but to be honest I could not care less if Gary McCallister's gran scored them both as long as we get something!

I'd take a draw right now.  But is there a better time to play them?  I gather Fellani, Saha & Arteta are out and isn't Rodwell doubtful?

Come on lads, let's have a bloody go.

Oh and BTW - 4 4 2 please, with Young on the wing (crazy I know) and Bent and Ivanhoe up front.

Unfortunately I cant see anything other than an Everton win. I think we will lose 2 or 3 nil.

Without slitting my wrists I am now thinking our only chance of staying up is others getting tonked each week, rather than us winning.

Wigan, WBA and either us  or Blackburn I reckon

The only hope is I dont think the others will win more than one game out of 8 either !

They will have lots of chances or half-chances first half, you just know it, they'll kick out of the blocks quicker, and inevitably be a threat from set pieces. The issue will be whether or not we can cope and grow into the game as it goes on. Gun to my head, I think we'll lose this, but then beat Newcastle, barring massive injury/suspension developments (touch wood).

Saw the recent game between Everton and Small Heath - Everton were quite poor on the night.
If we can just show some pride and passion for this game I think we can get a win - 2-1 to the Villa.

Dunne o.g for them - Bent and Young for us.

Everton starting to play well, looking up the league rather than down, scoring goals more easily, and solid defence.  We are short on confidence, cant score enough and concede too easily.  Therefore its a two nil win for Villa, and Q a baffled MOTD studio, and Mrs Moyes hiding all the rolling pins in her house

What's the roll call for defenders looking like? I've been away a few days, might have missed something, but this seems to be the situation at present:

Walker (injured for England)
Cuellar (fit)
Collins (fit - played for Wales at least)
Dunne (fit/injured/banned from the club/who knows)
Clark (suspended)
Baker (fit)

I'd be surprised if we get anything out of this, to be honest. 1-1 with my optimistic hat on, but I'm going for 0-2. Bent and Young to leave their England form behind.

The Everton view from grandoldteam.com:

Everton v Aston Villa. Saturday 2nd April @ 15.00.
Another free weekend in a weird season. How are we eighth? If that bad David Blaine wannabe hadn’t scored for Fulham then we’d have been seventh. The league is a closed shop for European places but were glad of a little breathing space away from a massive battle royale to stay in the Premiership this season.

The win against Fulham was a welcome one meaning we’ve took ten points from twelve. You do sense it’s a fragile run of form as we just haven’t got going this season have we?

Onto (the) Villa then, who are having an absolute dog of a season and have plenty of fans pretending that they didn't want O’Neill out. His replacement is Gerard “Ged” Houllier; one time of the LFC persuasion and who earlier this season had me tickled when he returned to Anfield, it was like seeing the ex wife you still yearn for. The current wife was not impressed and rightfully so. I can’t help but look at Houllier and think of the scene in Total Recall where they are out in the Martian atmosphere without protective gear and their eyes pop out and stuff.

They’ll be backed well by their travelling fans singing some really crap songs. What’s that My Lord one all about? Teds. It also seems around those parts that an alpha male wears Naf Naf trackie bottoms and a jarg Ellesse top. Crap profiling apart, they’re a grand traditional club so it must be a real worry to be battling it out with the Wigans and Blackpools of the world.
They sit one point above relegation and are in the middle of a bad run with three damaging defeats on the bounce. It’s weird as they do have a talented squad with some good young players and recently spunked 25m on to take Darren Bent. They certainly have a team capable of beating us with our current injuries.

The footballing pixie of luck smites us again with an injury to Saha, leaving Cahill, Beckford and Anichebe fighting over two places up front. Or in Victor’s case; punching the turf in anger and trying to gulp three tonnes of oxygen. It doesn’t bode well for the rest of the season on the goal front, which not much change from the first half of the season really.
It will be too early for Arteta so Neville and Rodwell will probably start in the middle. We need more offensive nous from Rodwell rather than trying to imitate Neville. Coleman looked a little bit more raw last time out which is a good thing, Osman should retain his place as he’s in a decent run of form and lets be honest; the Russian sadly isn’t going to make it here. The defence should remain the same.

Three points in a tight game would be most welcome and have us contemplating an unlikely finish above what we achieved last season. Mad.

Like the Everton summary above, nice to read something honest and a bit self-deprecating

And they appear to have a few injuries too which is good

Having said that, 2-1 to them for me

We will score first around the 20th minute then do our usual of retreating into our shell, dropping ever ever deeper

Equaliser in about the 60th minute, winner for them around the 78 minute mark

Sound familiar?

You bloody bet it does...

Made me chuckle that - fans who sing "Everton, Everton, Everton , Everton, Everton" and "Tell me ma me ma"  have no right to criticise our songs :)

Strangley enough my Liverpudlian friends think we have a good repertoire of songs and think the Paul McGrath song mildly amusing

Weirdly optimistic about this one.

Think we'll get at least a point, wouldn't be surprised if we got all three.

We do need to start brightly though, and preferably have a 2 goal cushion in place for when we (a) concede from a set piece (b) concede in the last 10 minutes or (c) concede from a set piece in the last ten minutes.

2-1 Villa

That's what I'm telling myself.

They've lost to some real dross at Goodison this year - and lost heavily. When they're bad, they're horrid. Plus they have a rake of injuries. Pressure might just be off a wee bit now at 40 points as well, so they could go one of two ways -just go through the motions and see it as another fixture to fulfill. Or play well with the shackles off. Lets hope it's the former.

Of course, a number of teams this season haven't turned up until the latter stages of a match and still  had enough to either beat us or rob us of a victory, so that might not be enough. Particularly if the Calamity Twins at CB do their running through treacle routine. But I'm determined to ride the positivity train. Get on it, its a good trip.

Whilst it's not the end of the world if we come away with nothing from Goodison,
a win of any description would settle a few nerves -

If reports from Merseyside are true the Blues have several key players out-

I'm hoping / praying that Ged changes the system to 4-4-2 with Young7 on

I'm sure similar was said after Man Citeh away -we then went to Chelsea and put in one of our best performances of the season. Anything approaching that level of performance should be enough to see off Everton.

Sunderland at home was also a horror show almost (almost) on a par with Wolves. Yet soon after we put a half decent little run together.

I'm not sold on Houllier by any stretch, and I'd be quite happy if whilst they're up there the board have a word in David Moyes' shell-like, with a view to an exciting new opportunity starting this summer.

But I'd like to hope that Wolves at home was just a really bad day at the office and we'll follow it up with some kind of positive reaction.

Fair assesment. Really think we are due a performance. Everton are not in great shape and we have to be upbeat with good international performances and Collins and Dunne available .......

You'd like to think the whole Villa camp will be totally pumped for this one, and shove a few words down certain journo's throats

As for Moyes, does anyone think he'd come with a bit too much Everton baggage ?

I think (hope) he'd be switched on enough to make the distinction between his ex employer and his current one, should such a scenario ever come about.

Would be only natural for him if/ when he does leave Everton to still retain a degree of affection for them seeing as he's been there so long.

I would have a concern that maybe he'll be one of those managers who might only be effective at one club. See Sir Brian. But lets cross that bridge if/ when we come to it.

Very fair assesment
If morale is as low and the club is in as much chaos behind the scenes as it appears, I can see us getting a real tonking at Goodison.

I'll still be there looking through my fingers.

This match has got draw written all over it!

The chances of us keeping a clean sheet are slim to none so that rules out a 1-0 victory.  I can see us getting a penalty and them scoring a late equalizer.

2-2

I recommend parking along the south side of Walton Hall Park in Walton Hall Avenue (A580), facing out of the city, i.e eastwards. This road becomes the East Lancashire Road and leads you straight out of the city to the M57. From the park it's a 15 minute walk to Goodison.

Ticket availability is still 'good' according to the website, on sale to anyone with a booking history.

I'm taking my mate with me to this one, his record is W2 D0 L0 and those 2 were both against a team in blue (although a much shabbier one than Saturday's opponents).  The 5-1 and last season's 1-0 at the sty.  Therefore we can't lose :)

Everton are quite simply a better team, the Wolves game showed that we have no fight in us and to win the game we would need to score a MINIMUM of 2 goals.
It ain't gonna happen

3-0 to Everton.

GH will never do it but in the situation we find ourselves in I would make the first priority to NOT concede a goal and therefore I would play the following team:

                       Friedel

Walker   Cuellar  Collins/Dunne    Baker (or L.Young if fit)

                        Herd

 Albrighton   NRC      Delph        Young

                       Bent/Gabby

That team provides a very solid base from which to work from, unfortunately Downing misses out because we need battlers. Also I would go back to our old style of FAST counter attacking football for no other reason than it suites us and we have the players to play it, its not rocket science!

Unfortunately GH will NOT play that team or anything like it, so therefore we will lose!

This will go one of two ways. We'll be well up for it, surprise Everton and win reasonably well...

OR

We'll get absolutely twatted. I think it's one of those games that just says either/or for me. I don't see a middle ground. We'll play really really well, or just look like a lame dog that needs shooting.

With that in mind...expect a 0-0 draw now!!

The players should be pumped for this

If there's evidence of a lack of grit, stomach etc for the battle and we get done, I'm not sure what the club does ??

Sack him, the players have won

Back him, they won't play for him, we go down

This is complex

This is how I would definitely go as well.  Capello has shown Houllier the formation to play and although I can see why Ged has tried to get Albrighton, Downing and Young in the same team, we now need to shore it up and stick 3 in the middle.

If he plays this team, I can see us at least drawing.  I fear however he will go the usual 4-4-1-1 and an unfortunate 2-0 defeat will await.

I cannot believe there are people with any sort of sanity or football knowledge at all that are advocating 442 in any shape or form against an Everton side that dominate every facet of the game with a 451.It really does just defy all reason  that we will go to Goodison and control the game when all they do is congest the midfield and control the ball.I hate to agree with Houllier on anythin but if he goes and tries to beat a reasonable Everton side with 442 we will have about 30% posession and get destroyed!!!!!tenner on super mark to score first and we win 3-2 is 275-1 for me.

1-2. Felliani 78. A. Young 6, 17.

Fellaini, aka Simon Barlow from Corrie's hair inspiration, is crocked.

No disrespect to anyone, but I can't understand why people 'have a feeling we'll win this one', in fact 27 people do.

Why?

Because we're not all wrist-slashing miserablists.
Don't get me wrong, I don't want to lose, in fact it would royally piss me off, I certainly won't just shrug my shoulders at it.
Going to all the home games season in, season out get's you like that.

I had a strong feeling we would lose to Wolves, probaly 1-0,  and I have strong feeling we will win here, probably 1-0 with A Young getting the goal late on.  No reason or logic to it, just a gut feeling.

Quite so Mark.  I'm not sure why it makes you a "wrist slashing miserablist" not to expect to win this one.  We hardly ever win up there, and our away form is shit.  I'd say in this case, "realsitic" would be a fairer description.

Saha, Arteta and Sideshow Bob definitely out, and their next two best players facing fitness tests?

I'd say it's far from a nailed on victory for them.

Plus, any side that loses 1-4 at home to the Olbiyun isn't all that.

Would be happy enough with a minimum of two points from the next two games, and I wouldn't go as far as to say that I expect us to beat Everton, that it's a must win game and so on. TBH, providing we show a marked improvement on the Wolves no-show, and go down swinging this time, that will probably suffice.

I will have a lazy tenner on 2-1 Villa though.

I don't get all the hype for Rodwell? What's so special about him. I haven't seen much of him, but anytime I have, he's not really done anything to warrant the hype or price tag. Granted he's young, but for arguments sake, Wilshere looks the mutts nutts. That one I get. Rodwell? Now. Is he a really quality attacking midfielder, or a quality defensive midfielder? Or is he a midfield dynamo, box-to-box? I don't think in any regard he excels. He might prove me wrong, but I doubt it.

'Is Cahill fit?' must be the first question every single opposing PL manager asks the week before they play Everton. The bloke's been outstanding for years. If he plays, we're in trouble. We'll have a man in one zone, another in the other zone, and Cahill running amok in between.

As for Rodwell, I like him. He's just a good all-round midfielder who does everything well; the type there used to be before everyone had to be classified as 'attacking' or 'holding' in a midfield role. Barry's a good comparison.I do get Supertom's point though - he's not outstanding at any one thing and I don't think he'll hurt us. Pick the right players in our midfield and we could/should at least match a Rodwell/Phil Neville combo.

Not much wrong with that. It's Cuellar plus one in the centre of defence for me, can't decide whether I'd have Collins or Dunne there.

I'd switch the middle three around so it's NRC on the right of the three, Makoun centre and Delph left, but in terms of personnel, I'd like to see that X1 out there on Saturday.

I'd certainly put money on Cahill scoring from a set piece, if I were a gambling man.

If the defence continues to look like a bunch of arse, I'd be tempted to go three CB's and Walker as wing back.

As good as McGrath was, he benefited from two CB's alongside him in the latter stages of his career. Dunne is playing like someone on his last legs (he was at fault for Macedonia's goal last Saturday and generally looked sluggish) so he could possibly do with the extra assistance. Would help us at set pieces too. Maybe.

What we gain in defensive stability we might lose in forward options, but I think we have enough attacking players to make opportunities - and a player in Bent who should be able to take them. Going too defensively may reduce some of the chances we create, but  ultimately if it covers our biggest problem this season it might be worth the trade off.

Everton v Aston Villa

There has been a lot of rubbish written about a player revolt under manager Gerard Houllier at Villa Park but I would not take too much notice of that. I would suggest that the players revolting are the ones who do not want to stay at the club anyway, regardless of who the manager is.

Villa's league position is a little precarious but Houllier has got enough match-winners in his squad for them to get out of trouble.

The problem for his Everton counterpart David Moyes is that some of his better players, like Louis Saha and Marouane Fellaini, are out for the season. This will be a big examination for the Toffees but they are at home, and they are tough to beat too.

Prediction: 1-1

This whole season is so very strange with results in general. The only thing which has been consistent is we will not keep a clean sheet and probably let a goal in at the end of each half.
Other than that I feel strangely confident. Maybe it's because of the break and time heals?
I do believe we hit rock bottom at Wolves and now we will turn it around.

So on that basis I am going for a staggering, roller coaster match of season type of game and 3 - 2 to us with a very nervy finish.

Unless Houllier has had a personality transplant he will not do this. Stubborn prick

Please no.

Heskey is not a man for a relegation dogfight.

Bent will score as long as Ash and Downing are on song.

Petrov coming in would be beneficial though.

Last time I went to Goodison Park I,d just returned from Angola and was ( unknowingly ) in the early stages of Cereberal Malaria , the following day I was in a Coma and about to shuffle off to that Big Villa Park in the Sky . Forunately I survived and I remember thinking as I lay in my hospital bed that Goodison might well have been the last Football ground I ever saw , an apalling thought to ' shuffle off '  with .  What kept my spirits up though was the re-runs in my brain of fabulous Paul Mersons fabulous  last minute half-volley from 35 yds out that won us the game 0-1 .  I think I,ve got a headache coming on , could be an omen ?!........................................Godzvilla!

We usually get outplayed by Everton but don't lose, see the 2-2, 3-2, 3-3, 2-2, 1-0, we were outplayed in all of those but didn't lose. They're due a bit of luck against us and when you're down there everything goes against you so i'm going for 2-1 to them. Fortunately for us Wigan have got Spurs, West Ham have got Man Utd, Albion have got Liverpool etc so those around us won't be getting much either tomorrow.

Does anyone know if we sold out in the end?

Just finished watching all of GH's pre-match media stuff - he looks like he's found a tenner - big grin - all relaxed - and very positive.

I can only hope that watching England this week he'd decided to have a go at it and play the same three up front.  We've as much chance of staying tight at the back as Katie Price - so why not say - sod it - let's outscore them.

Least, that's what I'm hoping his smile said...

Plays Young in the Hole
Fridel stays on his line
Brings on Gabby to play left wing
Brings on Pires to waddle about in midfield
Downing jumps out of a tackle
Young takes all the free kicks
Gives heskey a run out to lumber around up front
usual defensive system for corners and free kicks

feeling really confident

Have just got in so forgive me if I'm going over old ground. All we've heard since Christmas in the press are totally positive managerial statements about the unity, the determination and the fact that we will win trophies at sometime in the future. This is against a background of poor results with one or two exceptions and apparent turmoil in the background. So tomorrow the chips are down. No messing about now. Without doubt we could easily be relegated. A bad set of results tomorrow could put us in the bottom three I should think. That means tomorrow we need a good performance at Goodison from a team playing the right players in their right positions. C'mon you Villa Boys UTV

For the more seasoned (ie old) Villa Boys amongst you, I can remember going to watch Villa play Everton at VP in the mid-Sixties when we more or less needed a win to stay up. A young Everton boy called Jimmy Husband tore us to pieces and Fred Pickering got a hat trick I think. Final Score 4-something (maybe 2) to Everton. I remember I was stood by the players tunnel and at half time our centre half, John Sleeuwenhoek looked absolutely knackered. He had been run ragged. We lost the next game 6 nil away to Southampton at The Dell and went down. That's just a bad memory though !

If we don't at least get a point with the team Everton will have to put out then we are going down.

Saha, Yak, Vaughan all out, only Beckford is available who can play up front.

Arteta, Fellaini both definitely out, Cahill and Rodwell both likely to be out, they sold Pienaar, so no midfield either.

Hopefully, the Internationals will have brought back some confidence to our team.

I hope we go 4-3-3 and go after them; unfortunately, our manager has probably already packed his white flag.

Erm......  What if the teams below us don't win their games?  Why are we going down if we don't beat Everton when we are not even in the relegation zone and there are 7 more games?  1 game is just 1 game, how many times have we lost games that we were expecting to win and then won games we thought we wouldn't?  Did you think we'd beat Man City after we lost at home to Sunderland?  I agree with the sentiment but fuckin hell, we might lose 5-0 today and then beat Newcastle and go on a run that could see us finish in the top half.  Nothing will be decided today, either way.

Was it before the West Brom game that the players had a secret meeting and decided to go out on the pitch and put things right?

I'm hoping that the senior players get together aagain and resolve to play their hearts out to stay up in the remaining games. The players know we can beat Everton. They are good enough and should go out looking for the three points. Hearts and heads up. Lets stay in this league.

1-2 Villa. Bent and Young. UTV always.

I work with a couple of Everton fans and they actually think we'll beat them. Can't see it myself, think a 1-1 draw is the most likely outcome, but I'll be ecstatic with 3 points if we get them. Running out of games now, so the sooner we can get points on the board the less pressure there'll be when it comes to the crunch.

I'll admit I've never been to the crunch. Not even on a day trip!

They're due a bit of luck against us and when you're down there everything goes against you so i'm going for 2-1 to them. Fortunately for us Wigan have got Spurs, West Ham have got Man Utd, Albion have got Liverpool etc so those around us won't be getting much either tom
