Draw takes place live on ITV at 16:10 on Sunday 30th January 2010.

I'd prefer not to have Crawley 'cos everyone will want them to win and we'll have a week leading up to the game of some postman saying how he's going to 'deliver' victory against us, and somehow we'll conspire to put in a shite performance. Any lower league/mediocre PL side at home will do me.

5th round Saturday traditionally a day of rest for Villa fans now two in two seasons.

I'd say we've played our easy draw cards early this year - Arsenal or Man U away.

Its obvious we'll get Blues at home, and we will stuff them 3-0.
That or Manure away.
If we get an easy home tie and Spuds/Arse/manure/Chelski draw each other, the cup is as good as ours.

Knuckle Draggers are home pls.

They got very lucky in the CC QF and we really should of won, likewise in the derby a couple of weeks ago. We've got to put it right and teach those neanderthals a lesson. They know we're a different team now and we'd batter them easily.

Part of me wants us to play them, and to batter the fuckers, and I mean fucking humiliate them by 5 or 6, to show them their rightful place.
However, the thought of losing to them twice in cups in the same season (the luck these fuckers are having, it would be possible) makes me wary. So i'll settle for one of Brighton/Leyton O/Sheff Wed/Crawley at home.

Pretty much agree with all of this.  I wouldn't mind any of the lower league teams away, Brighton is a good night out as is Sheffield and Nottingham so any of those would do me.  Prefer a piss easy home tie though.  Please not Blues away.

To be honest, I still don't think we can entirely rule it out.

In fact, I think we should just break away with them and start our own cup competition.  The Aston Rovers Trophy (ART) could be held annually with rounds 3 to 6 being at Villa Park and the Semi to be staged over 2 legs home and away.  It'd be brilliant, no nervous cup draws by 2nd rate celebrities with Jim Rosenthal chatting inanely in the background.  No need for any media to get involved as history dictates that cameras are seemingly banned from Villa Blackburn cup games.  We would be hot favourites every year and we would be guaranteed not to draw Man U.   ;)

I have just done the draw using a random number generator on www.random.org. This is how it looks. We shall see how  the FA  manage with their balls in the microwave/balls in the freezer technique.

Just in case you are a bit thick, the following is NOT, REPEAT NOT the official draw.

02 Brighton & Hove Albion vs 11 Wolverhampton Wanderers or Stoke City
08 Leyton Orientvs 12 Notts County or Manchester City
09 Burnleyvs 03 Bolton Wanderers or Wigan Athletic
04 Arsenalvs 05 West Ham United or Nottingham Forest
14 Aston Villavs 13 Reading
16 Sheffield Wednesdayvs 05 Fulham or Tottenham Hotspur
01 Crawley Townvs 10 Small Heath Alliance
07 Manchester Unitedvs 06 Everton or Chelsea

it wouldn't. That's already been agreed as part of the terms of the loan. With shorter loans it's usually written in that the player can't play against his club, but often with loans to the end of a season they waive that. Let's just hope we've stated that he can't play against us.

The draw hasn't been favourable. I'd have loved Crawley at home. But the cup over the years has been full of underdogs beating favourites. None of those teams that have caused surprises would ever have won had they not believed in themselves. We're a PL football club going to another PL football club. It's going to be bloody hard, but we have every chance of getting a result there.

BREAKING INJURY NEWS
Man City's England winger Adam Johnson will be out for three months with ankle ligament damage. Johnson didn't play for City against Notts County today - he was injured in training in midweek.

At least he can't play, he was their best player when he came on last week at VP.

Just need Hart, Tevez, Kolarov, Dzeko etc to follow suit.

If it is City, we shouldn't be going there with the defeatist attitude some on here seem to be showing. We've beaten them this season already and although they gave us a hiding at their place in December, we're a different team to then (and so are they).

Just like it was random draw when we should of played Middlesboro instead of United 3 years ago because the person drawing the balls couldn't read?

I'm sorry, they've got very very lucky with cup draws. It's sad they get rewarded for being Birmingham City. It can't be random if they get easy draws at home all the time.

How crap was ITVs coverage of the draw??!
At the start they picked out "significant" numbers, and used that word.. so what.. does that make the rest of the teams involved insignificant? They showed their "significant" 5 numbers in a graphic which could so easily have had all 16 numbers on it, but opted for a big blank empty area under their 5 "significant" teams.

Then as the draw progressed, they listed 10 numbers on the side with a picture of the FA Cup next to them. They could so easily have listed all 16 teams if they didnt have the cup pictured (which was also on the other side). As the teams were drawn out that were on display, the area went blank when they could have replaced them with other teams that werent on the screen.

I just dont get how pathetic it was, it felt like they had no time to prepare and put together a presentation in 5 minutes.

In 97 didn't Boro lose two cup finals and get relegated? Would it be more painful for them if they did rather than just get relegated? If they get shafted in both it might be enjoyable.

Especially if the FA Cup one is by us. Come on people! Where is the optimism? Why can it be Blues' year but not ours? We are solid at the back, getting better in midfield and up front we'll get goals from.... Somewhere.

This is the point, actually. Our biggest problem against sides like City has been panicking and not keeping the ball. With some real quality and mental as well as physical toughness in the midfield, we should give ourselves more of a chance.

If they get to the FA Cup Final they will probably get in Europe, meaning we would have to finish sixth to have any chance of losing to Rapid Vienna next year.

Quite apart from the fact that it's one of the worst draws we could have got, it'll mean another midweek evening trip and the associated travel problems. County's website confirms the reply date as 5th Round weekend.

Not exactly the greatest draw we could have had, but at the same time, if you want to win a cup you have to expect some tough draws.

Fuck it, we can beat them. We can beat anyone, we're Aston Villa.

It can't be random if they get easy draws at home all the time.

So what you are saying is that for some surreal and unfathomable reason the FA and The Football League have conspired with a host of "celebrities" to award Birmingham City with easy home draws in this year's cup competitions?

Any particular reason why the Knuckle Draggers ALWAYS get easy teams at HOME?

It is beyond ridiculous how lucky they're in draws. Why do neanderthals who play hoofball get rewarded?
Because it's a random draw?
Just like it was random draw when we should of played Middlesboro instead of United 3 years ago because the person drawing the balls couldn't read?
Which didn't actually happen.

I'm sorry, they've got very very lucky with cup draws. It's sad they get rewarded for being Birmingham City. It can't be random if they get easy draws at home all the time.

speaking of luck of the draw, I bet many Fulham fans playing Spurs at home thought they could have been luckier and got lower league opposition. Right now their tearing Spurs, who have every bit as impressive as Man City this season a brand new one. This could be any score as they've just hit the bar.

Having watched Notts County-Citeh this afternoon, I'd actually be pleased in the first instance to avoid going to Meadow Lane.

If it is a trip to Eastlands, let's give it a crack.  Last weekend showed that with a "We Will Prevail" attitude on the pitch - and a bit of luck, we can compete against them.

Indeed. The main issue with this piss-poor conspiracy theory is that Middlesbrough's number 25 ball was then brought out later in the draw.

Unless Mr Situation 'rly' thinks that they put two numbers 25s in the bowl just to mean a higher chance of the tedium of yet another Villa vs. Man Utd FA Cup game. And why would they do that?

Fulham or Tottenham v Bolton or Wigan

Man Utd v Crawley

Everton or Chelsea v Reading

Leyton Orient v Arsenal

Birmingham City v Sheff Wed

Stoke City v Brighton

Notts County or Man City v Aston Villa

West Ham v Burnley

West Ham Blues Stoke and the top 5 left in then.
This must be one of the quickest predictions to go spectacularly wrong.

Sooner or later you have to play the top teams if you want to win it. For as long as I can remember the moment we have drawn a Liverpool, Utd, Arsenal etc, we've gone out and that's why I've never seen us win the thing.

One year we have to break that before I leave this mortal coil.

Not great to be honest as our record at Eastlands shows

Played 9
Won  1
Drawn 0
Lost 8 (7 league, 1 FA Cup)
For 6
Against 21

You'll forgive me if I'm ever so slightly pessimistic.

Imagine the atmosphere at Crawley. One hand the excitement, something to tell the kids and on the other -a mauling. Fantastic I love the Cup.

As for us , well we would have preferred a home draw but I reckon we can do this lot even without Bent. That's of course if Man City win I don't fancy Meadow Lane. Fun in the seventies though.

As for Knuckle dusters. I couldn't give a flying Malawian fart. What exactly is lucky about them. They are cursed I tell you. Doomed.         Doomed.

Having read the posts under the title "5th round draw" on a couple of Man City forums I can tell you that "fuck" we just drew Villa is not the response.  More like "yes Villa at home" and "Get in".  They are pissed off at Man U getting Crawley and we can all empathise with that.  I appreciate your optimism, I really do but our record aginst Premier League teams is AWFUL in this competition.  In fact, other than Blackburn, who have we beaten from the top flight in the last 10 years?

EDIT:  Never mind our record in Manchester.

I am with Hawkeye. Man City are actually not very good atm whatever their results. They look confused. They are a bit like Spuds, losing 4-0 at the moment to Fulham and anything can happen. Expectations are very high there. Not ours.

I am unopologetic at being a GH "sack him" and I and others had good reason.

However, there is a new spirit, our youngsters are impressive, our reserves are impressive and GH appears to have won over the core of the first team. I still give RL a lot of the credit mind but yes I am confident.

Barry can go to waste but by G we miss Milner. We will give them a good fight on current form.

The last time we beat a "big" team in the FA Cup was in the third round in 2001 when we beat Newcastle after a replay.

Newcastle 2001 (after a replay)
Leeds and Everton 2000
Tottenham 1992
Arsenal 1974

They're our only wins against "big" clubs in the last 40 seasons.

I didn't bother looking back any further - it was too depressing.

and it's better to play  a tie like this now rather than later in the Cup. Last years  we had  very kind draws   and than got thumped in the Semi. That was not much fun. We are not the sort of Club who should be happy to just go to Wembley.  We need to face  up to the mammoth and eat it!

Tokyo - I was agreering with you. They Were a 'big team'. But looked what happened to them and to Nottingham Forest for example.

Man U were a Big Team with Best, Law, Charlton, Kidd et al and we beat them when in Division three. In a semi final.

There is something about Man City that just does not fit. I do not see them as being long term. Even with all that cash. Good players are being overlooked and losing confidence and direction. We have to look no further that Milner for that. And Arsenal have won nothing with fantastic players.

There is a core, an in built strength to Aston Villa at the moment built upon many years of  investment in Youth and reserves. It just might be our time. They trained, fought and learned with the badge, were not bought.

I thought GH was destroying that which is why I was against him. Now it appears he has actually respected our back up plan, our depth, embraced it even.

If he can contnue to garner the support of RL, the Board and the players we can be as good as any.

I still think that this squad will beat Manchester City at Middle Eastlands.

Whatever our recent history against so called 'big Clubs'.

Fuck me. We're not c***ing Wigan! We are a big club. Not a Man United or an Arsenal but in the next tier down. We should look to matches against everyone in terms of giving them a damn good game. Man City last Saturday, the draw earlier this season and the win last against Man United, the second half against Arsenal...

To read some of the comments on this thread you would think we were Crawley Town looking forward to a trip at Man United. Dear me.

We as others have said we (as a relatively big club) need to face down the big boys and beat them. We CAN do that so I don't understand this defeatist nonsense. I'm not sure if we will beat Man City SHOULD WE HAVE TO FACE THEM but I'm not certain we will get beaten. We have in recent years tended not to face these clubs only because we have been on the end of a shock from a Leicester or QPR.

At last.  When will we recognise that we are a Big Club. Our expectations are high and that is why we get frustrated. Yes, I know we have won little (European Cup against Bayern apart)  for ninety years. One FA Cup, a few League Cups, but compare with some others who have that claim. Newcastle, Man City, Everton, Spurs, Wolves, Aresenal, Blues for G sake?

Big Stadium, special stadium, comparatively big crowds. A history that includes founding this and every league around the World. England bowed to Hitler in the late thirties. Villa refused to give the salute.

Everything in football world wide is based an idea from Aston Villa.

Big? With respect to a thousand debates. Who is bigger?

Oh dear. What have I done?

Both those ties were in the Carling Cup and not the FA Cup as were the debacles at Burnley and Doncaster.  We have, in recent years , only been knocked out of the FA Cup by Premier League sides other than Sheff Utd a few years ago.  I read that we had lost 9 out of the last 10 ties against top flight opposition, the one we had won was Blackburn last year.  That is now 9 from 11 with Rovers being the beaten side again.   So, in conclusion, we do play these sides in this competition and they almost always put us out.  Still, we have hope.

It's been posted before but always worth a repeat.

p.s. happy that we can beat Citeh if they get through, knowing us though County might need a replay.

Bad draw but hopefully some decent ticket prices and we'll take a few thousand to roar the lads on.  Anyone know what our allocation could be here?

We owe them from when they knocked us out under DOL (after a replay at Eastlands).

I reckon if it's City we have to play, it'll be on Wednesday 2nd March. ( prob the same date if Notts pull it off in the replay, due to ticket sales).

City's midweek fixtures after Notts Co. on 19/20th Feb are,
Thurs 24/2 Aris, home, Europa
Wed 2/3 no game
Thurs 10/3 Europa (if they beat Aris)
Thurs 17/3 Europa ("   "      "       ").

If we drew at COMS, then the replay would have to be on Sunday 13th March, the weekend of the sixth round.

We should get at have to get 15% so that should be about 7200 as Eastlands holds 47,700

Why does wanting the easiest possible draw equate to doubts about our status in the game, or the need for some to reaffirm that status with history lessons?

History lessons are just that - history. The big clubs -the truly big clubs- target what they are going to win next. We've gone far too long without reclaiming the FA Cup, draws like today and soft draws for Man United are not exactly unique in recent years.

FWIW, if Citeh beat us up there I don't think they'll go on to win the thing either. They just don't have winning in their DNA.

We owe them for so many defeats, the 5th round tie in 2006 in particular.  IIRC Micah Richards equalised in the 94th minute from a corner and he swore in the post match interview.  Then, in the replay we were 2 down until the 85th minute or so and Steven Davies pulled one back.  City got a home draw with West Ham in the QF and lost.  I remember being so pissed off cos we threw away the chance of a last 8 match at home to that lot.  West Ham got to the final and lost Liverpool.  Yep, we owe them.

It's probably because of all of those times we played Man United in the third round and invariably lost. Regarding this one, Man City aren't invincible, as we proved the other day. We've also got to beat the top teams to win the trophy, so might as well get them out of the way sooner rather than later!

I got quite annoyed at the journo covering our game for the NOTW yesterday. He was sniping about the attendance.

Now it wasn' great but we only got 2000 less than Everton v Chelsea and there was minimal travelling support.

The key though was that we were playing Blackburn for the eighth time in 18 months.

On the draw, I said to the wife before it happened that I fancied it to be Man Citeh away.

Not quite true if we are talking about the FA Cup game of the 90s.  The 3rd round game scheduled for a sunday at meadow Lane was called off so we played the game on a midweek evening, which was 0-0...and was truly shocking.  We won the replay but lost at The Baseball Ground in the 4th round. I seem to remember playing Notts County in the FA Cup 83'ish at their place and us beating them 6 - 1 I think, the only reason i remember is that, is because as I walked up the steps at the back of there ground we scored!!!

But i was also there the day we lost 4-0 to them in a league game (may have been the same season) and I think it was Withe who got sent off, and I am sure Blue Nose Hopkins played for us and Barton dropped Morley.

Villa's FA Cup fifth round clash against the winners of either Manchester City or Notts County looks set to take place on Tuesday March 1 or Tuesday March 2.

The forthcoming international fixtures and Manchester City's involvement in the Europa League means the two sides are unable to play their fourth round replay until the weekend of February 19 and 20.

Therefore Villa's away trip to face the winners of that tie is set to be played on the week of the fifth round replays - March 1 or 2.
