Title: Project Anthem
Post by: AVFC-Tom on January 24, 2011, 06:54:24 PM
Good evening fellow Villa fans.

I come from another AVFC forum (VillaTalk) and over there we have started to try and create/find a new club anthem.

Not a much better time than now given our situation to have such an anthem, yet we don't seem to have one other than mindless chanting about how Blues should be listening.

The General has said he would back the idea and so that has gave us even more of a boost to get this going. Would make the pre-kick off atmosphere electric.

There are have been many suggestions on VillaTalk, most popular being:

Ghost Riders:

Stand by me (my personal fave):

Here is the link to the discussion on VillaTalk: http://www.villatalk.com/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=66659&postdays=0&postorder=asc

So i come here to ask you to discuss what you think would be a good anthem and in the future vote on it and add all the votes from the different websites together, including a facebook poll, then head to the General, who has said he would be fully behind the idea. Then hopefully he will take it further and it will get into all 4 stands and the end product will be outstanding.

Tom,
UTV.

Don't think the club will get behind a song with three verses about killing Blues fans.

Not our version:

Was walking down the Witton Lane one dark and dusky day,
I spied a poor City fan a-running far away,
I said to that poor City fan "It's time for you to die,
Cuz you have seen the glory of...Holte Enders in the sky.

He ran down the terraces and fell towards the gate,
Little did he know that death was sure to be his fate,
He had one more short hour to live and then he'd hear the cry,
That every City fan does fear..Holte Enders in the sky.

Their fists were just like granite and their pockets lined with lead,
And if they catch a City fan he's sure to end up dead,
Cuz Villa fans rule Birmingham and City fans know why
cuz they have seen the glory of...Holte Enders in the sky.

The thing that bugs me about Ghostriders is that it's a real loose connection between the Cash song and what is sung on the terraces, the tune is barely recognisable.  I can't be the only one that thinks that, surely?

I assumed it had no basis on the Cash version and was based on an earlier recording (Cash's wasn't until 1979 according to Wikipedia).

How long has it been sung at Villa Park for?

Reading through the thread on VT, bits about adding atmosphere before the game kicks off, aswell as having an anthem. An idea for scaring the shit out of the opposition.

If scaring the opposition is the aim, then go with "Godlike" by KMFDM. It'll scare em and deafen em at the same time

thanks for the feedback, so i take it you guys are behind it? i think it would be great if we could get a mass poll going in about 3 or 4 days time after people have discussed choices. slowish, powerful songs with lyrics which don't relate at all.

I'm with you on this.  The tune sung on the terraces sounds nothing like the Cash song.  I know the tune is viewed as a classic for the Villa fan of a certain vintage but I just can't quite feel its anthemic qualities.

Something along the lines of "Jerusalem" would be good.  An ideal anthem would be stirring, hairs on the back of the neck tingling, mood-lifting and performance enhancing.  And it would have to reflect the class of the club. "The Bells Are Ringing", when sung by everyone, has a lot of these qualities.

I often wonder if Nigel Kennedy would be prepared to record Elgar's "Nimrod" for us to play as the teams come out...for me, that would be pure Aston Villa.

A few years ago I was discussing this with at a mate's house, and we agreed that many of the most memorable football anthems have a hint of melancholy about them; they are songs of following regardless of circumstances. Think, You'll Never Walk Alone, I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles, and, dare I say it, Keep Right On.

Anyway, on telly at the moment was the Andrew Lloyd-Webber finds a new Joseph talent show.  It maybe because we'd had a few, but we agreed that the chorus of Any Dream Will Do would make a good football anthem...

May I return to the beginning
The light is dimming, and the dream is too
The world and I, we are still waiting
Still hesitating
Any dream will do

Totally behind it, just what we need as the holte has been a bit below par of late. please see above and copy/paste on VT for me! all these old songs are fine but not everyone is over 50, the new generation need to relate too....

Mull of Kintyre? Dear Me... that's going to have the opposition crapping their pants isn't it!
Besides, that's a Charlton "anthem" isn't.... and shite too.

I love Ghostriders... but it's sang too fast nowadays and is not the same.

As for anything scaring the oppo - is there really a Premier Lge player whose going to be put off be some singing.. maybe the odd mascot might be a tad tearful, but a player?
If the idea is to put off the opposition how about we all take an empty crisp packet and pop them together.

Rodgers & Hammerstein were from neither Liverpool nor Manchester and Tom Jones wasn't from Stoke.

I don't think it really matters where the writer/singer is from.

As I said I love Ghostriders, but that, nor any other "anthem' is going to scare the oppo. I've never been to a ground and been scared by someone's anthem, and can't imagine a player ever has.

Not exactly an anthem but I also used to like the old one where we all put our hands in the air and just went "Woooaaahh" (or however you might write that, sounds crap written down!) for ages - remember doing for almost the entire half in the Smethwick End once, and  occasionally it broke into "Villa, Villa, Villa" before back to the humm which started quiet a got louder, and louder on and off.

I think for the fans to sing.....'The Bells are Ringing' should definitely be our anthem. Sung really really slowly.

Would be fantastic if it could be started as the players come out of the tunnel by the sound of church bells actually ringing....with the crowd then taking over the singing.

The only way we are going to get an anthem going that everyone can agree on is to follow the following simple three step strategy...

(i) reach FA Cup Final
(ii) release incredibly brilliant, catchy and easy to remember Cup Final song.
(iii) win FA Cup Final.

Shouldn't be too difficult, we always win the Cup when the year ends in '957'.

We'll never get one organised through the club it just won't happen, people will never sing it.  This sort of thing happens in the stands like Dwight Yorke's song for example.  Fans will usually start songs at away games and then it catches on and goes from there trying to orchestrate a song will never take off.

We always used to sing YNWA against United, particularly at OT, just to wind them up (that & the Munich song, tut tut). Sometimes v Everton too, but don't recall ever doing it elsewhere.

4th verse normal with hand claps

Agreed, the club can't do it. You need to get a few hundred people together, who all agree on the song and the words, to go and get pissed together and sing it at games. Over and over, game after game. That's the only way it will catch on. I hope it does.

Don't think the club will get behind a song with three verses about killing Blues fans.

Perhaps we can have two versions... one that is more politically correct.

Should probably go with someone "local", such as Ozzy Osbourne, Led Zeppelin, or Duran Duran.

.....or we could just nick You'll Never Walk Alone...

I watched the '94 League final the other day and heard us singing YNWA when we were 2-0 up, I was there and don't remember us singing that....I was pissed though. A bit embarrassing looking back now.

PS on another note, does anyone knopw the full version of the Carlos Cuellar song??? I'm in the lower Holte and can't work out much of it!

He's 6ft 3 with curly hair CUELLAR! CUELLAR!
He's 6ft 3 with curly hair CUELLAR! CUELLAR!
he's 6ft 3 with curly hair, his teeth are fucked but we don't care
CARLOS CUELLAR, VILLA'S CENTRE HALF
BOUNCE! nananananana CUELLAR! CUELLAR! nananananananananananana CUELLAR! CUELLAR
he's 6ft 3 with curly hair, his teeth are fucked but we don't care
CARLOS CUELLAR, VILLA'S CENTRE HALF

I think its actually

He's the rock in our back four Cuellar Cuellar

Just quoting the one away at...Reading I think it was, Carling Cup Quarters possibly?

Maybe a song could be worked from Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama".
Something along the lines of: Sweet Home Aston Villa, Where the Sky's Claret and Blue.  In the original there's even a line, "in Birmingham we love the Governor", which could be adapted.

I'm surprised the popular 1970's ditty, "Oh Andy, your the greatest, the Holte End say" (to tune of sailing), has not been adapted to "Oh Randy, your the greatest".

My favourite however is The Bells are Ringing".

Son you are a Villa fan and that the way you'll stay
Always to be a Villa fanb until your dying day"

Otherwise traditionally...Bells are Ringing...it sticks out for me as a kid when the bells did chime once at the Church just before kick off...the PA could always pump out some bell chimes!

They're always there high in the skies..
Nagasaki nightmare, Nagasaki nightmare
Pretty as a picture in the generals' eyes
Nagasaki nightmare, Nagasaki nightmare
They've done it once, they'll do it again
They'll shower us all in their deadly rain

Nagasaki nightmare, Nagasaki nightmare

Start with the opening from Shaved Women and it'll put the wind up the opposition for sure :)

Surprised no one's mentioned one of the grandest anthems of late-twentieth century pop:
Thunderclap Newman's "Something in the Air". This has majesty, power, inspiration and it's about breaking through/winning.  (Suitably adapted):

"Call out the Villa players
Because there's something in the air
We've got to get together sooner or later
 'Cos the revolution's here
And you know that it's right...
And you know that it's right...

We have got to win it together...
We have got to win it together... Now!"

(Perhaps 'Randy Lerner' could be substituted for 'revolution' by our more conservative fans...)

The trouble with 'the bells are ringing' is that i've already seen two (possibly even 3) variations posted across the threads.

If we do adopt an anthem, it should be with thw origin words in my opinion. No changing them to cheesy lyrics.

That said, Holte Enders in the sky can stay. Well, the chorus anyway.

Bring me sunshine on matchday
Let the Villa win away
In this ground where we play there should be more happiness
So much joy when we win, 3 more points tomorrow.

You’ve made me happy through the years,
Always given me so many tears
Let your skills be as good as the god from up above
Bring me goals, bring me titles, bring me love.
Bring me sunshine when you play
Let all the bad days go away
Life’s too short to be spent not winning anything
We can be so content if we won the league tomorrow
Be strong hearted all day long,
Keep on singing happy songs
Let your wins be as warm as the sun from up above
Bring me goals, bring me titles, bring me love!

I do remember Dirty Old Town being sung in the Holte, around mid to late 80's?
It has that melancholy air, it doesn't mention Villa, but the lyrics just seem to match, references to gas works, old canal etc.
Plus it did seem to catch on well, i am sure it was written about Salford and the Manchester ship canal, but it just sums up Birmingham for me, a no nonsense industrial city that no one loves.
Anyway The Bells are Ringing is great when belted out, that gets my vote.

Trouble with the bells are ringing is the lyrics are so lame.

Likewise any suggestions for songs where you try to shoe horn in Villa specific lyrics generally sounds crap.

It doesnt have to be an obvious anthemic song - Celtic fans singing that Depeche Mode song sounds really good. Like Sheff Utds version of Annies Song. The best songs emerge from the fans not from the club.

Depends if you just want an anthem or something the fans can sing. War Pigs would be a great anthem but not particularly terrace friendly.

If I can throw one in the mix - Knights in White Satin.

Trouble is with this thread that people have got confused between the song they want to sing and the one they want the team to come out to. Personally, when it comes to the music as the team emerge from the tunnel, I think it's been shite for years. At one stage we were coming out to the fucking Black Eyed Peas. To me, that just suggests 'Hi, we're Aston Villa, we're all bouncy and friendly and we'd like you to have three points.'

I wouldn't suggest this as coming out music but we used to play Oasis's 'Shock of the Lightning' just before the match and that's a decent track to get people going. What about 'Fucking In The Bushes' by the same band? It's an instrumental, plus it has a connotation for some as being the music used in the climactic scenes of 'Snatch'. But in an ideal world, it would be the fans that sang the teams onto the pitch. Can't ever see it happening though.

Claret and blue (chanted)
Claret and blue (chanted)
The fans are waiting for the claret and blue
Claret and blue (chanted)
Claret and blue (chanted)
And some day, we`re gonna score a little goal or two, or three or four or more
For Villa, and the claret and blue
Claret and blue (chanted)
Claret and blue (chanted)

Sung in the same way as the West Ham soundtrack version (
) it could be a winner...

I like the first verse from back in the day, 2nd verse is a bit shit.

Plus West Ham were singing their version as far back as 1975 which I think may be before us.

Anyway who needs an anthem just a decent game of football would do me

Yes, let's go for swathes of blue seats, "fuck-off [insert scapegoat here]", audible groaning, "[player's name here] you thick ******", Birmingham are you listening?, chips and curry sauce after 20 minutes of play, and 'beat the traffic' on the stroke of 4:40. Or we could call in Brigada 1874 to do a dance routine.

Think the whole thing is a really good idea, and as other posters have said we (the fans) need to carry on where we left off at Goodison on Saturday; easier said that done as there'll always be some idiots booing if it doesn't go our way in the early stages of the game.

If anyone comes on the PA and says, right we want you all to clap your hands, wave your scarves and singalong to this I'm heading straight for the exit. It's almost as embarrassing as being given a plastic flag to wave when you come through the turnstile.

Artificial atmospheres are for people who wear jesters hats in their team colours and miss the ten minutes either side of half time so they can fill their faces with £5's worth of burger and chips.

I recall it being sung when we beat Spurs away 2-0 the season when we were runners-up under Sir Graham Taylor.  It just kept going, the "best in the land" lines getting louder and louder, faster and faster.  Genuinely, it was superb.  What better way to lift the team than by telling them they're the best bar none?  White Hart Lane was silent and this song just kept rolling out.  Stirring stuff.

The Bells has lots of Villa tradition, you sound like the noses over on Small Heath Alliance who think we've just plucked this song from nowhere and that we've stole it from West Ham. They're not the brightest that lot.

Whatever we sing, I hope that the ground is a cauldron of noise on Sunday.

Agree, we really need to put a bit of fear into the opposition on Sunday.

Also just a quick word about the fans up at Goodison, who i thought were fantastic. I think they spurred the players on.

My main worry is if the team go behind and things turn nasty like against Wolves, at Everton the fans didn't stop singing even when they went 1-0 down, Darren Bent said it really spurred the team on.Saying that we can't possibly be as abject as we were against Wolves ,I think they'll be well up for it

Remember it being belted out at Norwich all through the game (night match, League Cup Quarter Final mid 80's) loads of Villa there - a great night.

My favourite rendition too. I went a couple of weeks earlier for an FA Cup replay, hardly any Villa there, and was telling Norwich fans that in a couple of weeks we''ll be back like we own the place. They scoffed but I was right. Great support the second time.

Sorry to be a killjoy but I just don't see the point in a club anthem.  It smacks of American style cheese and will most likely have absolutely no tradition or historical attachment to the club whatsoever.

You couldn't be more wrong.

Going back to page one of this thread, which is where I started reading it, the song "just can't get enough" was mentioned.  I skipped to reply without seeing the bells are ringing posts.  Now that does have tradition but some of the other stuff definitely does not.

Yes, the only internet nerds there were Fear, myself and Willie Anderson (wink). In my case, and for most others who turned up I think, it was organised by text message with no knowledge of Fear's involvement. But I suppose they had to interview somebody.

The song Brigada have been singing to 'Just can't get enough' is class, IMO.

The Bells Are Ringing is your best bit, I reckon.
I like the idea of Brigada but there far too close to celtic in my opinion, green brigade and brigada are close together, and the i can't get enough is from celtic. Also if you look at their site, it's got more celtic on there than Villa...

Just got an e-mail from Aston Villa telling me about the Be the 12th man campaign.  The Bells Are Ringing will be playing when the players come out on Sunday.  There will also be a special program to go along with this.

Just for good measure they also give a warning about the travel disruptions on Sunday.  Not bad.

The Ajax song is good, but it's their thing. And all they are doing is singing a well-known song. We too can sing a [formerly] well-known song called the Bells are Ringing and what's more, it's got special Villa lyrics.

I also think the Bells are Ringing is livelier than Three Little Birds. Those who say it's an oldie, well so is Kumbaya My Lord and everyone sings that.

So, we had fucking well better hear a rip-roaring rendition of TBAR and WYS on Sunday after all this effort.

Row erupts over Aston Villa terrace anthem [with video]

A WAR of words has erupted over what song should be played when Aston Villa take to the field at home matches.

Villa fan Renford Williams claimed he wrote his own track, called Lion Hearts, two years ago under the impression it would be adopted by the club as its official anthem.

The father-of-five, from Chelmsley Wood, said he was heartbroken when he read in the Birmingham Mail how fans had recorded a new version of The Bells Are Ringing to be played as the teams emerge from the tunnel.

He said: “I’m really uptight about it because that’s what I was hoping would happen with my anthem. It had the backing of Aston FM which is why I thought it had gone to the club and would be seen as an anthem.

“I’ve heard The Bells Are Ringing and it’s more of a chant than a song.”

Mr Williams, a 53-year-old forklift truck repairer, claims his track has received more than 100,000 hits on YouTube and has been broadcast on Aston FM, BBC WM and Gold.

While the club has authorised the use of The Bells Are Ringing inside Villa Park, the idea and the physical recording of the track was spearheaded by fans.

Jonathan Fear, editor of the Vital Villa internet forum, said: “I put out the suggestion of an anthem two years ago and the one that came up time and time again was The Bells Are Ringing.

“There will be people who don’t like it but there’s lots of fans that want a better atmosphere at Villa Park.”

A Villa spokesman said the club did not have an official anthem and that it was down to the fans to adopt one.

The spokesman added: “At the end of the day, the club can’t impose an anthem it has to be something that comes from the terraces and the fans.

“That’s what has happened with The Bells Are Ringing.

“Whether it is adopted as an official anthem is up to the fans.”

I sort of expected The Undertaker to stroll out in the video listening to the first half of that.

I'm not sure what to think about this. There isn't enough of the 'proper' song played to guide people who don't know it already. The chap sings a weird harmonised version which I think would sound great over a big enough crowd singing the actual version. Hm. Maybe.

It should have stopped with the fantastically fun video on the steps of the Holte End. The club have clearly been kind enough to pour some time, energy and funds into promoting the Bells are Ringing, but whoever thought they could make a "professional" version just does not "get" football fans and what it's all about.

Yes I was rather hoping for more of the jolly uplifting peals like the ones at the end but we got the funereal tolling all the way through.

And I agree with other posters that he sings the words very clearly but that it would have helped if he'd gone nearer the actual melody as well.

Think the guy has a good voice, though.

And if it works...that's what everybody's been working to achieve.  It's not the way I would have done it but at least it's there!

I quite like the doom metal bell at the start, I'd like it more on a doom metal album though.  As for the bulk of it, it's kiddy metal/Eighties hair metal.  Whatever else you might say about it, it's certainly unexpected..............................

It's a start. It might actually work in front of forty odd thousand, too.  Definitely not what I was expecting, though.

After a few beers and a bit of adrenaline, those bells in the intro just might take on a life of their own...if the whole thing gets the crowd to join together and sing the chant then it will be a case of job done.  It just could work.  (Fingers crossed!!)  If not, simply keep the bells, fade out the vocals and let the crowd take over.

That new version is gobsmackingly fucking terrible.

I know they're trying to do the right thing, as they see it, but I can't help thinking that having what sounds like Mister Mister doing a cover of a thirty year old chant is only going to achieve exactly the opposite. How very, very embarassing.

And while I'm moaning, I know we're not supposed to say this, and I loved singing the song in the 80s, would love to see it coming back, and appreciate the good intentions of all involved, but I also find that singalong on the Holte steps pretty cringeworthy too.

It is one of those things that probably sounds a great idea on paper, but when actually carried out, doesn't pull it off.

Somebody has to find a way of sabotaging the PA system (that bits that still work) by about 3.45 on Sunday.

Failing that - call the game off, give Newcastle the points, and lets all go to West Ham with some of our credibility still in place.

That is shit. The intro was promising but then it turned into some US MOR wank. Fuck me, I hope they don't play it on Sunday, we'll be a laughing stock. I can't think of anything less inspiring than that bilge to be honest. Anyone brave enough to tell the General that it's shit and should be accidentally mislaid and never looked for again?

I'm gutted that it's so fucking shit, and some knobber got paid to come up with that!

Totally agree, it was fine until the singing started. Why can't we have a loud and proud Sabbath type version?

Ouch.

Still, if everyone shouts along then it might sound......not too bad. And if everyone learns the words then they can remove the cheesy vocalist. And then the backing track. And then all of it.

The mix is all wrong. I can understand why they might need to embellish it a bit to okay over the PA but that effort just kills it.

Hopefully someone informs the club how shit that version is andan it doesn't get played on Sunday, they can play the fan version 10 minutes before kick off on the big screens or something.

I'm sure enough people have heard of it for the song to take off anyway, we don't need that.

Agreed, just keep the bells and let the fans take over.

I could only manage to listen to abut 5 seconds of that 'voice' singing before switching it off. How could somebody get something so simple, so wrong.

I've been informed we're not meant to sing along to that version. Apparantly that is going to be played just before or just as the players run out, then when the bells ring at the end the fans are meant to kick in and sing it without the song. Thats what i've been told the plan is for the song tomorrow.

A minute or so before the players come out they should start playing the bell ringing, then as the players come out have that guitar intro and then fade out as the players line up so as the fans can start singing.

The doom-laden bells were sounding at the start of the 2nd half, and were ignored. Then again, with the sound system in the Upper Holte, it might have been feedback....

The single, funerial bell that tolled at the sound of the second half was awful.

The peal of bells at the end sounded great but with several versions of the song doing the rounds I guess that it was always doomed to end in failure.

All that bells nonsense was the worst idea I've seen/heard at Villa Park. It really added to the sense of doom pre-game. Hardly the most uplifting thing that could be played, was it.

As for the videos of people singing "Bells of ringing". Wow, gathering that many people without singing voices together in one place must have taken a lot of work. I know that people put a lot of effort into this, but IMO it was terrible.

Yeah, while not having the historical link, Hi Ho Aston Villa does succeed in having people belt it out at the final whistle if we've just won.

I think I'd just prefer them to re-promote that than tarnish bells are ringing.

They need to trim first 40 seconds of the bells and go straight into the tune, far too long an intro

Needs to be played at 45rpm rather than 33rpm. So slow its enough to send you to sleep. The original version sang by the fans all them years ago is still was favourite chant.

They should get a proper recording done of it, like the Judy Garland version but with edited lyrics. It doesn't need a guitar or to be intimidating, it needs to be something we want to sing along to.

Sorry, if I were a Villa player coming out  to that funereal tolling bell, I'd expect at least the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse to be waiting on the pitch.   Uplifting? It was literally diabolical as in 'go straight to hell (Championship), bring out your dead, the end is nigh!'

Tell me it it was a technical cock-up.  I appreciate the effort that a lot of fans put into the "Bells Are Ringing" (never did hear the actual song), but as someone once said: 'The bells... the bells...!'

The sound of the funereal chiming of the bells was the least appropriate "rouse the crowd" sound I've ever heard at a football match.

The entire thing has been a bit of an embarassment from start to finish.

"The Bells are Ringin'" used to work well as a terrace chant/song without anyone ever needing to ring a bell.
It would still work in the old way but the chances of it returning are now zero thanks to the club's embarrassing interference this time.
If anyone has any future ideas for a song, do us a favour and don't start Facebook campaigns about it or contact the club for their backing - just sing it in the pubs before games and at the ground. If it's any good it'll catch on and spread.

It might surprise a few of you that football grounds had fantastic atmospheres long before Facebook and Twatter.
None more so than Wembley on cup final day when fans used to celebrate by singing their own songs without being drowned out by a PA telling what to sing and when.
And pre-match the community sing-along of "Abide With Me" was joined in by all 100,000 inside the ground. Now they have a professional opera singer singing it in a key that the fans can't sing along properly with it, and is so loud that you can't hear the fans anyway.

All an example of the game being taken away from the fans by marketing people and their like who have no understanding of the habits of football fans. It pisses me off greatly.

At the start of the game they should play the 'do you know why theyre ringing....' bit, then just play the tune without the words for the fans to sing along to. The bells at halftime and at the end should be dropped, it sounded like a wedding at the end and stopped anyone from singing.

I reckon it will get a prolonged airing at West Ham, especially as those wankers stole the song.

Thẹ problem with thẹ bells are ringing is that it is more like a terrace chtant than an anthem. Clubs with easily recognisable anthem have basically copied famous songs, i.e you'll never walk alone, delillah.

I think we should adopt thẹ same strategy and get a famous song that everyone can sing. I like Annie's Song by John Denver, but I think sheffield utd might already sing that. Is there not a famous song from a Birmingham group that is easily recognisable?

That's the one, couldn't think what it was.  At the Youth Cup semi they played the first line over the PA just before the start of each half and the crowd then sang the rest of the song without accompaniment.
Can't recall them doing it for the FA cup match, but probably wasn't listening and there was a lot more noise in Villa end.

The bells were good, in the Lower Holte you couldn't hear anything else after them other than fans singing something different.

Let's not knock it completely, it would be great if we could get something going wouldn't it?  The problem is trying to start one in this day and age, it's tricky and not passed from generation to generation. The Bells are Ringing is an old tune and the only way to really get it going would be to leave the words etc out on seats, play the tune in the background to help folk along and keep on doing it until it becomes ingrained. Or come up with something different. However, Sunday was only the first attempt.
