2-1 Villa

Bent and Makoun.
Yaya Toure for them

Actually, I just wanted to type Bent and Makoun. I don't care who scores as long as we get a result.

1-1 exciting draw.

Downing to score late in front of the Holte and kiss the badge - ending speculation about his move to Liverpool.

Barry to score for them and to kiss the badge - which over the next few days will be re-designed into a wallet, and made out of solid gold.

If we sign Bent and potentially a few others, I think confidence amongst everybody will rocket.

I’m as excited as hell, even Risso’s has cracked a smile! Confidence to be blown back into the players with the new faces and a sell-out Villa Park.

Villa to win.

1-2, Man. City are bloody good away from home.

Bit worried Yaya Toure will dominate the midfield if we play 4-4-2 and Tevez against our centre halfs isn't filling me with confidence.

Pretty sure we'll win at Wigan though.

1-2

A much improved performance after the humiliation at Wastelands and hopefully plenty of positives to take into the Wigan match. Still see us losing though, Citeh are a seriously good side at the mo and the likes Tevez, Silva and Dzeko will have too much for our back four.

Hope I'm proved wrong though!

Damon, you really should be on the stage.  I'm sniggering away like Muttley and the wife asks me what's so funny?

Try explaining to a woman who has no interest in football about a new signing at the Villa and the jumper he was wearing, and he might score a goal in a game that he probably won't be playing in etc, and she looks at me like I'm a mentallist.

Not sure if i've got the hang of this, but based on what's happened in previous league meetings between the sides my new betting prediction spreadsheet says we're going to lose 214-221 (goals include a hat-trick for Gabby, a free kick from Shaun Maloney and David White will score four for them). Ticket sales look extremely healthy.

3-2 Villa in front of a buzzing and packed out Villa Park.

Bent to grab the winner by transforming into a jump jet and blasting their defence to bits, then transforming back to a warrior robot for the tap in and celebrating by diving into a pool of media bitterness and Mackem tears. That's what £24m buys you.

O.K then...

"Theory of value" is a generic term which encompasses all the theories within economics that attempt to explain the exchange value or price of goods and services. Key questions in economic theory include why goods and services are priced as they are, how the value of goods and services comes about, and for normative value theories how to calculate the correct price of goods and services (if such a value exists). Theories of value fall into two main categories:

Intrinsic (objective) theories

see main article: Intrinsic theory of value
Intrinsic theories, as the name implies, hold that the price of goods and services is not a function of subjective judgements.
Subjective theories

see main article: Subjective theory of value
Subjective theories hold that for an object to have economic value (a non-zero price), the object must be useful in satisfying human wants and it must be in limited supply. This is the foundation of the marginalist theory of value. In the context of explaining price, the marginal utility theory is not a normative theory of value.
In either case what are being addressed are general prices, i.e. prices in the aggregate, not a specific price of a specific good or service in a given circumstance. Theories in either class allow for deviations when a particular price is struck in a real-world market transactions, or when a price is set in some price fixing regime.

Anyone else concerned about GED's comments at the press conference yesterday - along the lines of
"Darren has a habit of scoring on his debut, i am not telling Mancini to watch out but........"

wish he had just said the standard line of "He will do well if selected to play"

There will be a hell of a lot of pressure on GED more the spend and Bent to deliver - read this thread and we all seem to instantly think we will turn them over - they are 2nd in the league, have some unbelielable talent and a superb away record. As much as i am as happy as the preverbial dog with several apendages on getting the Bentmaster in currrently i would not think a game against anyone is a certainty - especially Citeh

A hard battling draw (if we are lucky)

I'm not really expecting us to do them. A draw would be a good result. TBH at this point and against a team like them it's about the performance. I just want them to reassure me that we will win the games we are supposed to out of our remaining fixtures. A bit like mon's first post-jan game where we looked infinitaly better than before but lost wouldn't have me flogging myself.

5-1 at half-time, reminiscent of Liverpool in the 70s - commentary team focus on the fact that a 24m player missed a pen (despite scoring from the rebound)

Second half, Friedel gets sent off to end his appearance sequence.  Therefore we sit back and end up not winning much to the delight of the pundits.

Does that mean £15 is a good deal then ???

Maz; It is true that the generic"theory of Value" should be applied but as you stated we as a "Football Club" have to look at the subjective theories of value.

In simple terms we do not have the normal applications of supply and demand nor the appliance of normal  Cost of Goods and accordingly margins applied thereon. I think that the Business in legal and Financial terms can be desscribed as Capital intensive and yet our Capital assets, excluding land and buildings for this debate, are actually our players. In any other business but sport this would of course not be so and it would be a labour intensive business, but there it is.

The players are our " wealth", our asset base and something with which we trade, no different to a supermarket holding stock. Some perishable and some, such as Wine not. In fact you re-sitcker the wine every month. An appreciating asset. Like Albrighton. Young full bodied. ahem

It is a pity that some of our more mature Wines are going off in the bottle. Due in no small measure to the previous Wine Maker paying too much for the vines, for their care, and planting them quite often on the wrong soil/position on the vineyard.

It will apparently take a Frenchman to plant a whole new cultivar.

Well, bloody hell Maz you deserved it. :)

It's easy to get carried away after the fantastic events of yesterday, but the Wastelands mob are still a good team and Tevez can cause any defence problems.  This week's events will give the whole place a lift and there should be a real buzz at the ground come 5.30 Saturday. Can't see either team not scoring - 2-2 with a last minute goal by our Darren.

City have only conceded 9 goals in 11 away games this year, which says a lot about how they set themselves up away from home.

Our defence is going to have to put in a serious performance to get a result here. I think even a battling draw could give us a good lift going into Tuesday's game, where 3 points are a must.

Steady on. We still have to get the ball to Bent and if he can read and predict Heskey's flick ons and so on he could be very useful still. Plus he's been playing well this season.

I think Delfouneso's general play, greater pace and finishing could prove useful as a foil to Bent also.
Who knows, Gabby may just click with him too.
But until the summer and we get a chance to replace him, Heskey should be in contention.

Unfortunately with Petrov and NRC in the midfield, i think it might be a repeat of the game at Wastelands, when we was completely overrun in midfield.

If Makoun/Adam plays then it could be different, and if Delph is fit then the same.

Would be happy with a draw tbh.

Id have Stephen Ireland, Hogg even Downing centrally ahead of Bannan at present. Id also consider bringing Warnock into midfield ahead of him. My preference for this game would be Hogg. Between Albrighton and Young we have enough players who cant tackle in our midfield. If we play 442 - Reo Coker and Petrov will be destroyed.

Ireland is injured and while I see the point re Warnock in midfield, he can't tackle a dinner at left back so no reason why he will find the desire too in the middle. My thinking on Bannan was we have to get Albrighton and Young into the game. Sitting him in with Petrov and Reo Coker at least gives that option, his range of passing is superb and Bent would give him a moving target to hit up front.

Because we've bought a good player for a lot of money and made a lot of journalists previous expert analyisis of Aston Villa totally redundant. I bet they also hate the fact they can't work Randy Learner out and can't get near him for an interview. Funny, they don't seem to grumble much about Abramovich. Scared of concrete boots perhaps.

As for fans of other clubs, the top boys couldn't care less and the rest are envious at the sudden outlay of such significant funds.

Here's hoping for one of those memorable home debuts, in keeping with the Saunders one in 1992 or Dion's in 1998. Petrov and Carbone also made greats starts, and then never quite lived up to that highpoint again (Petrov's was away though, obv).

We need to improve defensively. I might start to share the certainty that some have re avoiding relegation when we string a few clean sheets together. Not sure that will be tomorrow though, Tevez,  Dzeko and the rest look like they have enough in the locker to at least score 1.

3-1 Villa  (Bent 2)

Despite all this new found optimisim, I still don't fancy our chances in this one.
Would happily take a draw and hope for 3 points v Wigan.

Fancy bent to score in this one, perhaps even first but us still to lose as the way this season turning out i am starting to fancy them to win the title which makes me very sad.For us though I see europe as a real target for which I thank you Randy.

Is Makoun  even training with us yet? Couldn't spot him or Ireland's bald bonce on the avtv clip of Dazza's debut training session.

I don't think that he can even train with Villa until the work permit is thro'.

Its not just playing that counts as work, training does as well
But wasn't Cummings training with us without a work permit?

Cummings was on trial and had no contract with us. So was not officially "working" ......

Couldn't we pay Makoun cash in hand till his papers come through?

I dont fancy us in this one, a tight 1-2 reverse with us going shooting up the table from the WIgan game onward.

Makoun is ok to play, came through yesterday but won't be risked with no training or anything for 10 days - shoudl play at wigan.

I reckon you'll do us in this one. Our defence has been shocking in the last few games and we've got away with it due to a mixture of good fortune and an excellent attack. We tend to be the patron Saint of clubs in trouble and even Wolves beat us at their place this season. Add that to the feelgood factor and I sense we're in the shit here.

Must say I've been enjoying the furore over the sgning of Bent with all the accusations that you "didn't do it in the right way!" and "he's only moving for the money". It's a refrain we're very familiar with and I'm waiting for the "Villa are ruining football" and "Villa lack class" claims that we hear all the time.  Anyway, all good knockabout stuff. Good luck, may the best team win.

We might well see something of Makoun in the 2nd half, I'd like to get something out of him, just to know what the lad is capable of contributing to the side.

2-2

Tevez, Tevez
Bent, Young

I think law of averages dictates that we are due a league win. Bent's debut, can see everyone being up for it, i'm genuinely optimistic.

Even if we lose, i feel certain that there will be positives to take, really cant imagine DB not making an impression.

2-1 Villa, DB to score at least one of them. I was there on SVCs debut, but this time is  different. There we were probably complacent, now we are hungry and have a point to prove!

Aston villa - 2 - Bent, Barrys Arse

Man City - 1 - Tevez's teeth

like it!

reckon we'll lose 0-2. Bent will huff, puff and get booked. Milner will score as a late sub to add to a Tevez goal where he strings Dunne up like a kipper. Houllier booed off and Friedel marooned in car park because he's no money to fill the tank. Only cheer comes when Barry snaps the bench with his fat arse. But I hope I'm wrong. Up the Villa

Carlos usually has Tevez in his pocket, do I'd certainly have him in. Also Downing to the bench as Albrighton is far better in his defensive duties, Stewart's too much of a passenger to support Walker. Clark will need the help of Ash too.

Albrighton Stan NRC Ash

Gabby Bent

I'll take a draw now.

I'd play Bannan over Petrov. I fail to see what Petrov can do that Bannan can't, and more (especially being able to run).

Give Bannan the responsibility.

If not today, then certainly against Wigan and other crap teams.

Just watched all those missed chances against Birmingham last week on Sky Sports News. Didn't seem like it at the time, now that I watched them all again in sequence we would of won 4-1 if we had a striker to just put in the back of the net.

So many chances missed. Annoying.

He's basicially saying how Bent is going to work for us a 4-3-3 formation and how playing against City is going is going to make it really open for him making various runs where it shows a couple of diagrams how Bent's going to get behind Kompany and Toure with Petrov pinging balls through to him and Albrighton whipping crosses in etc...

He also mentioned that if he thinks Gabby and Bent together could work well.

Marc tracks back very well but his over-exuberance and inexperience mean attackers know how to draw a foul from him. Just something he'll have to learn. If Bent scores tonight it will be from an Albrigton wonder ball.

I do fear 4-4-2 today. Think it could leave us hopelessly exposed in the midfield, they'd just manouvre it around and through us with ease if we play 4-4-2 with two strikers and two wingers.

Bloody hell. That midfield looks extremely weak. Maybe we'll just hoof it up to the forwards.
