Available Saturday evening.

Brilliant. Well done lads, sounds like walker had a blinder....
-
An Expected win it's not like we weren't due one or anything.
Motm Walker. I thought his first run was good until he produced the second! Class.
-
Good result and a Villa fan scored against us.
-
Pretty awful.
We learnt nothing from that.
The only player who had a good game (Walker) was the one GH hasn't had time tohave an influence over.
It's just delaying the inevitable.
Play like that next week and we'll lose comfortably.
-
Good win. Got to question if Ashley Young is too charlie bigspuds now. I'd take Ģ20m for him.
-
Good glad we are through and Walker looks excellent. Defensive organisation needs sorting, but all the goals were class!
-
It's all about the result. Let's face it, it was a potential banana skin with our current predicament and recent history in cup games v Championship sides.
Let's hope we can build on this and get a result at the sty.
-
Overwhelming feeling is one of relief - and in the last goal a sign that we can still play and play well.
However, still looks like there is something rotten down at the Villa maybe just confidence shot, but i do fear this lot don't want to play for the manager.
-
The third goal made it sound more comfortable than it was, but a win's a win, and on we go. Walker and Albrighton were great, Pires was utterly anonymous. Ashley Young is a fucking idiot.
-
Walker looked very good, hope we can keep hold of him. Not a bad performance, Ash was stupid!!! In the hat and thats the main thing.
-
Pretty awful.

We win 3-1 away from home and you still manage to put a negative spin on it. Really, is there any need?
-
Made hard work of it. Excellent debut from Walker. Was no where near as comfortable as the scoreline would suggest. Still, in the hat and that's what matters.
We still have experienced players doing idiotic things and still look severely lacking in the middle of the park.
-
As I predicted, 3-1! A win is a win, let's build on it.
-

The 2nd player he brings in has made a difference already and you still think the managers crap, good insight

Pleased with the win Walker looks a good player just hope we can go to the sty and get a result aswell.

Christ Almighty !!
-
It would be nice if we could try and accentuate the positives rather than focus on the negatives. All the goals were brilliant and theirs was a very poor penalty decision, which if it hadn't had been given I doubt they would have come back like they did.
-
Wasn't a great performance but we got the result we needed. That goal at the end was superb.
-
Good win. Got to question if Ashley Young is too charlie bigspuds now. I'd take Ģ20m for him.
Ģ15m + Walker?
-
Walker was very good, however, when players are loaned out, the club that loans them has them watched in every game.
If he plays like that in the majority of games for us, they won't let us have him.
Let's enjoy him while he's here.

I still think the manager is crap because a; we're in the bottom 3, b; I got to all home matches and c; we struggled to beat Sheff Utd, who are crap, but made us look not that good.
-

Deal
-

Ģ15 million is all we'd get I fear.
So not worth selling.

Ģ5m, Walker and Crouch

Going on the positives, you're completely right. Good goals and a very good performance from a new player.

I didn't watch it but Scott Minto on Sky at the game didn't really infer Villa were in any trouble at all. Every time they went over to Bramhall Lane to ask if Sheffield looked like getting back into it, Minto just said 'not really'...

A win is a win but you're right we struggled against a team at the bottom of the championship!
-
Job done. Certain players were poor , NRC and Pires for me and Ash Young , I am now starting to think , he can go to Spurzzzz.. Yes he has the talent but he isnt showing that much for us at the moment, he thinks hes better than he is, lets take good money for him and get MOM walker on a permanent deal .... and we can score brilliant goals without him..
It would have been so much easier If the ref had not giving them a penalty , which wasnt , Petrov had scored his easier chance and that twat had not got sent off , so Im happy we are in the hat...

Correct, I didnt. but that bares no relevance to my original point. Is there not a single positive you can take out of that? ie debut goal, a win when were not at our best, good football for the third?
Its so f""king depressing on here sometimes...
-
A good win in the end, with great goals. I don't think that performance would have won a PL game but we're in the hat for the 4th round and that is the only thing that mattered today. I'm relieved.
-
I actually think we defended with great commitment. I mean, there were plenty of players putting their bodies on the line for the team to make blocks and the like. I also think the penalty was dubious and Cuellar toed the ball away and Young's second yellow could've have resulted in a talking too but it's not unusual for a ref to fuck things up. It wasn't perfect but we need a win however they come at the moment so we'll take it and hopefully a bit of confidence has been restored.
-
If they weren't given a dodgy pen we'd have spanked them 4 or 5. NRC was utter gash, we would have been better with Collins in midfield. Walker looks like the real deal, especially going forward. We need more players in before the Blues game though.
-

Summed up nicely I reckon.

We were never in any real trouble, the ball ping ponged around our box on a couple of occasions, without the dodgy penalty it was pretty comfortable. We didn't play great, but that doesn't matter, it's the cup and the win is all that matters.
Whether we get to keep Walker or not, I have a feeling he's going to be brilliant whilst he's here.

Watched it on France 4. Wenger was in their commentary box.
1) A Young: petulant twat.
2) Walker. Played his socks off. Well done.
3) Petrov: has turned into Marty Feldman but he isn't funny either. Great goal at the end though.
4) Gabby: Could have had two cards like Ashley. Calm down.
5) 1-3 flatters us. It could so easily have been 2-2, or worse.
Wenger said that he could see the effects of Houllier's coaching when we tried to keep the ball. Fair play. But I'd like to see the effects of Houllier's coaching when we rampage through other teams' midfield and spank the fuckers to death. A lot to ask, I know.
6) Great to win away.
7) Triple Glenmorangies help you enjoy the football.
8) Nice to see football played on a muddy potato field instead of these hybrid woven things we have today.
-
The penalty gave them a lift but after the substitutions we were all over them and created several chances then the sending off brought them back into it again. Both were very harsh decisions but it seems to be the way things are going for us at the moment. All in all though a good solid win.
-
Good grief guys it's the cup, Arsenal drew at home to Leeds, Doncaster drew with Wolves, Burton beat 'Boro, Reading beat the Baggies yadda yadda yadda, we're through, it's a positive.

We played very poorly against a poor side in a division lower. How should I be looking at it?
-
I still think the manager is crap because a; we're in the bottom 3, b; I got to all home matches and c; we struggled to beat Sheff Utd, who are crap, but made us look not that good.
Arsenal were made to look average against Leeds, it's the FA Cup, it happens.
-
We were pathetic really. A player comes up from the Championship and looks a world beater among our lot. Bit concerned by his ball watching at times but Walker did look great on the ball today. Was happy with Clark and Albrighton also. Bannan is a good player when given time and space but in a two man midfield I dont think he will ever get that to be honest. Some of the others were woeful. Young dived out of every physical confrontation as did Downing when he came on. Any of you also see when Pires lost the ball in the first half, Gabby turned away in disgust. The side is rotten to the core at the moment. Players laughing and joking with one another. Waving arms and not bothering putting in an honest effort.
To be fair in Petrov's cameo he showed the player I thought we had signed from Glasgow Celtic. Bursting into the box like that and scoring. Sad to see how far Sheff Utd have fallen and yet we were only marginally better at best.
-
We were motoring until they got awarded that penalty that wasn't I think the heads went down then just glad they put it to bed in the end.Not sure how much confidence we'll take from this and GUTTED Ashley is out for Blose despite what anyone says we need him especially against Blose who seem to be growing in confidence all the time
-
Hes a proper RB though MF, and at least GH acknowledges a proper RBs importance.
Midfield lost their way 2nd half tbh, although i thought the back 4 coped quite well.
Considering the opposition, AYoung and Gabby far too quiet again.
-
If we can get Bridge in for next Sunday, we could play Clark and Cuellar at the back.
Friedel
Walker
Cuellar
Clark
Bridge
Albrighton
Petrov
Bannan
Reo Coker
Downing
Gabby
That team could beat the Blose.
-
I could have mentioned the positives, but, as things stand, I'm not really thinking all that positively about Villa at the moment, funnily enough.
Have you ever?
-
With Young and Heskey missing against the Dog Shit, I think Houllier will have to try and get Carew geared up for one last hurrah.
We're paying him enough after all.
-
Christ, the psychology of it all is amazing isnīt it? A young kid who has spent the last few months used to winning every week gets us going.
Winning and comfortable, a dodgy decision goes against us, two if you count the Young red card and suddenly clearing the ball for a throw or a corner is a success. Until the death when that confident, fearless loanee again drives forward, gets Albrighton and Petrov showing what theyīre capable of and we score one of the goals of the season. Why canīt we fecking see a bit more of this?!
Our players are still conditioned to the MON way of playing except weīre now a lot more unsure, disorganized and more frail defensively. If Houllier wants to get us passing and moving I think heīll struggle with a lot of these players. Itīs not that they canīt - most of them are well able to do it, but they either donīt believe in G-Hou or just arenīt confident enough to stray from their comfort zone (Ashley Young a case in point - heīll never look to come between defenders and go centrally, or look for a one-two. Itīs always feint and hold and feint and overhit the cross or else look to draw the foul so we can get the big lads up for a free-kick.) This will either lead to us buying and selling a lot over the next six months or the manager leaving, and given the boardīs backing of him lately, the former is probably more likely.
-
.
5) 1-3 flatters us. It could so easily have been 2-2, or worse.
This is the only point I don't really agree with. We had more posession, more shots on target and apart from the penalty we never looked that troubled at the back.
-
Pretty average performance, walker did ok, but it was Sheffield untied, he has no prem experience.
Gabby looks a shadow of himself and is no where near as fast as last season.
But results is what counts and we won, so well done lads.
-

We played very poorly against a poor side in a division lower. How should I be looking at it?
We got the job done, scored some good goals, our new signing looked very good we are step closer to Wembley. Yes there are still blatantly things that need work but come on see the other side of things a get behind the team. This could easily have been a massive banana skin.
-

Petrov is always going to be a good player If you bring him on for 30 minutes, I just think his days of starting and playing the whole match are long gone.

Terrible display. Total humiliation, Houllier must go NOW...
Oh right, we won

Would love a quality defensive midfielder to replace him, with Petrov on the bench as 'club captain.'
-
Positive that we got through. But Ash really pissed me off today. Really thinks he is beyond all this battling stuff and he is so much better than having to push himself to much. Seriously get rid. That attitude will install the wrong attitude. Get the money for him. Totally inefective other than the one run. Well done the rest. Walker solid ........

Getting better Karl.
I actually think we can beat them.
-
Terrible display. Total humiliation, Houllier must go NOW...

Exactly, this hysteria around this game is mad. It's a cup tie away against Championship opposition and had they not got a bad penalty decision we would have won a lot more comfortably.
-
The third goal made it sound more comfortable than it was, but a win's a win, and on we go. Walker and Albrighton were great, Pires was utterly anonymous. Ashley Young is a fucking idiot.
Pretty much sums it up for me.
Good to see from the third goal that at least we can actually play some good football, so all is not lost yet!
-
needed that win, but more concerns about the performance and defending again...
another stupid sending off and both young and heskey miss the small heath game through their own stupidity...
nice to see new boy walker involved in the goals...
hope a few players can come in between now and the small heath game...
-
Doesn't need to be profound, it's right.
so if we win we're good, lose we're bad.
Did colour TV ever catch on down your way?
-
We were the better team. Made the better chances, scored three good goals and could have scored more. They got a penalty that was dodgy at best. At times we sat back and Ashley needs to be put back on the wing and told to stay there and do what he does best. But 3-1 away from home in the cup is a good result regardless of who we were playing.
-
I think the Dog shit game will be similar to this one, not too much quality, but we've got the better personnel to overcome them.
-
Great result, decent debut from Walker, dire performance overall.
Hopefully a nice easy home draw for the 4th round.
-
Doesn't need to be profound, it's right.
so if we win we're good, lose we're bad.
Did colour TV ever catch on down your way?
Well put it this way, Arsenal haven't won against Championship opposition, Sunderland have lost to a League 1 side, as did Blackpool. The point is in the cup, the key thing is to get through. In getting through we scored 3 quality goals, and the only reason we were ever under pressure was because they got a bad penalty decision go their way. So I'd hardly call that 'pathetic'. And no I don't believe you can win and be pathetic.
-
ok we won. but if we had been playing anyone else of a better calliber than sheff united such as leeds we would of lost that game. what annoyed me is that we went 2-0 up and then mr shit bags twat ****** houllier went defensive. so annoying. i dont care that we won, get him out now !!
Well done to the team for getting through and well done to walker for a solid display on debut
-
The Sunderland result was shocking, bear in mind they are in 6th position in the league.
-
We won 3-1... people need to chill. I suppose drawing against Chelsea wasn't good enough either?
Didn't watch the game but I did see Walker had scored... of course it would happen he was playing against his old team. We won which is really good, all we need to do now is follow it up against a win against the scum.
-
ok we won. but if we had been playing anyone else of a better calliber than sheff united such as leeds we would of lost that game.
Totally irrelevant.
We did enough to beat a poor Championship side.
-
ok we won. but if we had been playing anyone else of a better calliber than sheff united such as leeds we would of lost that game. what annoyed me is that we went 2-0 up and then mr shit bags twat c*** houllier went defensive. so annoying. i dont care that we won, get him out now !!
Well done to the team for getting through and well done to walker for a solid display on debut
Houllier signed Walker, any credit for that? and he went more defensive after we conceded a penalty straight after half time.
-
Games againt lower league opposition are hardly ever classics, so I'm just glad we won.
-
Pretty awful.
We learnt nothing from that.
The only player who had a good game (Walker) was the one GH hasn't had time tohave an influence over.
It's just delaying the inevitable.
Play like that next week and we'll lose comfortably.
You really don't need to share that with us.
-

Well done to the team for getting through and well done to walker for a solid display on debut
I think we may well of beat Leeds today had we played them. I do not think we went defensive- they got a dodgy penalty straight after half time. And well done on calling the Manager a c**t- very grown up.
-
what annoyed me is that we went 2-0 up and then mr shit bags twat c*** houllier went defensive.
I dread to think what you'd have said about him if he'd gone gung-ho for a third goal and we then conceded two.
If he's a c*** for winning 3-1, I shudder to think what you'd call him if we'd lost.
-
Well done Villa and Houllier. All our goals were fantastic. Good to see a bit of a backs to the wall defensive display after Ash went off. That will give the players confidence.
Well done Ged.
-
ok we won. but if we had been playing anyone else of a better calliber than sheff united such as leeds we would of lost that game.

THE THING IS WE DIDNT PLAY ANY BETTER THAN WE DID AGAINST SUNDERLAND, ONLY THING IS THAT THE OPPONENTS WE POOR, IF WE PLAY LIKE THAT ON SUDNAY WE ARE FUCKED, BUT I HOPE WE DO AND THAT WAY HOULLIER GETS THE SACK.
PS. HOULLIER WAS TOLD TO SIGN THAT PLAYER BY THE SCOUTS, HOULLIER CANT TAKE THE CREDIT
-
Ashley the bash of the month?
His sending of was hars, created a brilliant goal, and 2 fouls and 2 yellows. What do people expect? him to grow a few inches? He gets fouled, and that destroys his trickery... Jeez when will people be happy? Even if we had a Hesky strength Messy, he would be slaugtherd for being to slow or to big
-
Hey, even if this tie had been last season it would have been a potential banana skin. It was always going to be tough regardless of how we were playing, the fact we won despite playing like arses for last 12 games mean it's a job well done. The crap pen decision knocked us and shifted the game but don't remember Friedal being asked to make any exceptional saves. The two saves he made were ones you'd expect him to make and the defence made some pretty good blocks at times. I think we just need to be braver going forward since we aren't commiting players in the box, but that is down to fear.
-
ok we won. but if we had been playing anyone else of a better calliber than sheff united such as leeds we would of lost that game.

Exactly. FFS we won what could have been a very tricky game. Well done Houllier and the team.
-

YOU WOULD FAINT IF YOU HEARD WHAT I WAS SHOUTING AT HIM FROM BEHIND THE DUGOUT ON WEDNESDAY NIGHT THEN
-

Calm down, and against Sunderland we should have won as well. I imagine the scouts make recommendations, rather than sign players.

Well done to the team for getting through and well done to walker for a solid display on debut
Div.

Presumably he would have to use capitals, large font and underlining if we had lost. Have any Premier League teams been to Brammall Lane and hammered them in recent years? Calm down. We won.

pmk1981, please wind your neck in, stop using CAPS LOCK and be a little more considered in your posts.

There are a lot of people that need to get a grip.
It's obvious that most of the senior players don't want to play for GH.
It's obvious that most of the senior players are & where due to be overhauled anyway.
It's obvious the junior players are keen to play for GH.
It's obvious the team will not click until enough senior players have been brought in by GH.
It seems a few would rather keep the lazy useless players, that have suddenly forgotten what a football is and what position they used to be good at and get rid of the manager.
I'd rather get rid of the lazy useless players and see what the next crop of Villa players can do for the team.
-
Sheffield have a new manager, they were clearly well up for it and it was always going to be a difficult game. FA cup ties like that are never classics.
If the players had not been up for it, not set up properly or turned off by Houllier we would have lost. As did Sunderland at home to Notts C., Blackpool away to Southampton, WBA away to Reading and Blackpool away to lesser lights as well.
-
Good win away from home against a poor side that was always a potential banana skin.
decent performance from walker on his debut and also some great goals.
One thing puzzling me is why the Fuck didn't houllier take off young after his booking when were cruising comfortably at 2-0 and were playing blues next week!.
seemed obvious to everyone but.....
-
Great result - good for confidence and unlucky to concede a pen. We are through and now hopefully the manager can get another 3 players in before blues game .
Siilly sending off for ash and a tough game at blues ahead but let's hope this a start of a decent run- surprised at the negative comments of some after a 3-1 away win- well done Kyle walker , lovely goal!
-
what annoyed me is that we went 2-0 up and then mr shit bags twat c*** houllier went defensive.
I dread to think what you'd have said about him if he'd gone gung-ho for a third goal and we then conceded two.
If he's a c*** for winning 3-1, I shudder to think what you'd call him if we'd lost.
YOU WOULD FAINT IF YOU HEARD WHAT I WAS SHOUTING AT HIM FROM BEHIND THE DUGOUT ON WEDNESDAY NIGHT THEN
Proud of you
-
IF WE PLAY LIKE THAT ON SUDNAY WE ARE FUCKED, BUT I HOPE WE DO AND THAT WAY HOULLIER GETS THE SACK.
FUCKING HELL!
Really? I cannot reconcile myself with that sentiment.
We got what we needed. Get players in and start to build from this and our troubles and my present issues with Houllier will melt away. I just hope we do so even if I am not keen on the manager. No Villa fan should want us to lose especially to that shower.
-
A good win in the end, with great goals. I don't think that performance would have won a PL game but we're in the hat for the 4th round and that is the only thing that mattered today. I'm relieved.
Summed up nicely I reckon.
Agreed. Sheff Utd were possibly the worst team I've seen in years and we made hard work of it. It really should have been a walk in the park, as it never really felt like a cup tie. They seemed resigned to losing from kick off. Our confidence is completely shot.
Feel really sorry for Gabby, the service he's used to has completely dried up and at this rate looks the most unlikely player to score. Why can't we get a first time ball into the box rather than pissing about with it or pulling it back and giving the opposition time to get players back? We did it once today and Albrighton scored. We're not creating enough chances. First half we only created three. I doubt the second half was much better.
Petrov's goal showed the gulf in class, Sheff Utd were there for the taking but we just (with the exception of Walker) completely lack the confidence to go out and show how good we can be.
-

Spot on. Whats the alternative anyway? A new manager in a week to two? He will have to deal with players who are reacting to not having their way and have seen off one manager who tried to sort them out. What chance would he have? It would be, "do as we say, or we will get you the sack".

-
Well done Villa and Houllier. All our goals were fantastic. Good to see a bit of a backs to the wall defensive display after Ash went off. That will give the players confidence.
Well done Ged.
I think it was an O'Neill like performance.
We always struggled against these teams under MON too.
I am hoping that the win, the first for a while, will generate some confidence and inspre the team and the fans for Blose and beyond.
For those looking at Championship football with rose tinted spectacles, look again - just think, we'd be playing Sheff Utd type teams every single weak, they aren't easy to beat and raise their game against a 'bigger' club.

Remember the days when this thread was about what actually happened in the game? We even had player ratings.
Now we get post after post of the 'oh, yes he did', 'oh, no he didn't' variety which just totally ruins it for everyone else...

Of course Leeg, just fed up with self-indulgent arguments which take over and really have nothing much to do with the game in question. Also they just end up being yet another thread on whether we should keep Houllier or not...

The game was live down here. Yes we made hard work of it but when we did play it was good stuff against a motivated bunch. Typical cup tie.
Walker looks a real talent and of course he knows a few of our own youngsters playing for England. He really plays without fear. I hope he carries on that way. Or rather, I hope we let him.
Pires is honestly a waste of oxygen and cancerous in that dressing room too. Apparently.
Great result. Sorry, let me do that again: GREAT RESULT! Maybe that plonker will hear me if I shout too.

Can't believe a few of the comments. We've just won yet a few people still have to put a depressive slant on it. If it boosts confidence then who cares?

The penalty gave them a lift but after the substitutions we were all over them and created several chances then the sending off brought them back into it again. Both were very harsh decisions but it seems to be the way things are going for us at the moment. All in all though a good solid win.
Is the right answer. It should have been easy second half but the penalty was nonsense and we weathered it very well after that. Would have been better to be several goals out of sight but again we don't get the breaks - Petrov was unlucky when played in as that was a top drawer save. Only poor strategy was replacing Bannan and not NRC with Downing.
Walker was good and maybe this win will turn the corner for us.
-
The videos don't work on my iphone. Never mind. Cheers anyway.
I'll watch the highlights later to see if they really were sick.

Really difficult game, away in the cup, and I have to say I thought we played pretty well (although I we could do fine without Pires!). Some good goals and I thought further evidences in the goals we scored of Houllier's methods paying some dividends.
Young was an idiot for getting sent off, Walker made a very promising start to his time at Villa, NRC looked a bit ropey, Dunne was good again, Albrighton was very good, so all in all I don't think we could ask for too much more. Well done all round, in my view.
-
I'm just happy we're scoring 6 in 3 games now.
so am i,
but only 1 from the centre forwards, we desperatley need a striker who can score some goals,
we have some great young players coming through, which is why i think we'l be ok in the end,
but we still need someone up front, the ones we have at the moment collectivly are no better than average
-

Didn't watch the game due to work but was keeping tabs with it on the sky sports app on the iPhone. The app had bannan at left back. Clarke centre mid with young on the left, pires on the right and albrighton with gabby upfront. Is that right? Is is whoever doin the line up on the app just bored and thought he'd have a laugh? If it's true, fair play cuz it worked but that does seem a bit messed up.
The also seem to be using he words, lofted, hoofed, long searching ball and clearance a lot in their commentary. Was it really like thAt?
-
I see Ashley Young got red card. What are the reasons ? Diving or moaning at referee ?
-
Some good goals and I thought further evidences in the goals we scored of Houllier's methods paying some dividends.
Albrighton's was a text book MON goal. Petrov's was a bit special though. As for Walker's, that's what you get when you have a player full of confidence.
-
What superb goals - thanks Leeg - loved Petrov's in particular, great interplay with young Marc

Two bookings for two fouls i think.
-
Gabby looks totally lost at the moment and we really have got to get someone in before the scum game. Carew is finished with us and Houllier knows it. A debut for a striker with a winning goal would totally change our season. Farplay to Houllier today. His first signing and he scores and has a solid game. Lets start giving him credit when he deserves it ..........
-

And up against a Championship defence. In the Prem he would have been stopped by the first man.
Not knocking him, he played well.
-
BTW Stevenage are two up against Newcastle and dominating them.
And some still want to whinge about our result today?
-
I've just got back from the game. My observations about the game are:
- good confidence-boosting win against a poor side who were given more cause for hope than they deserved.
- good to see Banana man back in the starting line-up: I thought he looked good and did not deserve to be subbed.
- NRC played a good holding game.
- Walker - goal aside - looks good going forward and worked well with Albrighton. Defensively, he may have some work to do re positioning.
- Gabby worked his socks off for very little return, and got m oved wide left late on; crazy! The guy deserves a medal for his work-rate.
- Pires is way past it; he really did not contribute anything and at least GH saw fit to subb him.
- Ashley Young should have been subbed rather than Banana-man: apart from his contributuion to the second goal he looked out of sorts and prima-donna-ish (take the effing snood off, kid, for a start). His 2 yellows were classic Ashley - petulant and unnecessary.
- Friedel kept us in the game with 2 amazing saves.
- Downing (a subb) still manages to frustrate by doing too little for a senior player.
Summary - the game was what I expected really. Frustrating and worrying but ultimately a success. Hou needs to be more adventurous; after the penalty (which was not a great decision, IMHO), we should have taken the game to them rather than invited them onto us.
Final word: the 5k Villa fans were generally magnificent.
-
Very pleased we're through
Now a nice cushy home draw please

They did make it relatively easy for for him but it was good to see a defender attacking the space when they opened up in midfield.

We could have Drogna, Messi or Ronaldo up there and it wouldn't change a thing as the service to Gabby is so poor. The lad is desperate for a goal. You could see that with Albrighton's goal, having set the move up, he raced up field and got himself on the near post drawing defenders with him, only for the ball to be played behind him for Albrighton. The lad looked gutted.

Some plusses (new kid, goals), some minuses (uncle bob- heheheh). Overall you can't ask for more at what was on paper a possible cup upset. Now Forget the cup and onwards and upwards

True but nobody likes any player running at you with the ball, especially through the middle. I wish we'd do it more often.

Didn't Dublin do a Hatrick on his Debut?
He did 8 goals in 3 starts, missing a penalty as well...First player (afaik) to score hattrick 2 times against the same team in same league same season (southampton first for Coventry, and then again for Villa 1 month later)
-
A welcome result but we were never in control....idiot challenge for penalty by carlos[it was minimal contact i know].A good pass and movement for Petrov goal.Ashley's head looks to be somewhere else. His 2 bookings were childish to say the least.Pires is useless....he should be in league 1 at best.
-
Can't think of a defender scoring on his debut before
Stuart Gray played left back every now and then but he was definitely in midfiled on his debut (Bardford away)
-
When was our last debut goal ?
Heskey against Portsmouth?
-
just got back (live in Shef) a few beers worse for wear. Good first half, terrible in the second. Two stupid, petulant bookings for Ash.
4K Villa fans, only 16.5k total attendance - easily Blades worst attendance of the season - shocking.
Solid debut from Walker, apart from silly pass across our area. Give him 5 games before clamouring for his signature.

Albrighton goal - Clicky (http://www.101greatgoals.com/videodisplay/marc-albrighton-sheffield-united-8101304/)
Cheers.

I have heard that Walker is the bait for Young. 2 good games from Walker and Young is gone.

Where from?
-
just got back (live in Shef) a few beers worse for wear.
Great finish from Albrighton with his left foot, how come we were so bad in the 2nd half?
-
Can't think of a defender scoring on his debut before
Stuart Gray played left back every now and then but he was definitely in midfiled on his debut (Bardford away)
What a great game that was!

From Villa to Tottenham?

On the contrary, I heard from a really good source, someone that works at the club, that Ash is very close to signing a new deal. He wants to put an end to all of the speculation as it's affecting his game.
-
Great win today. A much needed win before the derby game, had we lost today then we would have been in BIG trouble. 3 good goals and another 3rd round win, we haven't had too many of those in recent years. Well done lads. Onwards and upwards.
P.S Ash, you are an idiot.
-

I really hope that's true Toronto
-
Can't see ash being close to signing a new contract as it was agreed not to even discuss it again until the seasons over- I'd be very surprised if he did.
As for walker, I'm sure spuds will double the asking price but he loons a class player- saw him for qpr at Xmas and was outstanding- I hope we sign him long term- let's get some deals done this week and stuff the blues next weekend !
-
Yeah...if ASHLEY screwed his head on....he could become a lifer at Villa and live happily ever after.
-
Walker was immense today, only one real error when he tried to pass the ball out of defence and it was under hit.
Thought we soaked up their pressure well in 2nd half.
Petrov did well when he came on, was more advanced than usual.
Thought Bannan was good first half.
Villa fans were brilliant today! They were quick at serving the beer, was impressed.
Sidwell, what's the score? He he he.
-
Thanks for the links to the goals, chaps. Great to watch them again and again and again.
Have to say Ashley is at his best when he takes the ball to the line and whipping it in. Great move, great goal.
-
Re: defenders scoring on debut- Zat Knight. Plus Kent Nielsen if you count friendlies.

Arguably the most exciting Villa game I've been to

That's a good idea for Villa Memories.

Yes, sorry if on wrong thread

No, not at all. I just meant it gave me an idea for Villa Memories.

One of mine too, certainly sticks in the memory, Andy and Stuart both scoring on their debuts, great day out...

Just got in from work, why did AY get sent off?
Looking forward to watching MOTD (well ITV) now, I've been avoiding it recently!

I was there my boss was a bradford fan and i was living in manchester, took him to the game, he took me to a great pub before the game, then the debuts of the 2 Grays, on the way back across the M62 there was a burnt out car with a burnt out bloke in across the motorway which i only jusy avoided, i took the bumper off as i went past in thick fog memories eh
-
Just got in from work, why did AY get sent off?
He was wearing a snood
-
Just got in from work, why did AY get sent off?
because Barry was off the pitch receiving treatment
-
Just back. Haven't read the thread yet but my thoughts....
Not a brilliant performance especially in the second half when Sheffield threw everything at us, but objective achieved and we're in the hat tomorrow.
Positives - Kyle Walker looks very good. Not just for his run and goal (good start mind!) but his all round game as an attacking right back. What are the chances of Harry letting him go though? Friedel kept us in the game. Good performance again from the youngsters - Clark looks increasingly assured, Albrighton was lively, and I thought Bannan was unlucky to be taken off.
Negatives - Pires does a passable impression of the invisible man's shadow. I thought he was completely pointless. Dunne was poor on and off. Gabby misses another one on one but this one certainly a lot harder than the one Stan fucked up in the second half, although he took his later chance well. Ash needlessly getting himself sent off means both he and Heskey now miss the Blose game.
Good crowd at the Villa end - but only about 16500 all told - thought more Sheffield fans would turn out to get the scalp of a currently poor performing PL team.
As an aside, before the game I was chatting to a personal friend of one of the senior players (who had acquired tickets for him). Names witheld to protect the identity but let's just say he had a non-English accent. He confirmed in no uncertain terms that a number of the senior players are not at all happy with Houllier and his methods, and many aren't happy with the training regime. I pointed out that if I was a professional footballer on Ģ50-60,000 a week it shouldn't matter who the manager was and I would expect them to follow the regime of whoever the manager was. Appears certain though that, as we already know really, a number of players will be shown the door.
Oh, and nice to see Ian Taylor was there too
-
Just got in from work, why did AY get sent off?
He was wearing a snood
A straight red then?
-
Good, but I was worried for a while 2nd half.
Anyway we are in the hat, this could be our year.
Villa fans in the lower tier taking the piss out of corpulent steward, you really are so cruel.
-
...
Villa fans in the lower tier taking the piss out of corpulent steward, you really are so cruel.
Also a rather portly Sheffield fan sitting near our fans - to be fair he took it in really good spirit and actually tried to get his tits out for the lads!
-
Pretty awful.
We learnt nothing from that.
The only player who had a good game (Walker) was the one GH hasn't had time tohave an influence over.
It's just delaying the inevitable.
Play like that next week and we'll lose comfortably.
Clearly written by someone who was there.
It was a comfortable win. (from someone who was)
-
The third goal made it sound more comfortable than it was, but a win's a win, and on we go. Walker and Albrighton were great, Pires was utterly anonymous. Ashley Young is a fucking idiot.
No it didn't, it was comfortable.
-

No it was sort of round and black.
-

LOL.
P.S I AM LAUGHING AT YOU NOT WITH YOU.
-
The comments from people who weren't there sum up all the recent posts. Clueless.
We were comfortable winners today, there were inevitable periods of pressure from the opposition but we were the better team and won.
I was there. Most of the people that have knocked the performance weren't within 80 miles.

Kyle Walker's goal (http://www.101greatgoals.com/videodisplay/kyle-walker-sheffield-united-8101215/)
Trying to be "down wiv da kids" is a banable offence
What a sick goal.
I quite liked it myself.
So did I that's why I said it was a sick goal bro.

Drummond the ground is exactly 76 miles from my house and I think it was very comfortable watching it via a stream. So you are right about the 80 miles!

Didn't another debutant score that day too? 4-2 wasn't it?
-
Was Staunton a left-back when he scored against Sheff Wednesday?
I thought Carl Tiler scored on his debut, but looking on the net he got injured on his debut against Everton and was out for ten months. He scored in his comeback game.
-
Well, I can't say I was looking forward to my trip to Sheffield: we're crap at the moment, for one and the Woodhead Pass is a bugger in winter, but I've come back happier and safely.
Though we played reasonably well, albeit against a team that are, manifestly, even worse than us , and fully deserved the win.
Good goal from Walker, linked up well with Albrighton.
Still looked shaky at times defensively, but don't think it was a penalty. Need to look at it again on TV later.
Ashley has developed into a petulant under-achiever. Today summed him up.
-
Just got back from another poor and disjointed performance. Witnessed another 3 schoolboy defending errors and were we playing a better team they would have scored. Gabby and Young just arnt at the races and looked completely disinterested.
Great to see a proper right back who plyed very well and was the biggest positive. Also Bannan and Albrighton played well in patches and were our better players.
Our third goal was the best i have seen from villa for quite a while.
Maybe better times ahead.

Three of 4 scored that day. can you name the other 2?

Regis & Atkinson

Staunton was always a left back even when he played in midfield;)

Hmmm. Hardly news i guess but still disappointing we seem to have so many trouble makers at the club

Mac, I think Andy Gray made his debut but don't think he scored.
Zat Knight scored on his debut didn't he?

Good win away from home against a poor side that was always a potential banana skin.
decent performance from walker on his debut and also some great goals.
One thing puzzling me is why the Fuck didn't houllier take off young after his booking when were cruising comfortably at 2-0 and were playing blues next week!.
seemed obvious to everyone but.....
Very good point.

What made it more fustrating was he actually was being subbed and went to go applauding the fans. Unfortantely the boards had wrong numbers and he stayed on. As you say after the first yellow he should have been taken off.
-

stop whinging! good day out, walker was great Albrighton did well and Bannan.

Well done to the players and the mighty Villa army that made the trip.
We are alive and kicking in the next round of the FA Cup!
Please god let us beat the scum next week.

4-2 yes, Andy Gray scored too and it was his debut, it was a fantastic game considering they were going so well at the time but we were awesome on the road that season.
-
I've just got back from the game.
For those who were there here's an already-posted view of the game.
-
I thought Pires did well?
-
what is Houllier playing at ?
Playing reserves in an early Cup away match and winning, crazy.
That's not the Mon way
-
Good away trip. Nice to win, was starting to forget what it felt like. Walker looks decent.
Think I'll leave it there.
-
We tried to put a display on today, all flags and group banner rejected by the stewards even though South Yorkshires finest said the was no problem legally, hope the confetti looked good if anyone has pics we would appreciate!
-
Looking at his recent post match interviews, Ged is very quick to praise the fans which is good. I think we need to give him a chance to get his squad and see what he can do.

This isn't particularly a knock at him, but it's a bit transparent, really, isnt it? The charm offensive thing, i mean.
He just needs to stop us losing so many games, then the fans would get behind him.
-
well at least Houlier got a better result than the last manager in charge when we played Sheff Utd in the FA cup last time...

I agree it is a bit transparent, but never the less it's still an effort. I just hope he can sort us out.

I honestly think a Makoun and a striker would make a massive difference to that team..
-
I honestly think a Makoun and a striker would make a massive difference to that team..
We just need a boost, we're a better team than the web toed six fingered fuckers from across the city, but we need some belief and we need some energy. I have faith in Houllier's ability to look at Villa as a club, not just a first team, it's his first team management that concerns me but I hope he gets that right and there are some positives to take from this performance, all the goals were good for a start.
-
I honestly think a Makoun and a striker would make a massive difference to that team..
When Arry had his first January transfer window after taking over his first two buys were a striker and a defensive midfielder to get his team out of the dropzone. The same thing could easily happen for us. The trouble is those buys cost almost Ģ30mil. It doesn't look like we are looking to spend anything like that so far.

It's one thing to have those thoughts and keep them to yourself. But to type them on an internet message board is quite another. We've had some quality on here, especially of late, but that post has elevated him to the very top of the Mount Moron.
-
Just got home after a great day out which has involved far too much beer ( and a few cans of cider), great company from all the lads I've met up with today from North West Villa (you know who you are), nice meal in the banyan tree back in manc, a nice couple of scoops in the Thirsty Scholar on Manchesters Oxford Road with accompanying soundtrack from DJ Martin the Mod ( can't beat that Northern Soul sound). Oh and the football was good as well.
-
He was TOLD, nay ORDERED by the scouts to sign Walker. Oi Houllier sign that Walker bloke or fucking else!
-
By the way, this was my first Villa away day since 1994 (and I don't give a shit what that makes me amongst the hierarchy of bestest fans), and it was utterly wonderful. Great pubs, great beer, great company.
-
Fook! What made you bite the bullet after 17 years away Dave? What was your last one - The Dell, Southampton April '94 when Chico Hamilton and his rough mates broke the crossbar?
-
I think the result flattered us. We came out in the second half as though the job was already done and there was a complete lack of resolve until the substitutions were made.
Dunne puffed and blundered as always, Ash was a total sucker and Pires was once again off the pace, over confident and out of touch and it took a couple of top quality saves from Brad to keep the score line at 2-1.
The fans seemed much less up for it than usual at away games and much more pissed but we have had a lot of pain at away games so far this season so it is only to be expected. I thought the stewards did a good job in the face of some very close quarters in their faces singing of the Want To Go Home song.
-
Solid debut from Walker, apart from silly pass across our area. Give him 5 games before clamouring for his signature.
Yes indeed. Remember Joey Gudjohnssen!
Our support was excellent yesterday but I was shocked at Sheffield United's. I thought a club of their stature would be well up for a 3rd Round FA Cup tie at home to one of the big boys.
-
A wins a win and away from home in a cup match quite an achivement for a new Manager.
The PR at the club is atrocious especially for a US owned company with longstanding NFL connections, and Houllier is no slouch in that dept either, even if he has a long way to go to overcome the Anfield faux pas.
Here's hoping by the Next game he's signed a few more and instilled more consistency. A good performance always seems to be followed by a bad one or two.
Winning games is the ultimate good PR
-
Very good win.
It would have been even more comfortable had the ref been able to spot a tackle from 2 foot away.

-
I had a great day, but i was disappointed at the low turn out by The Sheffield fans, which I think flattened the atmosphere abit.
But it was nice to have a good win away from home.
-
Was a great day out and refreshing to go to a proper traditional football ground a short walk from the City Centre. Pretty sad that they couldn't sell more than 10k.
Not loving the constant barracking of the opposition and Blues by our fans. Bit over the top if you ask me and wish we would concentrate on singing about the Villa. However, good to take such massive support when we are struggling.
I thought the game summed up the season to date - we have the ability but lacking confidence and players don't seem to know what the tactics are. Can't seem to dominate a game at all.
-
Good day out all in all. Would have snatched your hand off for 3-1 before the game.
-
Good day out, we started like a train and looked comfortable against a poor Sheffield team, we certainly lost our way in the second half until Downing came on with all the players holding onto the ball too long rather than pass the bleeding thing crisply.
Fantastic debut from Walker although I'll reserve judgement until he has faced a more testing team, he doesn't lack confidence though.
We really have some grade A idiots as fans though, I'm sure I was a right twat after a few ales when I was 17 so I can forgive them but some of the stuff shouted about Houlier, from people old enough to know better, was beyond the pale.
-
Good Win, more comfortable than a lot of people are making out. Very enjoyable day all round and Sheffield certainly isn't a s**t hole - great pubs (certainly the three I was in anyway), thanks to Drummond and Joe's mate for the local knowledge.
-
It was a little nerve wracking to watch, but we won 3-1, away in what was a difficult game. A good cup match-Walker, Dunne and Albrighton were very good and I think as a team, we played fine. Lets build on it. Bolton at home for us in the next round i reckon
-
Not really bothered about the result (as discussed elsewhere) but a nice win all the same.
However after watching the game back, how much fitter does Walker look then the rest of our boys? I honestly don't think anyone of our lot could of scored that goal, good acceleration and kept up a great pace, he did it all game. When was the last time Young, Gabby, Downing have done that?
Our players just look knackered.

Probably would have done more pubs but for Joe C's profound statement:
"We have a seat, there's the bar, we haven't tried all of the beers yet."
Can't argue with that logic.

I thought we looked very comfortable in the first half but playing Pires was a mistake. The way the Sheff Utd defence were looking, i'd have changed it for Fonz and we might have had the game sewn up in the first half..
Second half they got the early goal they need and we looked nervous. Petrov should have put the game to bed with his one on one before he did but luckily it ended up ok.
I was impressed by what i saw of Walker, but like a few others have said, let's reserve judgement until he's play in the Prem. Let's hope this gives the players confidence going into the Derby.
Good day all round, it was nice to go to an old football ground again. The Ģ2.26 a pint in Rotherham went down well too.
-
To be honest, I have remained impressed less than zero by the game, yesterday.
Yes, we have won against an average team of championship, but we conceded a goal, and definitely suffered like beasts until the 90°.
The only difference with the previous matches is that GH played a full back, not a CB, as a right back, and Agbonlahor forward and not on the flank.
These are two steps ahead.
But we are still far from being the team that I'd like AVFC were.
-
The comments from people who weren't there sum up all the recent posts. Clueless.
We were comfortable winners today, there were inevitable periods of pressure from the opposition but we were the better team and won.
I was there. Most of the people that have knocked the performance weren't within 80 miles.
Well I watched it on the radio and I thought we were terrible.

Fair comments but we are learning to walk again after breaking both legs ..so step at a time.
-
Still puzzled by Gabby playing very left sided role yesterday, looked a bit short up front at times ?? or is that just me?
-
Seemed obvious even to Ashley Young. He applauded the fans as he trotted off the pitch only to be told he was staying on.
I recall MON saying something along the lines that Young likes to play every minute of every match and gets annoyed if he doesn't.
-
Well. let's hope that brings a bit of confidence back. Although thinking about it, it could be very similar to the West Ham game on the opening day. We looked good then but have since realised just how poor the opposition were.
Walker looks confident and likes to get forward. Hope he does not get undone by PL opposition who may look at getting in behind him.
Gabby really needs a goal but I don't know where one is going to come from. He really is disinterested at times and I do not think it was tactics that put him out wide left late on, I think he went out there with the ball and just couldn't be bothered getting back in the middle.
Bannan showed some nice touches which we know about but as has been said, seems to get overpowered in a two man midfield.
Ashley, well what can I say. He had that manner about him yesterday which made me feel that he was going to get into bother. Don't know what it was, but I just felt that he was going to get a red card and thus miss the Blues match. Various times in the match he seemed to pull out of challenges and then himself dive in at their players. Other than the goal he set up he was very poor and if you look, he actually jumps out of the way when the ball is played up to him as he knows the defender is coming in. He then chases the defender and deliberately brings him down, knowing he is on a yellow.
It will be interesting to see what the formation is next sunday, let's hope there are a couple of new faces who, if they bring the same enthusiasm as Walker, will liven the team up no end.

I didn't realise that Walker was so tall, that will bode well for defending corners etc.

Bloody good player, how the hell can we convince Spuds that he's actually shite and get him cheap?

Walker could be a real risk and for an idea of this look no further than Liverpool. We could be in a very similar situation that Johnson and Carragher have got into on many occasions as Walker bombs forward we're caught out on the break with Dunne not possessing the pace and stamina to keep up with the counter.
Either pick defenders who actually defend or get get fitter centre halves.

Or alternatively enjoy watching a skilful young player who plays exciting, attacking football.

You're probably right but it was just nice to see someone play without fear, with energy and zest and seemingly to appear to enjoy playing.

He'll soon get that knocked out of him if the training is as bad as some of the senior pro's would have us believe.

Enjoyable day yesteday. Nice ground not far from the city center although the turn out from the home fans was disapointing. The atmosphere struggled to get going imo and fans around us were more concerned with taking the piss out of the stewards instead of supporting the team, which is ok for a few minutes but tiresome for any longer.
We did what was expected of us and I cannot remember 3 better goals that we've scored in the same game. They put us under a bit of pressure without creating much.
Our names in the hat for the next round so cannot ask for much more and hopefully it will give us some confidence to take into the game next week.

Can't think of a defender scoring on his debut before
Stuart Gray played left back every now and then but he was definitely in midfiled on his debut (Bardford away)
Didn't another debutant score that day too? 4-2 wasn't it?
4-2 yes, Andy Gray scored too and it was his debut, it was a fantastic game considering they were going so well at the time but we were awesome on the road that season.
That video, along with a number of other's from 1987, was on YouTube a couple of years back. Sadly not on now. All we have is the Blose v Villa - Garry Thompson's double.
A guy with the name trees ??? posted it.

Steve Staunton scored at Wednesday didn't he?
