Watching the World Cup shocking moments programme this week made me wonder If the makers did a similar type compilation on Villa, what moments you think they'd include.
-
This could be a depressing thread.
Enckleman vs Blose
Sorensen v Blose
Parker v Norwich - missed sitter
Angel v Spurszzz - own goal, missed penalty and kicked flag onto ball trying to take a quick corner causing it to go out for a goal kick
Mountfield v Norwich - own goals (twice)
Balaban - £6 million for err...
Doncaster 3 Villa 0 ** shudders**
That's enough for me. I'm off to have a bit of a cry.
-
I don't quite think that we would have O'Leary on the show like they did on the World Cup one... Perhaps though he'd be responsible for a few though.
Lets start with an easy one: Hodge's backpass.
-
Bosnich nazi salute at White Hart Lane.
-
Chelski this season 7-1
-
Oxford away in the league cup semi final.
0-5 against Forest in the 80s with Trevor Christie taking us apart.
-
Losing 4-1 to Coventry at home in the FA Cup.
It's still the only game I've ever left early (when the 4th went in).
In fact, as the 4th went in, I went to throw my copy of H&V off the upper tier of the Holte (I was a few rows back from the front) in anger. However, I'd failed to throw it with the spine facing forward and so all that happened is that it opened, flapped about a bit and went about one row forward. I stormed off and left.
-
Savos spitting incident at Blackburn.
Losing at home to Oldham to end the dream.
Losing a 4-1 lead at Spurs.
-
Dion giving savage a glasgow kiss.
The most beautiful thing ive ever seen on a football pitch.

Wasn't that a league game? I think it's their only league win at VP. The FA Cup was 1-0 when Bosnich made a wonder save and I think Byfield was denied what looked a nail on penalty (I only remember seeing it at the game as it's one of many matches i've made a point of never ever seeing again) when one of theirs blocked a cross with his hand?
I could of course be totally wrong as my memory is shite these days!
-
0-5 v Bradford in front of 4K
Chris Nicholl "scoring" all 4 in a 2-2 draw.
4-1 up v Leicester with 10 mins to go and drawing 4-4.
Ugo's debut.
Defending league champions starting their defence of the title with a 1-0 home defeatto newly promoted Notts Co. (Regularly losing to Notts Co, even though they were truly shite).
The Champions of Europe being beaten on the opening day of the season 3-1 by a shit Sunderland side. Followed a few days later with a 5-0 twatting at Everton. Surely the worst 2 results by any club in it's first 2 competitive games after winning the European Cup.
-
Oxford away in the league cup semi final.
0-5 against Forest in the 80s with Trevor Christie taking us apart.
Was that the 6-0 in '86 when we waved to Cloughie and he waved back? And we started celebrating their goals?
Or is my memory really worse than I thought?

you are indeed correct, Gary Breen blocked the ball with his hand about 10 foot in the air and then rolled around on the floor holding his face, Moldovan scored for them after a great bit of skill from George the legend

Cheers Luke, at least I know I remember some things! Although all I do actually remember is the handball and the Bosnich save. And leaving VP well and truly fecked off.
I also think that the 4-1 game was the last time any club in the top flight started the game with 11 English players.

The first defeat at the sty when they were promoted to the premier league - SHUDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDERS AT THE THOUGHT!

Dion giving savage a glasgow kiss.

-
Leading 4-1 at Spurs then drawing 4-4.
-
Collymores home debut against Blackburn. Was it 0-3 at half time and finish 0-4?
-
Losing 1-7 to Arsenal at VP.
-
Losing 5-1 at home to Man City in 1991.
-
FA Cup Final 2000.
-
Losing 1-7 to Arsenal at VP.
When?

14th December, 1935
-
The signing of Emile Heskey.
The not selling him at the first available opportunity.
-
14th December, 1935
Was that when Ted Drake went on a scoring rampage and said whenever he went abroad everyone wanted to talk to him about Aston Villa?
-
Forest 6-0, Southampton 5-0 and Charlton 3-0 under McNeill.
Losing 3-0 at Oldham in the FA Cup.
The 2000 Cup Final.

Dion giving savage a glasgow kiss.
If he hadn't of butted that twat Savage the game would of finished 0-0. That game has to be the most horrid i've ever attended at Villa Park.
The most beautiful thing ive ever seen on a football pitch.

Every time the ball landed at Bernie Gallagher's feet.
-
Dion giving savage a glasgow kiss.
The most beautiful thing ive ever seen on a football pitch.
This event also contributed greatly to our eventual defeat. With 11 vs 11, it was heading for 0-0.
And for that reason, Dion, you are a fool.

Are you sure? I always thought we were losing by the time Dion was sent off, and that it had little bearing on the game.
I could be wrong though as I've tried to erase that night from my memory.

It makes no odds what the score was. Dion took us down to their level - losing to them is never pretty but we could at least have done it with a bit of dignity.

Agreed, but that wasn't my point. My point was that I don't think it was heading for a 0-0 when it happened, therefore it didn't change the outcome of the game.

He got sent off after 51 minutes and they scored their first after 74.

I stand corrected, I remembered it wrong but would rather forget that night full stop
-
Yes it was 0-0 at the time. They scored in the last 20 minutes before our customery goalkepping error allowed them to get a 2nd goal. After this, Gudjohnsen got sent off bringing us down to 9 men.
Horrible night.

The abject surrender of a 2-0 lead to Hull to lose 2-3 in the last few minutes on a grey grey afternoon in November 1967 made me realise we really were shit and getting back to the 1st Division wasn't going to be happening any time soon.
With all that's happened since, that remains my most shocking moment, probably because up to that point I'd had a cheerfully youthful (and utterly unrealistic) belief in Aston Villa to overcome such trivial obstacles such as being trashed 2-6 by Chelsea (on Match Of The Day too!) and gaining a masterly 2 points from our last nine games the season before to join Blackpool in going down.
I've tried to temper every disappointment since then by remembering how it felt to stand there and watch a terrible team lose so gutlessly. It's largely worked.
-
Throwing it away against Stoke City last season. They were easily the worst away side I've ever seen at VP until the last 5 minutes.
-
2-3 against Man Yoo in the Cup.
-
God yea Bernie Gallager!! anything he did. me and my dad hated him. as a twelve year old i wanted to leave early cus he was in the team ha ha.

My first full season was 86-87 as a 9 year old, so I think I share your viewpoint.
-
Losing to Wimbledon at Plough Lane in the FA Cup to a Alan Cork goal in what seemed to be the last minute of an extremely long and wet game.
Losing to Wimbledon at Selhurst in the FA Cup to penalties taken in the fog at the other end of the ground.
These may not have ever happened or if they did, happened differently, but that's how I remember them.
-
Rioting at Anderlecht.
Glasgow Rangers friendly.
Trying to offload Brian Little to Blues.
Ron Saunders joining Blues.
Demolishing Trinity Road stand.
-
2-3 against Man Yoo in the Cup.
and 2-0 up with 15 minutes to go and they brought Roy Keane and Van Nistelrooy off the bench

Whilst the thought of He Who Walks On water playing for the filth sends a shudder down one's spine, it's also a shame in a way that we didn't take that *spits* Francis money off them for a player who never played again.

I remember that Hull game, it was so foggy you couldn't see the Witton End goal. More cheerfully, if memory serves, the following the season the home game v Hull was the complete reverse ie they went 2-0 up & we turned it round to win 3-2

The Wimbeldon game was indeed Alan Cork after 119minutes of some utterly drab football. The only bright spot was that we didn't have to go back the followinbg week for another go. Just to cap off a perfect night the windscreen wipers on my car were absolutely shagged after the drive down. Trying to find new blades at 11pm in south London was just terrific
-
A home defeat by Coventry in the Cup, late 90s. Up until that we'd always sing "You'll never beat the Villa" to them. Then they beat the Villa. We were crap too.

Bosnich saluting at WHL.

Bosnich saluting at WHL.
A common misconception that Ugo's debut was vs Norwich, he'd actually played around ten times for the club the season before. He'd looked fairly solid in those previous matches - i particularly remember him playing well in matches vs Arsenal and Liverpool. But yes he was shocking vs Norwich as were most of the team in patches that day.

I do not remember this but thanks for pointing it out. In all fairness he really did have a shocker that day!
-
A couple not mentioned-
2-6 v Arsenal in '83.
5-0 at Leicester in '84 which was a 11am ko for some strange reason.
Finally getting relegated in '87. What made it worse for me living down in Bournemouth, was, it was the same day that they got promoted to the 2nd division. Cue, all my mates being less then sympathetic with comments like 'at least you can see them down here next season'.
Dark days indeed!!
-
Leeds in April 95. Carlton Palmer got the only goal of the game at Elland Road and I think it was in the last few minutes. I remember seeing the little piece about it on Final Score and the voice-over ended with something like 'It'll be a miracle if Villa survive' or similar. I really, really thought we were down that day and I went up to my room and cried for about twenty minutes.
-
Going down to the old 3rd Division in the early 1970s.
Losing on the opening day of the 1979-80 season to newly promoted Bristol City.

Then the Saturday after Liverpool came out at Villa Park wearing sunglasses and flip flops and we knew we were alright.
-
Has anyone mentioned losing at home to Division 2 Fulham in the Cup in 1998/99? My young, nine year old mind really did think we were going to win the League that season. It also thought Joachim was better than Dwight Yorke.
-
Then the Saturday after Liverpool came out at Villa Park wearing sunglasses and flip flops and we knew we were alright.
That is the only Villa game I ever thought there was something dubious about.

It was so obvious. I bet most Liverpool players didnt even bother with the Clubs coach after the game they probably went straight to the Airport.
-
I remember a streaker coming out onto the pitch shaking hands with Teale. Both goals were Yorke headers from great crosses from Deano and Staunton. Blisteringly hot afternoon.
-
2-3 against Man Yoo in the Cup.
I think that was my worst ever game watching Villa. I really couldn't believe the way we fell apart. Terrible, terrible game

I'll get me coat.

villa 0 southampton 0, bloody freezing, only 8'000 people at villa park. very very sad sight.
-
v Spartak Moscow UEEFA cup circa `83 ?
Thought we were on the up. Mark Walters was the 2nd coming of Cruyff,
and the UEEFA cup was in the bag. By `88, had learned not to think.

You might be mixing this up with the last day of the previous season - the Holte's last stand when we also beat Liverpool. In '95 though, this was the penultimate game of the season (last home game) and the following week Liverpool did manage to rouse themselves to beat Blackburn and very nearly put the kibosh on Rovers winning the title. Thankfully ManUre fecked-up at West Ham. We hobbled to a 1-1 draw at the already relegated Norwich. Four teams went down that season, we finished 3 points above fourth from bottom Palace. Interesting to note that Arsenal only finished 3 points above us.
As an aside, I think we played Liverpool in a post-season tournament in South Africa(?) in late May 1994 - maybe someone can confirm that.

We did play t hem in South Africa then - at Ellis Park IIRC - but the game in 1994 for the Holte's Last Stand was a lot more difficult than that of 12 months later.

Yep, remember it well. What a weird afternoon that was.
-
The bicycle kick invented
-
Today. Nuff said.
-
Im putting today in there with O`Learys Doncaster debacle.
-
It was worse.
-
At least we aren't Wigan supporters.
-
Villa 0 Southampton 2, coldest I have ever been at a game. Snowed all game, nobody could stand up except for Matt "I Hate Villa" Le Tissier who scored two.
-
0-1 home to Sheffield Wednesday - when Les Sealey (God rest him) dived the ball over the line from Nigel Jemson. George Courtney gave the goal despite being chased all round the pitch by Says Les.
-
I still get annoyed about that. Was sat right behind it front row of Upper North no way did it cross the line!
-
Oldham at home the week before the 1994 League Cup Final. 11 Disinterested Villa players handing the points to a relegation-battling Oldham side. Our only goal came when one of their players needlessly tucked a Froggatt cross into his own net. BFR said after the game, "You heard the booing? I started it."
-
Nothing to do with the team, but infamous skydiving accident at half time of the Arsenal game is 98 was a terrible thing to see,I can still hear the thud ringing around VP. He was the last one to come in,and it was apparent to my novice skydiving eye that he wasn't gonna make it.
On the plus side though was the fact that the halftime got delayed and we came back to win, does the club have any plans for Sky divers on Sunday?
-
Is it too early for 6 0 newcastle and embarressed by rapid twice in a year? Doesnt matter anyway VILLA TIL I DIE!!
-
c t the forest 6 nil game was turners last game in charge
-
The 0-3 defeat on Oldham's plastic pitch in the 1990 FA Cup semi final.
-
Those two horrible horrible Monday nights against that lot. Horrific in more ways than one.
-
Most Shocking moments. The whole conspiracy with the players statement to Doug was a bit shocking. O leary engineering his sacking etc
-
For me my only trip to Vicarage Road, Watford 13 September 1969. Watford were awful and they beat us 3 - 0 thats how bad we were. Some poor lad whose name escapes me made his debut at full back and was never seen again. 19,118 people robbed by awful game. Tickets were 2/6d total robbery.
-

Ha ha, what about losing to Wimbledon at Villa Park in the FA cup around '89/'90 with the goal line scrambled goal they scored. Even at the time watching it, the ball seemed to trickle into the holte end net in slow motion.
-
When we lost 3-0 at home to Wimbledon in the 89/90,it was the Saturday after we beat Spurs 2-0 and if we won, we wouldve gone 5 points clear of Liverpool. Platt missed a pen at nil nil, then they took us apart, our season started to fall apart from there.
-
Blues (rock bottom of the league) 3 Villa (European Champions) 0 Boxing Day 1982
Villa 0 Southampton 0 1985(6) - 8,000 for a league match
Season 86-87 Bottom of the league
Villa 0 Wimbledon 3 1990 - 3 days after outclassing Spurs at WHL and going five points clear at the top. The start of a horrible slump
Villa 0 Coventry 0 1993 - Walking out the ground and finding out Man Utd were still playing time added on against Sheff Weds
-
I would have to say forest 6-0 away in 86 my very first away game and the getting beat by tranmere away in the league cup semi final.
-
My Top 10 Shocking Villa monments are;
1) 03/03/03 - awful in every way imaginable.
2) FA Cup Qtr Final away at Oldham 89/90 - Bernie Gallagher on the wing, our fans fighting each other, Rick Holden playing like Johan Cryuff - a terrible nightmare.
3) 0-3 to Wimbledon at home 1990 - just when you thought we were about to win the League.
4) Turners last game in the 0-6 defeat at Forest - and we thought it couldn't get any worse.
5) The reign of Billy McNeill - Oh it could.
6) Hodge back pass against Norwich City 1987 - Probably the most memorable moment of that season as a hate figure was born.
6) Doncaster in the League Cup in 05 - The night I really hated the Villa and that fecking man who was our so called football manager at the time - oh God I hate him still.
7) The total abandonement of festive cheer in 1982 as we got stuffed at Blose - and I was in the Railway End too.
8) 0-3 against Spurs first game of the 87/88 season - So optimistic, we were tipped to do well by some. After 30 minutes we knew we were in deep, deep shit for the whole season.
9) 0-3 away at Coventry in 1989/90 - Micky Quinn hat trick - kicked off everywhere, how they loved it too.
10) 2-2 home to Blose in 2002 - Stern John in the 3rd minute of injury time, Fistface jumping around on the pitch, bastards.
-
Blues (rock bottom of the league) 3 Villa (European Champions) 0 Boxing Day 1982
I don't think I have been to a game with so much hatred in the air. Even before kick off.
