We wouldn't be replacing Rogers with Garnacho. We'd be replacing him with Manzambi and Garnacho.

Great now all we need is Ings.

We haven't got a tiny squad, don't forget it's 25 man for EPL and, effectively, 22 man for UEFA:

GK (3)
Martinez
Bizot
Gauci

CB (5)
Konsa
Torres
Lindelöf
Mings
Cisse

LB(2)
Maatsen
*Digne* -> (Estupinan)

RB(2)
Cash
?Nedeljkovic? - question marks here over whether Emery wants to give him a chance, if he does then we're fine and with Rowe in the background we've got decent depth.

CM(5)
Kamara
Bogarde
*Onana* -> (COVER)
Barkley
Gomes

LM(3)
Buendia
?Iling-Junior? - I doubt he'll stay but we need to either move him on or give him a chance now.
-> (Garnacho)

AM(1)
Manzambi
-> (BIG GAP)

RM(4)
McGinn
?Guessand? - Who knows what the plans are here but I don't think he's quick enough to fit what we look to be trying to do.
*Bailey* - Hopefully the Hull move goes through to open up some space
Alysson

ST(2)
Watkins
Abraham

That's 27 players so still slightly too big a squad so personally I'd look to move Bailey, Guessand and Iling-Junior on and get in someone who can play on at least 1 wing as well as at 10, taking us to the 25. It means we still need to get cover for Onana as well so 2 signings to come (in addition to Garnacho and Estupinan).

Don't fogrget though we still have the likes of Rowe, Burrowes, Hemmings, Broggio, Jimoh-Aloba to add to it for 'free' so we need to use the kids mor to add depth and not flog our players to exhaustion.

So who is replacing Tielemans, Onana, Bailey, Elliott and Sancho in the squad?

Gomes for Tielemans, Manzambi for Rogers, leaves Garnacho replacing 4 players in the squad.

Townley as ever the voice of reason on this.

He's barely been under a competent manager for the past 3 years, Emery wants him and the lad needs support. I'll give him that until he gives me enough reasons not to.

He's right on the discourse being shite for us over all as well, Gabby especially. We get piss all coverage in the media as it is and you've got him spouting histrionics on the lad before he's even kicked a ball for us.

Buendia took Elliott's role in the squad in September last year and will continue to do so this year I expect.

Gonna go out on a limb and say it won't be too difficult to replace Elliott.

Longer than that, just under  6 weeks. I don't get what the panic is.

Bailey hasn't left yet. when he goes he's someone I said would be replaced with a winger/10.
Onana I said needs to be covered.
Elliott wasn't really in the squad so doesn't need replacing but even so he's effectively already been replaced by Alysson, with Guessand and Iling-Junior also returning from loan.

So no, Garnacho doesn't replace 4 players he's a direct replacement for Sancho.

Good point.

Guessand is back too.

I’m not convinced we do but the football earnings rule means we can’t make more than €60m loss over 3 years which presumably means we need to make a profit this year.

Not quite, it's a baseline of €60m but with another €30m potentially available. As we have no real debt and have had no issues regarding FER we should be eligible for that full addition so €90m is the real cap. Given we haven't struggled with that for the last 2 campaigns it isn't going to suddenly become a problem in this one when our underlying finances are much stronger now than they were in the year that will have just dropped off.

We won’t be eligible for the top ups because it includes things like transfer fees not paid yet. English clubs basically never get the relief. I think we didn’t care about it previously because it was a 3-year period but you make a fair point re last year. I’m just sure I read it somewhere that this was also biting this year.

I think there was a lot of speculation about it because we sold the womens team and the warehouse in the past so "there's nothing left to sell" but I don't think there's much depth to any of the theories that we're in trouble with it. Again it's difficult to be sure because there's absolutely no transparency in what actually gets included, that's why even professionals like Borson don't really know what the situation is.

Iling-Junior is a weird one.  Looked like he was breaking through in to the first team at Juventus.  I'd have assumed he'd slot in as a first team player at the majority of clubs he's been loaned to, but that doesn't seem to be the case.  Will turn 23 in October too, so can't see he has a future with us at this point.

Garnacho on loan does not replace Rogers.

Garnacho replaces Sancho, not Rogers.

And even if he’s wildly inconsistent, it wouldn’t take much to contribute more threat than Sancho did.

Yeah, I agree. My point really is that if we want to get things fully under control we need to stop having first team players who can't even be registered for the squad. I know that technically a few of the players I listed count as U21 but technicalities don't change the fact that we need to get our finances in order and that means not having first team players we pay to sit around doing nothing or that we pay a big chunk towards as they play elsewhere.
