JJ started 15 league games for them, he may go on to do well fot them but that's crap for a 40m signing.

Totally agree. JJ is great when you have momentum in a game. Not so when you dying

Youri @ £35 mill in his prime years is a steal.

If he's 29 on a five year deal, I'd say probably 4 of those 5 years are not in any way his prime years.

John McGinn will be 32 this Oct and doesn't seem to be getting any worse.

All depends on how he looks after himself. Youri doesn't have a reputation for being a party prat as per Grealish, so there is that.

Tielemans has played more games tham SJM despite being nearly 3 years younger.

His game has never really been about expending too much energy and chasing his own tail in midfield though.

First five yards are in the brain, and all that.

He was good for us especially on a free but I sure wouldn't want to be signing him on that contract even if we could afford it comfortably. It's the kind of stupid signing Bruce or MON would make and then wonder why there was no more money as they'd spunked it on milk bottle players.

As I said earlier in this thread the release clause diminished by £18m each year.  Hence even at £54m last year other clubs were reluctant to pay it.  £36m this year seems okay but he will be hard to replace.  Five year contract aged 29 though? Blimey crack on.

Milk bottle player? The fella can thread a pass through the eye of a needle and he'll do it at Old Trafford every goddamn fortnight next season.

You don't get your money back from a milk bottle.

One for the kids there.

Reports suggest Joao Palhinha is travelling to England to finalise a loan move to Villa - medical booked apparently. If so, this is a good move.

There's also the Emery factor. Emery got the best out of Tielemans. Can he do just as well under Carrick (and whoever follows) or is he going to be another Doug?

I think with Mbuemo, Cunha and possibly Rashford running ahead of him, he'll does just fine for them; bastards.

I get all this, but if you want an oven ready international mid field maestro that would slot into a top premier league first team, who’s 29 years old.

Casemiro was 30 and cost £60 million (crazy I know), Fabhino £40 mil, Palhinha £47 million.

£35 mil nowadays gets you a Guessand, or a young hopeful maybe a final year of contract player.

We've made more profit than if we'd bought and sold him at his market value.

We have and they’ve also got a bargain as far as they are concerned, with their business model. Massive loss on the pitch for us though and expensive to fill.

The thing is, we got him on a free. The release cause had undervalued him, but it’s just one of those things. Though since nobody came in last season when he was £54m and he’s a year older now, I can’t see how we’ve got massively less for him than he’s worth.

What they’re paying him is irrelevant, but we’d also have to look that it’s one of our biggest earners off the books, and we do have to reduce our wage bill anyway. Our hand’s been forced, but I don’t think it’s necessarily the worst thing anyway.
