Lucas Digne's original contract was up this summer, so he's fully off the books value wise. Any fee we get for him is pure profit.

the residual balance gets spread over the new contract length so not quite right

Nope, it doesn't work like that. Whatever value is still on the books when the contract gets extended gets redistributed over the length of the new deal

Are you sure? I know people have said that, but literally never known any business do that with an asset once it's book value is gone.

No. Whatever was left unarmortised when he signed a new contract gets spread over the length of that new contract.

So, for instance, SJM has a very small amount still unamortised, but his value won’t be fully off the books until he leaves at the end of his last contract (if that’s what happens and he doesn’t get sold before that).

Edit: as the others have said above.

Again, can anyone point me to where this has been shown? And don't the rules specifically say you can't amortise beyond 5 years anyway?

Otherwise, you could offer a new contract every year and spread the depreciation over 10 years if you wanted.

Not saying it hasn't been done, I've just never known a business to do it to an asset.

I’ve got nothing written down, but I’ve heard Kieron Maguire explain it like that multiple times.

I was under the impression for FFP/SCR purposes, contract extensions also extend the amortisation. So there is never really a player with zero value unless they arrived on a free.

e.g. Player signs a 5 year deal at £10 = £2m per year amortised. After 3 years his value is now £4m with 2 years remaining on original deal. If he signs a 2 year extension at that stage, yearly amortisation would then become £1m per year for the remainder of his new contract.

The business of football makes no sense whatsoever.

Extensions: If the club extends a player's contract (e.g., from 2 years remaining to 5 years remaining), the remaining transfer book value is spread over a longer period, which temporarily lowers the annual amortization cost. However, the player is almost always rewarded with higher wages, inflating the overall wage bill and pushing the 70% SCR limit.

If we can get Manzambi and Bregvall in - two young internationals - and we keep Rogers, McGinn, Onana, Buendia and Kamara, we're in decent shape for next season, aren't we?

Bergvall would be an ideal long-term Tielemans replacement, and if we kept everyone else we'd have successfully lowered the average age of the midfield by a significant degree. Spurs may need to shift someone given the options they have brought in.

I'm not seeing either Manzambi or Bergvall as any kind of deep lying playmaker like Youri is. Wharton is one that stands out as very similar but we aren't going to be able to get anywhere near a deal for him.

Yeah Bergvall isn't clever or intelligent enough with the ball to pick out someone between the lines like Youri did.

We'll replace Tielemans and I reckon we'll just wait for Onana as there's enough around to get us to the business end. As long as Kamara starts in the league that'll be fine. Lindelof has proved more than capable too.

So replace Tielemans and Digne. Have a feeling there will be another sale...not Rogers. Someone older. Konsa? Was there any substance to Mbaye? I'm gagging for that to happen. He looks quality. If it did the attack is sorted.
