Back when Bury FC were a football league club and just prior to their financial collapse, we had a player who regularly came in to the school where I was teaching to do coaching sessions with the kids.  I had a conversation with him about this and he said that many players in the lower echelons tended to base themselves in Greater Manchester/West Yorkshire as there are plenty of clubs within commuting distance.  He subsequently moved to...
