Magic number to Chelsea now 9. Could be 6 tomorrow.

Brilliant result. Win tomorrow and it's all but over. If we can get things wrapped up ready for the Europa League battle then this could be such a memorable season.

Fernandez was very good. I thought a draw would have suited us more in that we want 3rd place. We’ll just have to score 9 tomorrow.

That's a great result for us.

Yes, I get the 'we want to finish as high as possible' argument, and I empathise with it, but the difference between 3rd and 4th, to me, is nothing more than a shrug of the shoulders. Even the difference between 4th and 5th is now a bit 'meh'.  But the difference between 5th and 6th is potentially catastrophic, so ANY result that keeps the team in 6th (whoever they are at the time) as far away from us as possible, is a great result to me.

Having Chelsea 3 results away from us, instead of just 2, is also a massive milestone.  After tonight's result, if we can win 2 out of the next 6, they would have to win EVERY remaining game to overtake us. (Well, technically they could do us on goal difference if they win 4 and draw one, IF we were lose the other 4 games).

Two wins and a draw from our last six games and they need to be perfect to the end of the season to go above us.

Tonight was huge.

True. And all fair points because of our finances. But we should be looking up not down.

Absolutely. Third would be smashing, for the warm, fuzzy feeling it would give. But fifth is still completely fine.

Let's sew up the latter as a priority, then win a trophy, then stress about the difference between third and fifth.

Villa legend Joe Cole looks a bit distraught.
