I think that the Ref/VAR got the incidence correct.

Just because a player is fouled, doesn’t mean that he gets a free pass to foul another player.

The penalty, it's one of those I'd be annoyed to see given against us, and also annoyed to see not given for us. The complicated thing at the end, they got it spot on and well done to them.

As mentioned, VAR made the correct call, Ref made a fucking shit one. Maybe he decided to "wait" for the ball to cross the line so VAR could make it but he also had the ability to still call what the foul after and let VAR overrule him.

Macmanaman routinely calling David James "legend" - is that the same David James who was nicknamed "Calamity" James and also cost us a cup final??....

That’s pretty close to qualifying as legendary. Albeit for the wrong reasons
Extremely.

What cost us the cup final was not attempting any attacks whatsoever, with players like Merson and Carbone at our disposal.

(Sorry, got here late and am catching up)

The refs have an incredibly difficult job
They need all the help they can get
Does anyone believe VAR is helping them improve?

It certainly helped them make a correct decision today
Well there’s the rub I don’t think it did. VAR is becoming a crutch and downgrading on the pitch decisions. It was never intended for that purpose.

The penalty was an easy decision and the correct decision. Ball in play, keeper hacks down attacker, stone wall pen. “Ah but the ball was going out, common sense should tell you that the attacker wouldn’t have got near the ball” my mate messaged me. Don’t matter, it’s in play when the offence is committed, doesn’t matter what happens thereafter.

Yeah. I have totally changed my mind since posting earlier. They got it right.

See also pretty much every penalty Harry Kane has won against us, too. Ball going out, make contact with keeper, dive, job's a good'un.

Is your mate right?

I didn't think contact alone was enough to award a penalty and also the player needed to be in control of the ball.  I haven't seen this specific incident, but curious what the rules actually state.

I think you are confusing penalty with a DOGSO red card. The latter looks at control and direction of ball to decide if the offence is a red card (if outside the box. If inside the double jeopardy on whether it was an attempt at the ball or the man comes in). But Alysson came charging out and took out the player without even getting near the ball because Cherki poked it past him. It would have been a foul if it was right on the touchline and the ball was going out for a throw, the type given when another player is sheparding the ball out and gets kicked by the oppposition when they are trying to win it.
