After next Saturday there could be no pitch at all and a wrecking ball machine on it.

But we aren't knocking the stand down are we?

It would be amazing to broadcast the game in the stadium bit like in the 90s

Bloody hell that is a stark reminder of why CL football is so important

It is, but it also shows the importance of doing well in the Europa. If we win the final, together with the extra gate receipts etc our earnings won’t be that far off what Newcastle made this season, and the performance points (or whatever they are called) boost by doing well will shift us up a few brackets next season, so we will make even more than we did last time we were in the CL - as long as we get there that is.

"Why I hate the Guardian"  episode 5356.

Was there a similar article last year when Spurs and Yanited were in the final?

Does he know that Spanish clubs won 9 out of 14 of these competitions between 2010 and 2023 (3 English, 1 German and 1 Portuguese), with three cases of consecutive wins, one of which was Sevilla x3 (hai Unai)? Two consecutive English winners, potentially, for the first time since the early 70s and that's the article?

Complete slop.

Good point. Also worth factoring in the rise in PL broadcasting cash resulting from the number of Sunday games we’ve had televised live.

Well we are closing it now rather then leaving it open so a lot more work will be carried out then initially planned which means prep work as well. A week delay at the start could end up in a 4 week delay by August.

Whilst there may be a point there a) it's hardly news that the Premier League income dwarfs the other leagues b) this was more pertinent last season when the 16th and 17th placed teams were duelling it out, and I don't recall similar pieces then.

Just happened across that and laughed.  It’s wrong that English teams win things now it’s not the usual suspects.  They should come up with a rule that makes it harder for clubs to spend the money they have.  They could call it financial fair play or something.

Fucking rubbish coverage of any team other than the scab 6, whose women’s teams seem to get a bigger platform than most PL sides.

Freiburg lost to Hamburger SV today. They didn't want fries with that.

Thanks to the German season finishing next weekend and all teams having to play at the same time, Freiburg will play on Saturday afternoon so we'll have had one more sleep than them in the run-up to the final.

French referee François Letexier named for the Europa League final between Aston Villa and Freiburg on the 20th May in Istanbul. He'll be assisted by Cyril Mugnier and Mehdi Rahmouni, with Jérôme Brisard (FR) on the VAR. François Letexier has never officiated for an Aston Villa game. His record with Premier League clubs is 17 games, 10 wins from English sides, 3 draws, 4 losses. He was in charge for the UEFA Supercup final when Man City won against Sevilla FC in 2023/24 after a penalty shootout.

Uh-oh, red card for Martinez in the first 10 minutes.
