If you're looking at west ham to find a missing piece of the jigsaw surely it would be Bowen? Fast direct goals.

As for Bailey, he came into last season as our form player and with a CL campaign to negotiate I don’t think Unai would have entertained thought of selling him.

I think he would, because he's pretty much always worked at clubs who have had to sell players.

I can't see us signing Paqueta and Ascencio, surely it would be one or the other, and then, as I don't see much difference in ability, then the latter would make far more financial sense.

Strange times.

We've just announced an exciting ground extension
We're in Europe for the third year running.
Our manager has won it 4 times already
Our kids did the Youth Cup and League double.
With 32 hours left in the window, we look to have held on to our most influential players.
We've shifted out most of the deadwood.

And yet we're all as miserable as sin.

WHY?

Because we've had our hands tied by PSR/SCR?

BUT

It's not as if we didn't know what those rules require financially, so how did we end up in such a mess???

We’re not in a financial mess (ala Leeds, Portsmouth etc). We’ve achieved more, more quickly than we expected which means that we’ve had less time to abide by the UEFA rules than we probably expected.
And without the “mess” that we’re in, it’s very likely some or even most of your list wouldn’t have happened.
It’s swings and roundabouts tbh.
The rules aren’t fit for purpose but they are what they are and they’re stifling us. That’s the bottom line. This season will be a reset and I expect next season will see a bit of a clear out and turnover of players. What we need from this season is to get some form of Europe and decent cup runs to ensure that turnover is to a high calibre of player. But that will be tough

What we need is to achieve something by winning a bloody cup. The biggest disappointment of our recent rise is the fact we have bugger all to show for it. This reset season is basically just us selling players and making the squad less competitive. It’s a step back, without two steps forward.

Our current strongest 11 when everyone is fit are still a majority of players signed under Bruce, Smith and Gerrard. The time to blindly follow the current set up is when their signings make up the majority of a successful starting 11.

Worth noting the current set up has a transfer surplus which I doubt the previous regimes could boast.

For me the jury is still out. A transfer surplus is impressive but the under utilisation of Malen, Maatsen, Guessand does justify questions about how well aligned the policy is.
And the improve improvement in the “old” squad’s performance post Emery needs to be taken into account. We will have to utilise Malden more this season and Guessand is still unpacking his bags.

They’ll be dancing in The Streets of San Francisco if he plays tonight.

I really don't think Unai would have said anything about getting 2 to 3 players in, if it wasn't happening.

Marco and Jhon to knock-us out of Europe in January when we play them in Turkiye.

I agree, he'd be our best player but if they tried to sell him, Danny Dyer would take Karen Brady hostage.

Imagine the atmosphere drain if we get there tonight and Emi / Ollie or Morgan aren’t in the match day squad….thought it did similar at Wembley when Rashford wasn’t in the squad.

On the flip side announcing a new signing to the crowd before the game can have the opposite effect.
