True, though difficult to compare like with like as their arrival also coincided with us having a settled defence for the only lengthy spell that season.

I do think without a couple of quality attacking options we will struggle.

Not being patronising but i am sure the club and Emery knows this - the main moves will happen closer to the deadline as teams become more desperate  - including ourselves.
We need the domino effect to kick in which will start a flurry of moves in and around our restricted budget levels

You take out Rashford and Asensio from last seasons side and we were struggling around 9th/10th.  Without any further first team signings I think this is where we will end up again.

Unlikely we will be signing players with their profile and certainly not their wages this summer.

However, I don't think its all doom and gloom.  For example,  R&A pushed Malen and Bailey down the list and bumped Rogers to the wing.  If those three improve a small amount then we probably only need one new player in attacking positions.

For context, its also worth remembering the uproar in January when we signed Rashford.  Only six months ago we were in crisis yet it turned out relatively okay.

Again, I'm not so sure your first point is all that true. They did give us competition at a time we were struggling but down the stretch Asensio gave us nothing and Rashford was injured. I think their individual contributions have been overstated.

We definitely do need to add proven first team quality to the squad to stay in top 6, in complete agreement there. Ideally a player more tactically flexible than Asensio. Somebody capable of playing on left, at 10, with exceptional close control to support quicker transitions.

I tend to agree.  I certainly dont think their performances warranted the amount of press attention they garnered. Rashford especially was under an unfair media microscope, where he was either amazing or the devil, with nothing inbetween.

They provided a significant boost to the squad which also enabled more rotation and freshness.
Currently we are going into the new season light and a few inevitable injuries could seriously undermine our situation.
I am pretty sure we will see some movement though, once the transfer wheel starts turning.

It’s all a bit depressing really.  Takes me back to the days when Mark Fletcher was telling us our only signing was going to be Kevin Phillips.

It was probably the cup competitions where they had the biggest impact.

I do think without a couple of quality attacking options we will struggle.

If we keep Watkins and have Malen as back-up then we should be OK for strikers for next season at least.  If we stay with the same formation, then we do have options in the number 10 position.  It could be time for Rogers to be given the responsibility of that role, but we also have Tielemans and McGinn who can play there.

It's just that attacking right side position which needs addressing.  I don't want to see  Rogers out there again, Malen can't donthe defensive side of things in that role and we need to move on from Bailey.

If we are shopping in Aldi why not the fellow from Ipswich that’s been touted for a move this summer? Right winger I think.

Edit not Philogene.

If the money allowed I’d go for Dibbling.

We’d need to keep Bailey as dibbling is still a baby. I doubt we could afford the wages of both. That’s also before we negotiate Southampton’s asking price down from £80m
