There's always been something sort of plasticky, gimmicky and manufactured about Crystal Palace. I've no idea how old they are as a club, and can't be arsed to google, but they always come across as a bit of a modern era (in football terms) thing.

Even their 'big' rivalry with Brighton is laughably fake.

Palace as we know it are 'recent' but their roots are before we existed.

Disappeared for 30 years from 1875-1905, though.
