Players out
« on: January 31, 2025, 07:11:01 PM »
I know we all want players in but…. Jaden, Diego. Buendia, Durán out - one year ago all players we were happened to have - are we ok they’re gone?  FFP is the reason I’m sure, but in the past good teams would let them go when they needed to not when they were forced to

Maybe bring a little PSR reality into the scenario and look again at 11pm on Monday night

The experts always say the January window is a bad time to buy.  Conversely does that make it a good time to sell?

Maybe opportunities have arisen that were too good and we've used them to create headroom for future windows.

Carlos and Buendia weren't good enough.
Jaden wasn't improving as needed and the money was too good to turn down.
Duran was a pain in the arse and we've made over £50m in profit on him.

It looks odd to have so many leave in January but only Duran is any major loss (assuming we buy a couple of players).

Also point of order - the basis of January being a bad time to buy is pre what PSR has done so who knows now. We did alright last year.

PSR - where are we thus far?

Out
Philogene    £20m
Carlos           £9m
Duran            £65m

In
Malen          £21m
Garcia           £6m

Net income  £67m

Champs League (thus far)

Participation fee  €18.6m
Prize money          €32.7m
Value pillar            €19.5m
TOTAL                    €70.9m = £59.6m

£67m + £59.6m = £126.6m

Plus additional gate receipts, commercial income and sponsorship bonuses.

We should be able to do some wheeling and dealing.

This isn't quite right because the costs for the ins and outs don't work like that for PSR.

Philogene is £8-9m positive.
Carlos is break even.
Duran is around about £53-54m positive.

Malen and Garcia combined are about £6m a year over their contracts so we positive to the tune of something like £56m for premier league PSR right now.

For Uefa it's all about wages and, with Buendia included, right now we've taken something around £200k a week off the wage bill.

Oh for the days when we discussed the merits of 442, parking the bus and goal hanging.

We need a degree in economics to follow football now.

We desperately need players though. Today's line-up will emphasise that. The injury ravaged defence is wafer thin. A new striker and centre back are required to replace Duran and Carlos. PSR rules are ridiculous.

Second sentence is cock-on, I think. We've responded to opportunities with a view to the future.
Jaden - I don't see how he will do any better with Ipswich or improve them, but £20m was an opportunity to recoup some money.
Carlos - clearly not an 'Emery player' and not good enough when called-upon.
Buendia - win-win: if he gets his mojo back he may become a player again for our next season; or, he gets offloaded in the summer.
Duran - make money and remove a negative force in the squad.

I’m ok they’ve gone.

If we don’t get another CB in then it may be a mistake letting Carlos go.

Still a couple of days left of the window.

It might look like we have taken a gamble because we have so many injuries at the moment but had this business been done and those players were fit, it would look very sharp business indeed.   I also think that Emery has got fed up with some of the players and wanted a bit of a clear out.  I don't blame him at all for that.

All players who didn’t get many minutes though.

I’ve got no problem at all with the players who’ve gone, for various reasons.  We just need some other players in, to state the obvious.
