150th Anniversary game
« on: December 29, 2024, 07:50:27 PM »
Bit of an odd choice for me. Against West Ham United on a Friday night in the 3rd round of the FA Cup. Being promoted a lot by the club. But isn't it a year too late and/or has something to do with the anniversary of our first fixture?

Even my wife asked me about this game, she must have seen an advert on Instagram for it.
All seems off and a poor choice for me. Unfortunately, I won’t be attending.

I can think of another reason this is a bad idea.

We'll probably field a 'weakened' side, go on to lose, and then it'll be endless "Why the fuck did Heck choose this match, he should have known it had potential for being a limp cop-out nothing line-up"

And the people saying that would be right. This is a really stupid decision - you've basically got the whole fucking season to choose a match, and if it is supposed to mean something, why go for something weird like this? Let alone risky in terms of how it will look if it goes badly.

It's to signify how much the game has changed in 150 years, in 1874 the FA Cup was the only show in town. In 2025 you get to watch us chuck our place in the competition away for the umpteenth season in a row.

To be fair, in the 1873/74 FA Cup, six teams didn't even bother their arses turning up for matches, so maybe not that much has changed after all. 🙂

Back to the future then!

Same. I feel I should make an effort and go, but I simply cannot be arsed.

The Centenary game was a friendly. This is a step up from that at least.

I would guess he’s looked at it and thought, beginning of Jan, weakened team (as you say), everyones skint, games on late on a Friday and on TV….lets package it up as the 150th anniversary game to try and get a few more punters through the door.

Take all the generations of history and meaning, all the lives of players, staff, supporters that have been wrapped up with the club and box it up to try and get 30k fans for a cup game against West Ham.
History as an advert, sums him and his philosophy up really.

I think they will take the game seriously based on the anniversary  celebrations

This has been handled appalling. 2024 was our 150th anniversary so why wasn't a prestigious friendly arranged pre season? They've left it until January 2025 which kind of messes it up and they've chosen a freezing cold Friday night game against West Ham instead? Why? It stinks of Heck trying to get some extra bums on seat's. It's a massive milestone for the club that has been reduced to a half hearted to a tacky attempt to put a few extra bums on seats. It hurts me to say it but I'll be missing this on a point if principle.

An alleged celebration game shouldn’t be played when significant numbers of season ticket holders are either not in attendance or have been displaced to give seats to opposition fans.  It is 100% playing on peoples emotions of not wanting to miss out to sell tickets.

Think you may be disappointed in that view when the first name on the team sheet will be Olsen

Pretty much mirrors my opinion.
