Worst match I’ve seen for some while. Much sterner tests to come after our kind run of fixtures. Apart from Arsenal, we’ve played no one of note really in the league. At the end of the season I’d be amazed but, pleasantly surprised if we are anywhere near top 4.

Unai has only had one other 0-0 in the league with us. He's been here 18 days short of two years.

I was pessimistic pre season but now we've started playing I'm feeling really good that we haven't dropped off from last season. Surprised to hear negativity, even after today's drab showing.

We are competing for 4th. And in a year we are in the CL that’s going to be tough. But our challenge across the rest of the season is to be better than Chelsea, Spurs, Newcastle realistically.

Buendia should of come on for Rogers who was ghastly today

What game were you watching?
I actually agree with Tim, I thought Rogers was really poor relatively. Some great runs, but poor decision making and poor final touches. However, I don’t agree that Beundia should of started, too soon for him.
The reality is, ignoring long term absences like Mings and Kamara, we’re still down McGinn, Ramsey and Onana today, plus losing Konsa and a clearly half fit/three quarters fit Bailey. Even Just McGinn and Ramsey would of made a massive difference today.
Frustrating performance and result, but no matter who we’ve played, 7 league games and one defeat,  plus 2 champions league wins and a carabao cup win. Its really not a bad start to the season at all.

Exactly - this.  Or at least qualifying for the UCL - which might include 5th.  It will be difficult as you say.

So far at least there is nothing overly special about Newcastle or Spurs. Chelsea have European competition also and they have a good squad. But a lot of players to keep happy that cost a lot of money. I still trust Emery over Howe, Ange and Maresca.

I like the BBC headline:
Manchester United earn battling draw at Aston Villa.

Frustrating to drop 4 points to bottom half teams.

Yep, the top three are already pulling clear. I said at the start of the season we were in a mini-league with Chelsea, Spurs, Newcastle and Man Ure for a battle for 4th. From what I’ve seen so far I reckon 5th is the worst we’ll finish.

Oh, and I think we’ll go deep in the Champions League.

With that level of battling performance - even if they are woefully short of quality - plucky Manchester United may just stay up.

It’ll take some effort. And they’ll need to carry their own plank of a referee from game to game like they did today.

But they might just do it.

Before we slash our wrists, let’s look at some of these beauties from last season:

“I feel like the Villa that starts the 2024/25 season will be unrecognisable in the way that a recently relegated team is because it's had to flog all of its stars, the difference being it'll be because we probably won't be able to offer Champions League football.

“We have totally fucked it now.

We are ten matches from the end of the season and will be playing 30% of those matches without our captain, who plays in a part of the field where we are already decimated.

Not only that, we are playing badly and have been for ages now, just putting in the odd good 45 minutes here and there. Even when we manage a good half we then keep on having an absolute stinker of a second.

We are absolutely fuxked with injuries and have a difficult run in. The next three matches are all tricky, and I can honestly see us losing them all.

I think we will finish sixth, which will be fucking devastating after the expectation of the first two thirds of the season.

Genuinely woke up this morning feeling exactly like I did after that Stoke match, that is how bad this is. Gifting three points to our closest rivals on our own ground and throwing in an eight GD swing.

Fucking hell, I hate football.”

“Yesterday was pretty fucking terrible, and it's gut wrenching to look at the table and see where Spurs are after tonight.

Yeah yeah yeah lots of football to come, but turn the tables around and if we were ahead of them with a game in hand, we'd be cock-a-hoop.

We've absolutely blown it. We're playing poorly, too, at a time when Spurs are starting to fire more consistently.

Gutting.”

That Evans getting a 10 minute live interview after the game before getting the POTM award was laughable. Then their manager got a minute before Sky moved onto the next match. Absolutely mental really; look how well the underdogs did.

A pensioner got man of the match, it's a story. What could they have said about us?
