Result aside, that was not nearly good enough.

73% possession, 17 shots, 8 on target. We're iffy defensively but to say that isn't nearly good enough is utter nonsense.

Agree. It’s a ludicrous statement - though if we defend like that against Bayern ….

I’ve been worrying about that ever since Emery seemed to fall out with Carlos. I feel like we need to have a game where we bed in our big game defence from last season - Konsa, Carlos, Torres, Digne.

My ratings from today:

Emi 1 5.5 The usual jetlagged post Argentina performance. Who cares? We love him

Dirk Bogarde 6 not a lot wrong, he’s growing into the part. His runnng style looks a bit awkward, but doubt that will be a problem.

Digne 8 Superb and assured

Konsa 7

Biff Bang Pau 6 Brilliant on the ball, weak off it and bullied by DCL, who was a constant threat today to be fair.

McGinn 6.5 Looked odd on the  wing, but did well

Onana, the Polyglot 5 Dreadful mainly but did have a big hand in the first
goal. Had an off day, but I’m impressed with him as a player and a person so far.

Ramsey 6.5 With Digne, terrorised Everton’s right flank in the first half but thought he faded in the second

Rogers 6.5 What an entertainer. Tried to beat one too many players though.

Tielemans 9 Just magnificent. The equaliser will be seen as a Harrison error but the pass was so good he was at full stretch.

Ollie 8 The first goal was not spectacular but he outjumped a taller man brilliantly. Superb.

Subs

Barkley 8 Excellent, added poise, composure and wisdom
Maatsen 7 Good again
Duran 8.5 A maverick. We need them in life.
Emi 2 6 Welcome back!
Philogene 4 Nothing personal, he’ll  come good, but was awful.

DCL is a decent player really. When they missed out on Duran, West Ham would have been much better going for Calvert Lewin than that German bloke they brought in.

I said at the time that had we sold Duran then DCL is the type of back up player to Ollie we should have. He’s just injured way too much, but he’s got a lot of talent.

Yeah its his injury record that lets DCL down. Newcastle wwre after him but deal fell through

Nothing beats the McGinn volley vs Sheff Wed. Andros Townsend scored a very similar one for Palace at Man City.

Problem is Calvert Lewin never seems to strng more than 5 or 6 games together without getting injured fir 4 or 5.

Have to say, can't remember a player who's done such a 0-100 acceleration like Duran. He's so talented it's unbelievable.

Durans was up there with SJM against Wednesday but I still prefer SJM goal as I love the sound of the wood .

Still buzzing. What a strike.

Ollie first touch still lacking.

Defence hopeless. I don’t think Konsa and Torres cut it. I’ve had doubts about Onana ever since Dortmund. I don’t see how he fits in. McGinn worked hard but out of position. Roger’s flits in and out.

But Maatsen, Barclay and Duran absolutely outstanding and I wouldn’t grumble at all if you were selected on Tuesday.

Well done Unai!

3 wins out of 4 without playing at our best isn’t bad.
Defensively there’s work to do but we do play some lovely football at times. Watkins off the mark and an absolutely unbelievable strike from Duran who is developing into a top forward.
I thought Barkley did really well when he came on and moved the ball quickly.

To obtain the results we have while not playing as well as we can and coming from two down to win, says an awful amount about the team spirit and will to win of this team. Well done Villa.
