Anyway, very much part of our story and I truly wish him well.

Gary was my first villa hero, I was six or seven when he was at his peak for us.  I hope he recovers quickly and fully.

It's been about thirty years since I last thought about it, but didn't he win something like "European Young Player of the Year" back in or around 1982? I guess it would be a precursor to today's "Golden Boy" thing, but I can't find any mention of it anywhere on the Internet. 

Did I imagine it?

Great, thank you - was beginning to worry if my mind was playing tricks on me.  Some incredible names on that list of winners.  What could have been if it weren't for that knee injury (which I'm guessing could have been treated much more easily these days)

Thought i'd post some non Villa fan comments about Gary, there's loads more as well. Maybe gives those too young to have seen him an idea of just how good a player he was.

There aren't too many players that are so good everyone takes notice of them but Gary Shaw was one.
Although I support Liverpool I still took notice of this incredibly talented player.
Villa fans must have been estatic when they saw him burst onto the scene.

Not part of the Villa family, I'm Liverpool, but I'm also part of the football family & remember Gary very well, what a player he was, I wish him well in his recovery, get well soon Gary

As an Evertonian he was one player I always feared when playing Villa. Hope he recovers soon.

Oh that’s awful news. I loved Gary Shaw, despite not being a Villa fan. He was just brilliant to watch, one of my favourite non-Brighton players. Come on Gary pull through fella. 👊
