Mexican Lions
« on: August 20, 2024, 10:20:09 AM »
Looked for a thread regarding Lions clubs but couldn't see one so mods please move to the relevant place.(And let me know where that is. :) )

Anyway, met another Brummy Villa fan in Mexico City a few weeks back and we are thinking of starting a Lions club. Any advice on how to go about it and things we should be aware of would be greatly appreciated. (Aside from the obvious email the club etc .)

I'd get in touch with and join the North American Lions, as they'll probably have the club's contact details. https://x.com/avfc_namerica

The Cayman Villans are part of it, and go to the annual meet-ups. Next year's is in Charlotte in April. I assume there's a minimum number of supporters required e.g. there' are probably 25-30 in the Cayman Lions Club.

Link below. But it sounds like you need to be up and running (eg have a visible social media presence) first.

Thanks guys. Yeah we are planning to start with the socials and we have good connections with lots of ex Villa players who are willing to do some stuff for us.

Just not sure how to start is all. :)

Best of luck with it, hope it takes off. Always great to know of a friendly bar in a foreign land when there is a Villa game on.

I thought we sent Sexual out to Oaxaca in 2023 to get an Aztec H&V collective primed for weekly gatherings of mescal and Matty Cash chat. Did he get lazy?

I went to Oaxaca in 2020 (and returned a few times). I'm not a great joiner-in of things, including Lions Clubs. I think this accent chap will be a fine representative of our once-great club in Mexico, as long as nobody sounds thick (which they won't, because they speak Spanish, which is hard if you don't already know it.)

I really should have worded my inital post about Alex Scott better.

But anyway, I haven't yet made it to Oaxaca although I plan to very soon. I hear it's incredible.

As a Spanish speaker myself, my aim is to get more people here interested in following our amazing club and there's never been a better time to do it, given our upward trajectory.

Hence my post. UTV

I was only yanking your chain re Alex Scott.

We were due to return to Oaxaca this autumn but we had a pretty tough time in the Caribbean due to Hurricane Beryl last month and we've put everything on hold. It's definitely worth a visit, although I hear there's an ever-increasing anti-gringo sentiment in the city due to Americans buying up all the property and AirBnBing it to other Americans. I don't want to go where I'm not welcome!

I guess the thing you need first of all is enough people to make having an organised group worth it in the first place. Then maybe have a word via social media with people are running other international supporters' groups for some advice? There's a lad called Simon on Facebook who runs the Chicago Lions, very friendly and I'm sure he'd be happy to help. He also helps organise meetings for North American fans to all meet up, which usually seem to be well attended.

The first thing you need is set up the club as un-official, as it needs to be approved by a steering group.

Start by having a social media gathering, do some "meet-ups" for games or any reason - take some pictures, find a name. Also if there is a place that members and new members can meet (local pubs etc.)
