If his wages are covered (as suggested above) a loan back up option would work.
When looking at players value I do think you need to factor in their injury record. He’s just not a reliable 30 matches a season guy.
From AI

The FIFA Club Protection Programme covers matches on the official FIFA International Match Calendar, including friendlies, travel, and training. Key details of the scheme include:28-Day Threshold: Compensation is only payable after the first 28 days of the player's injury-related absence.Wage Coverage: It pays a pro-rata daily salary based on a player's fixed salary.Limits: Payments cap out at a maximum of EUR 7.5 million per injury (approx. GBP 6.6 million or around EUR 20,548 per day) and are capped at a maximum of 365 days.Club Max: Individual clubs can claim a maximum of EUR 80 million per year. While this policy insures clubs against the heavy financial burden of extended wage payments, it only applies to fixed wages and does not cover performance-based bonuses, medical treatment costs, or illnesses.

Wouldn't that (and his salary) be removed from our Uefa squad costs though, assuming he's not registered? So we'd have that much to play with, whether for a direct replacement or elsewhere in the squad? Still shit, obviously.

Yes, this is exactly the point I made earlier.

My understanding is that the cost of all senior players would be used in the calculation, not just the costs of the players in the squad for the relevant European competition.

Every chance that by the end of this season he'll be averaging playing in fewer than half our league games since he joined.

Maybe he can retrain to play In a less combative part of the pitch. Decent height for a goalie.

We get compensation from FIFA do we not? Or do we need to ask Trump?

There's 2 different rules at play. SCR would include everyone (but would be offset by compensation from FIFA) but accounts for commercial income, etc. The bigger problem is the specific limitation in our agreement with UEFA which means the overall value of the list 'a' squad registered for european competition can't be increased. This is the one that had people worried we were going to have to sell someone who we'd rather keep but Onana being out works as us making a ~£30m sale (because it's spread over 3 years) which would be someone like Konsa or Tielemans going.

Again I'd rather this hadn't happened but it does give us a small opportunity to refresh the squad without a sale meaning we can shift the 'value' from CM to the wing where our biggest weaknesses are.
