Villa - Arsenal 89-90

89-90 was the last time we got 70+ points and over 20 league wins from a 38 game season and we beat Arsenal twice that year as well. Great team and kit and call me daft but I loved Villa Park as it looked back then, particularly once the fences came down.
What a player David Platt was. I've got a canvas of him in this kit. That particular week we beat  Man United,  Arsenal and Chelsea - in those days Chelsea were shit so history sure has come full circle.

I still can't believe Derek Mountfield wasn't offside for the second goal but then I remember it was against that obnoxious Arsenal defence.

Virtually the whole Arse team surrounded the ref after that goal.

A shame they didn't throw them out of the league for blatant intimidation of the referee.

My missus watchd it and she pointed out how many times the ref would probably blow the whistle now for some of the physical play you see in the clip. No one lying on the floor clutching their legs dying.

Graham Taylor won three consecutive manager of the month awards, Platty won PFA Player of the Year. Just a marvellous tine to be a Villa fan.

That was 3 days after we beat United at home 3-0 on boxing day....wonderful times.

Rewatching the tape we clearly missed Mountfield at the back when he got injured and the goals - as they did in 1993 - just dried up. What a season that was though. That spell vs Wimbledon and Coventry really did screw us.

Yep, the three centre-back system really went well with that group of players. When Derek got injured, SGT went back to a 4-4-2 which didn't go so well.

Typical of the Great Man, he admitted that he had only come across the 'three' by accident. Most bosses would probably have kept their traps shut, allowing the media to declare their geniuses to the world. Not Graham.

If Platt was in the current team we'd also need Sid to see every single run he made.

A few days after, we murdered Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Every time Tony Daley got the ball there was no-one sitting down at Villa Park.

There's something special about diminutive, pacey players getting the ball out wide, happy to take defenders on. It always seems to get the crowd going.

Just watched it again to see how - look at Winterburn (3), rather than running straight up, he ran at an angle across the back line.

If we beat Man. Utd. Arsenal and Chelsea in the space of less than a week with a cumulative score of 8-1 in our favour now, Sky would go into a meltdown. I went to all three games. Exciting times. The KO for the Boxing Day game was put back IIRC due to the number of people trying to get in. This was only a few months after Hillsborough, so I guess caution was the watchword.
