An excellent read. It’s hard to imagine now the chaos caused by fog. One time walking home from work in Oldbury to Smethwick (too bad for vehicles) I was so lost I ended up going back the way I came. I don’t remember the date nor the opponents but I clearly recall standing on the Holte chanting “who scored the goal” for the Witton to reply and let us know.

What was the cup game at Selhurst Park when it went to penalties and you couldn't see anything from the away end?
I could have just dreamt this; my memory is hazy these days.

no i think you're right - we were behind the goal and couldn't see past half way iirc. Also seem to recall a game on Merseyside where the game was a complete mystery from our vantage point but again, the mists of time and all that.

There were occasions when shunting engines would work the little spur of line that was where Mr Woodhall now sells H and V. On windless days the smoke would drift in thick clouds into the Witton End.  My first game at VP was on one such day.

Yep remember that, couldn't see a thing.  I used to hate going there, I only live in Kingston at the time, but still took hours to get there.

What era was that match in, Scratchins?
I've a vague memory of those sort of conditions in a match against Hull City in the late 60's

I remember going to one of the early Docherty matches in 1969 against Huddersfield.

The game started off okay but from about seventy minutes onwards it was hard to spot the ball in the opposition half.

I can't remember the date, all I know is that if I was standing on the Holte it must have been before 1975 when I bought a season ticket and moved to the Trinity. I've been going regularly since 1959 but started on the open Witton End.

The last epic fog I can remember of any kind was bonfire night 1988 coming back from Old Trafford, was fine at the game and everywhere until we got to Stoke, then it was an absolute pea souper, had to lean out of the passenger side window to guide my brother to where the kerb was.
