Thousands of French football fans are being directed into Birmingham's famed pub district ahead of tonight's clash with Aston Villa. More than 2,000 Lille fans have been told they must head to Broad Street ahead of tonight's Europa Conference League quarter-final first leg.

The French club instructed its fans that no tickets are being issued at Villa Park and in order to collect their ticket they must present a valid ID card and their voucher. City nightlife chiefs said that by creating a designated area for the city's French visitors, the hope is to create a "welcome place" for Lille fans, and that there will be a strong presence from West Midlands Police and street wardens.

The excitement was already building early on Thursday afternoon, with groups of French fans dotted about the city centre, chanting and enjoying Birmingham's many pubs and restaurants. Westside BID said Rosie's on Broad Street has been selected by West Midlands Police and the football authorities as the official place for fans to collect their tickets.
