Another thing we need to bear in mind is that FFP is doing exactly its job.  Teams like us and Newcastle have money to spend but can’t and have been decimated by injuries.  We went into the season light and have had so many injuries to important players.

I am less worried about whether we finish fourth or fifth then whether we get UCL.  That’s the main thing - it would give us a huge financial boost - plus it would be something that I never thought I would see Villa achieve. 

I think to not get UCL would be gutting as it’s unlikely we’ll get another chance quite as good - as Chelsea and Man Utd won’t always have bad seasons. 

I know it seems a bit small time but just seeing UCL at villa park would be amazing and I think unlikely to happen again - at least as long as the game is rigged in the favour of the established UCL teams

I'm the same, getting champions league will be massive for us. I don't care if it's 4th or 5th.

If we don't, we possibly have to sell a player we don't want to, likely strengthening the teams we'll be trying to finish above next season. Chelsea won't be this bad next year.

We won't be this bad again next season either, it's just whether anybody improves and strengthens more than we do. I still think, 9 mad minutes aside, we're capable of getting 4 wins from Palace, Brighton, Chelsea and Bournemouth. Maybe Liverpool of its all over. Next week will be tough, although making that demonstrative twerp cry would be equal parts great and hilarious. That's more than enough for 5th and ought to be enough for 4th.

The problem is it’s been badly devised, should be run by an independent adjudicator with specific guidelines on punishments and, somehow, needs to figure out a way to account for the fact that the horse has already bolted on the Super League 6. That’s the difficult bit.

What a daft spell that may cost us dear, completely in control for all but a 15 minute spell, how we managed to let a team who showed as little ambition as I've seen, score three goals, I'll never know. Utterly inept, and then back to being in complete control.

Well it seems to have been devised to keep the status quo.  Taking account of financial measurement that best suit the established 6 and like you say - only handing punishments to those outside the 6.

It really was designed to maintain the status quo & ensure there is not another Man City buying (cheating) their way in…the fact Chelsea & Newton Heath have imploded is not because of FFP it is because of incompetence on their behalf.  It is definitely run badly and the punishments are desperately weak.

14 of the 20 voted for it because there are a raft of clubs who are happy to finish 7-16th every year and bank the cash….& will vote with the flow.  We were one of those clubs in reality for many seasons

I was thinking the same myself, next season is going to tell us an awful lot about where our ceiling is.

Was also thinking the first part of the season was like a fun rollercoaster for the players, and then as soon as we were talked about in terms of the title race it was like, this ride is too scary, I want to get off.

The thing is we’re treading a much finer line, which is why Champs League is so important. FFP wise keeping our players will be more tricky, and also we aren’t going to be able to spend £100m on a new centre mid which has made a huge difference to their resilience.

After vowing to stay away from the match threads for mental reasons I can see I made the right choice yesterday. Some very rational comments but the toxicity from others just seems to stoke people up. Having watched the game it wasn’t as bad as the comments made it sound and to actually get a point from that situation shows some character. It’s frustrating in the moment to see the team make mistakes but moaning and spitting the dummy out surely just exacerbates it. Somebody mentioned Mark Goodridge?!? The other night who I wasn’t aware of until I google him. I watched and although it did make me smile I also found it quite disturbing that I may act like that when watching.

Anyway after the result I stayed away and let things settle. Things really aren’t that bad considering the progress we’ve made since UE arrived, 4th would be amazing but maybe that might be a step too far with the squad we have. God knows what the comments would be like if we qualified and had a season like Newcastle. I’d gladly take a smaller step forward from last season if it meant we got stronger overall.

That’s fair the only point I’d make it that the smaller step to a stronger position overall is far from a guarantee, especially with the FFP situation. It might be this is the opportunity and if we miss it that’s potentially it. We don’t know, but my gut feel is we need it now to consolidate our position.

That’s fair the only point I’d make it that the smaller step to a stronger position overall is far from a guarantee, especially with the FFP situation. It might be this is the opportunity and if we miss it that’s potentially it. We don’t know, but my gut feel is we need it now to consolidate our position.

My thoughts too. I don't get the smaller steps argument. You finish fourth, play mid week and get a boatload of money, or get europa, play Thursday/Sunday and get less money, and rather than strengthen the team we'd possibly have to weaken it due to ffp. Why would anyone prefer that?
