Shame the stupid boys at the BBC don't know his team's colours. Their obituary says:

Pike was the "stupid boy" (after Captain Mainwaring's constant put-down) in a woolly purple and blue scarf (a nod to Lavender's home team Aston Villa)

It's news to me that he was in Eastenders.

A friend was a few years behind him at school. He said at that age he was a fantastic actor and in one part in a school play it was amazing to see a female character who you could not recognise as your mate Ian. He had to stay on a year to get the exam marks needed for his stage school. What a wonderful legacy that when you are remembered it is with a smile.

My dad had was a barber in Northfield and Pike and his brother were regulars in the shop. We’ve just been chatting about it and he said that when he was in Dad’s Army he’d still come in and that their apprentice at the time was always starstruck. He also said that he was prematurely grey which obviously wasn’t a good look for the part so had to have it dyed.

My Dad did go to Bournville Tech with him but he was a few years older. Ian was the head boy. He didn’t go to any games with him so I’ve misremembered that.
