I thought he was ok after the first pass. Couldn't Dougie be the replacement for Onana?

Dougie can be as much a danger when a defensive midfielder with his fouling right on the edge of the box. There was a reason he is the only player to get a double card suspension under Emery's reign.

He is, but I think in the circumstances now he’s a better player than Bogarde and we need to take a risk.

His brother has just won the Austrian Cup, alongside future Villa signing Modou Kéba Cissé.

Ooh! Well done Modou! He’s supposed to be with us next season isn’t he?

Yep, but this is Villa so we will probably PSR him somewhere.

He qualifies for the home-grown squad position in Europe this season I believe (if he wasn't there last season) so probably worth keeping for that benefit. (IE, any replacement is one less squad member). Still not a starter at the moment though.

It was his first season as a regular squad player at this level, he's doing ok. Certainly enough to warrant another season.

He's a Europa League winner, he's young, he's homegrown, he's versatile, the manager likes him, and he's ours. So instead of slagging him off and dismissing him out of hand, support him and see the good stuff, of which there's plenty.

In any job the younger, inexperienced colleagues are generally not as good as the ones who've been a round a while and knows how everything works. There are exceptions, but they are few and far between.

This lad is doing just fine.

I think he suffered a little crisis of confidence in the second half of the season. It's one thing playing as a peripheral player coming up and developing, but I think he found the added responsibility when Kamara was injured a bit more daunting.

It reminds me a little of Iroegbunam. He had that opportunity to step up, I think also for a Kamara injury, but he just didn't take it. Emery was confident he was capable, but something was holding him back.

I think it's a mental thing for young players coming through, that they get used to the expectation of a being a player for the future, and it's a big transition from that to being comfortable being the player for now who can step up and be the main man.

I think that's what Rogers described in his interview, with the Arsenal game. That was the moment he realised he wasn't a kid coming through anymore, he was there on merit and capable of competing with anyone.

Hopefully Bogarde has that click moment next season and begins to believe.

I’m fine with him having more time. It’s a tough gig getting limited time and filling multiple positions. I do think some of his struggles on the ball were confidence related, but it’s the area he needs to work on most.

Valid points Dogtanian.

Whilst Ramsey may not have had a eureka moment like Rogers' he quickly went from a 'jack of all master of none' to a quality attacking midfielder. I've a vague recollection of a video of players returning from their summer breaks and the manager (Smith?) grabbing his bicep and mouthing "phhwooarr", like he'd bulked up over the summer.

There's every chance Bogarde will do the same.

Playing defensive midfielder must take a lot of mental and physical stamina. Lindelof did a wonderful job there when we needed him most, but even he, a player with years of experience at the very top level, could only cope for about 70 minutes. Lamare is still learning. It makes you appreciate Kamara even more.

Let's face it, at least 90% of defensive midfielders in the Premier League would struggle to hold down a place in our team.
