I think there's a fair bit of overstating how poor we were in the first half going on. We didn't play well but we also weren't conceding many chances and could've scored a couple ourselves before our goal. Their goal was a flukey deflection and the only big misses were the kulusevski one off the post and the Davies header.

As someone said yesterday it was the sort of game we've seen many times before where 1 side huffs and puffs but creates very little and then the opposition step up a level and take the points.

What we got wrong was how we tracked their fullbacks. It looked, to me, like our game plan was for Cash to drop in and make a 5 in defence but got caught between following Udogie or staying wide which left Gil with too much space. Bailey did the same job but better and also exploited the space Udogie was leaving far better. Tielemans for Diaby was a big improvement as well because he held the ball up better which bought our midfield into play in their half.

I thought getting to HT at 1-0, we'd be able to turn it around with a HT Emery masterclass.... Turns out I was wrong, we got to HT at 1-1 and THEN turned it around with an Emery masterclass!

Next 3 league games are going to be interesting. Just hope the fanbase doesn't spit their dummy out if it doesn't all go our way. Just over 12 months ago, we were staring at another relegation battle..... Now, we're 2 points off top spot with a third of the season played?!

Trophies feel inevitable under Unai, and long may he reign!  UTV

Put on SSN at 8am to see what they said of the match. After 15mins of gushing about the ManUre goal y-day… “join us after the break to see what positives Ange can take out of the loss to (checks notes) Aston Vila”.
Nice angle to take, not how well Villa are doing to be 4th and 2 points off the top.

We're fourth at the end of November, which is great for us, but what do you expect the rest of the world to do beyond shrugging?

Jenas has said that we were not that impressive and only just got over the line.

We're just not expected to compete.
The evidence is there that certainly, in the case of Sky, Aston Villa are an afterthought.

That was my take from yesterday.

I dont agree. We were lucky to have only conceded one in that first half but it's not as if it was a smash and grab. We scored two, had one disallowed, Torres and Watkins should have had another one each and we hit the post.

They hit the post and had a few chalked off.

Yeah I thought both teams left a lot of chances out there. If Spurs get credit in defeat, we shouldn’t be slighted in victory.

That's good defending for you.

You're the one citing offside goals as evidence of good play.

They had 18 attempts
We had 15 away from home

It was no smash and grab

although the first half was as bad as people are saying maybe even worse, mainly due to the defence being crap we won’t get away with defending like that every week, missing Mings and Moreno big time
When the game shifts into midfield and attack we come into our own and are a match for anyone as the second half proved

Having goals chalked off for offside is irrelevant when you're playing against a team that is setup to catch you offside.

They had 2 decent legal chances in the first half to go with the deflected goal.

I was arguing within the terms set by the OP.
