Good read. We had a thread here a few years back and Sammy Morgans son turned up to say a few words.

Gents, great to read a few first hand accounts of my dad Sammy's run ins with Mr Wilson. I have to say his memories pretty well match up with all of yours! We went to the replay the other week but unfortunately didn't bump into Mr Wilson. We took a walk to Highbury and this was the first time Sammy had been back since that eventful cup draw.

If any of you manage to locate any footage of this or any other matches from that era then please post as we don't have any of him in a villa shirt.

Needless to say he's proud to have been a Villa number 9, so much so that all the morgans were brought up with claret and blue blood.  He's hugely proud and humbled that he's still remembered for such a memorable couple of nights!

Loved him.  I was at those cup games against the Arse.  Clive Thomas was referee that day at Highbury and I was at the rear of the Clock End where tbf you get a decent view and Thomas made the decision to send Sammy off from his well placed position on the half-way line!  The replay was a sight to behold, Sammy terrified Bob Wilson that night, his fear was almost palpable.

Thanks for posting, a great memory.

I was there.

The sending-off was a disgraceful decision!

That rain-sodden night when we beat the Arse is one of those games that will always stay with me. Awesome atmosphere and a game where the crowd definitely had a massive impact on the opposition's performance.

Incredible night. Bob Wilson was a seasoned goalkeeper who had experienced a lot in his career. However the crowd focus on him and his involvement in Sammy's sending off on the Saturday resulted in a totally jittery performance that evening. One of the defining early seventies Villa nights.

As I posted earlier, I went to the game and had a great view of the main incident.

Sammy was sent off for two bookings. The second one was when he raced onto a through-ball, shot and the ball hit Wilson in the face before rebounding clear.

How's that for a red card offence?

Correct, and my point was Clive Thomas made that decision from inside the centre circle so was actually guessing what had happened, something we all know a referee should never do.  I'm still irate to this day.

I was there at the replay, a fabulous night. I can remember us rushing back home afterwards to catch the highlights on Sportsnight, which I seem to recall was a shortened programme owing to the fact that we were in the midst of the power cuts.

I was at that Port Vale game, 4-1 up and we only drew. Although we were desperate to get out of the division, older Villa fans like myself have a lot of fond memories of those days. Didn’t realise Sammy scored two of Vales goals, was probably too gutted to notice.

I thought he only scored one?
