We all want to compete on all fronts. However we also don't want to flog the players to within an inch of their lives, so while they've all got to get used to playing more games, it's a balancing act of giving the better players rest/giving the back ups game time/staying competitive. It's a hard job, and Emery didn't really get it quite right in Poland. Be interesting to see what he does tonight.

Although Unai says he likes to challenge for all cups, I think our team will be a it lightweight tonight.

Maybe.  The one thing people are not mentioning though, is that Everton will probably also rest some players.  We should be fine.

This will be a huge game for Tielemans if he wants to push for a starting place in the league. He’s had a slow start and has to take this chance, if he plays. He’s looked unfit when he’s played and struggled against Hibs and in Poland.

His record for us in cup competitions so far would seem to indicate the opposite. I hate being knocked out of cups.

Agreed, the line-up tonight might answer a few questions.

Lets worry about their line up when we're a couple of goals up!

I don't know. Personally I felt the line up against Legia suggested we were tanking Europe to concentrate on the Premier League. I thought that before kickoff, nothing to do with the result.

But obviously when the dust settled on that poor performance, and we got a result against Chelsea, and you start thinking about things rationally, I think what it boils down to is that the "right approach" is going to look different from game to game.

The Chelsea result fully vindicated the team selection in Legia

Sure, but I think more than that. Upon reflection, the first game in the group stage of a European competition is probably the right one to be as experimental as possible with your line up. We really shouldn't have lost that game, even with the line up, but at least now we, or more importantly, Emery is in a position where he can say which players need to do what work, which players just need a bit more game time, and maybe even which players are just not going to fit into the system.

We can approach tonight with the idea that player x, y, and z, who played against Legia, need some more game time tonight, or player x can't play in that position, so tonight he gets a shot at redemption in a different one. We can also go into the other group games with a better idea of what will or won't work in terms of balancing resting players and winning games.

It's obviously not the only positive of having extra games to play, but it does allow us a little more room for figuring things out in terms of squad roatation and selection.

Why are the only things that get 'improved' ones that nobody moaned about?
