Upcoming 150th anniversary
« on: August 04, 2023, 05:36:33 PM »
As very few us on here will be around for the bicentennial, do we know what the club has planned for 2024 ?
For the centenary we played a pre season game at VP against Dirty Leeds. There was a special edition programme which inside also had a full reproduction of the very first Villa News & Record.
There was 29k at the game, we lost 2-1. Sammy Morgan scored for us, Chris Nicholl scored an own goal and IIRC Ray Graydon missed two pens.
What are the club planning if anything ? What should they be planning ?

If I were planning it ...

Friendly against Bayern Munich. Make sure it's on TV, anywhere we can get it on TV. Anywhere we can, give it away if needs be. Absolute Villa propaganda fest.

Get a parade of former players, managers, staff before the game. In between, show a Disneyfied version of the club's history, really sell us as basically the club who invented football as it exists today. Fireworks and pyrotechnics and stuff before the game

Half time, get Duran Duran and/or Black Sabbath to put on a show. Something like that.

Thought about this last summer, and my 'wishlist' included
- An excellent manager, and competitive team on the pitch. (done)
- A piece of silverware in 2023/24 or 2024/25, preferably the FA Cup. (looks possible)
- A new and round badge. (was done)
- New North Stand. (on its way)
- A Lion Rampant, as was on the old Trinity, being re-introduced. (probably unlikely)
- Really nice, traditional home and away kits, and a third that is modelled on one of our earliest shirts e.g. similar to what Hearts have done. (we'll see)
- A couple of 'celebration' friendlies against top sides we've faced in Europe e.g. Inter Milan and/or Barcelona. (should be easier now with UE)

And lastly, a bumper '150th Anniversary' paper edition of H&V so Dave W can add to his hefty bank balance. Seriously though, I'd likely buy a few copies.

For starters

Do a better job than the centenary of Villa Park.
Don't include playing Blues.
Don't make a shit homage kit.
Focus on all our history, not just 80-82.
No shit banners around VP that make no sense.
Win the FA Cup.

Wolves?

Aston Brook St. Mary's. And none of that 25th November nonsense either.

Using rugby rules in the first half?

That probably never happened either.

Is that a Peter Morris story? I can't remember.

I went to that game and still have the special edition programme from it.

Nemanja Vidic disagrees - says it inspired him to get into the game.

I agree on 25 November too. I generally fall out with a couple of people on social media on that day.

It's in his book and accepted as fact, but Mr R (who else?) pointed out that how come a team who had never played anything, let alone rugby, managed to stop a proper team from scoring for forty minutes?
