'The onion bag' is my favourite cliché that I absolutely hate.

I know some of you accuse other accounts on here of being run by multiple posters. It feels like a number have handed their login details to Richard Keys, Neil Warnock and the editorial board of TalkSport. The proper-football-man-it's-all-bollocks-just-stick-it-in-the-onion-bag vibes are strong here today.

I guess. But I have some sympathy for the idea that the current trend of stats-based analysis doesn't tell the entire story of the reality - and Danno made a really good point earlier in the thread when he said that anyone involved with stat analytics as a job shouldn't really be putting things down to luck; either the stats are right or you have an opinion.

I'm pretty cynical anyway and get the feeling that a lot of podcasters etc don't really know what they're talking about when it comes to stats and regurgitate figures which are, at best, abstract to what happens on the field.

No doubt the broadcasters, such as they are, are at times approaching the data all arse about tit, but to dismiss the entire concept as nonsense is prehistoric.

I don't disagree tbh but this tifo fella, as I understand it, couldn't understand why xg was wrong and instead put it down to luck, an unquantifiable measure. That isn't analysis, it just seems like he ran out of ideas after the stats didn't bear out events on the pitch.

I think what annoys me most about it though is that he's likely getting paid a shitload of money for this.

I use stats analyses a lot in work so I know there is probably real validity in top level football.
However, i find the whole thing as dull as dishwater and utterly emotionless
Wheres the room for shouting yeeeeesssss with raw emotion on the holte end for a half seen goal, with a fooking clue what elements are xg have been at play.
The irrational emotion is what makes the beautiful game.

Honestly, I can't be arsed with tactical analysis or whatever. It's not that I don't think it's valid or anything, it's just someone else is getting paid to do it, and I can just either watch the game or bash F5 on the H&V match thread and enjoy the fruits of their labour.

Fwiw I imagine it's quite a useful measure if you're assessing midfielders (are they creating good chances?) or defenders (are they preventing the opponents from getting good chances), and probably less useful if your assessing goalkeepers or strikers. But I don't know, and I don't give enough of a shit about it to find out. I certainly don't give enough of a shit about it to listen to someone else talk about it.

Luckily the players do ! He's a bit special though. I'm sure we will have some dips along the way . Whenever a Villa manger is appointed ,I always hope he has a long tenure, as it will mean success for all of us. Early days I know , but he seems so switched on tactically, it's hard not to get excited.

Compared to the likes of Steve Bruce, who probably takes his laptop to PC World so they can show him where to plug the mouse in again.

Excellent - actually LOL

Yes, made me chuckle too, although I'd never bring my laptop into PC World.

Obviously unacceptable in commentary, but during punditry with a broad Louth accent?

Yes, absolutely awful. This is the origin of my irrational dislike of Mason Mount, as I heard him say it once on YouTube.

Petty, I know.

It will probably end up being a tougher game then Newcastle. They have a great home record. As long as we don't lose I'll be pretty happy. Obviously I want the 3 points but it depends how much of a fight we're prepared to go and the ref. I can see a Villa red card, probably Luiz, they're a dirty bunch and we take no prisoners. As you say, 'disciplined'.

I watched the Holy Trinity fella's latest show, and he mentioned how everybody has bought into what Emery is doing. There's no disquiet amongst the crowd about getting f***cking rid of it, we're all enjoying the teasing, that giddy tingle of anticipation as we await the inevitable irresistible surge, the fucking discipline.
