I think we all understand it, Paul. As Lee said, it's how it is used, specifically in that Tifo clip.

I'm not sure everyone does, but I'm aware that post got very long and rambling, which is why I said I'll try to back off now.

The only reason I get annoyed is that it's pretty clear that these sort of stats are playing a huge part in how clubs work now, calling it useless or moaning about stats ruining the game is exactly why useless shits like Bruce have survived so long.

If people think it's nonsense, then fair enough.

I guess, I'd just prefer you to use terms like boring because some of the comments make it sounds like something that's of no value to anyone, and that's pretty clearly not true.

You ridiculed my post that stated a shot that hits the wood work should merit more than a wild swing.  It should if we are going down the route of expected goals as important data. Surely a shot that is the width of the post apart is far more meaningful to data than one that ends up in row Z, yes?

Football is played on grass with goalposts. Not on a keyboard with monitor!!

Don't let Emery hear you say that, he uses keyboards and screens very much in his work, it plays a massive role in his team management by all accounts.

I am sure Emery uses keyboards and screens as it is a lot more convenient than using paper/pen, chalk/board or a calculator.

However, when it comes to a players mentality, attitude, ability, adaptability he would probably prefer to use his own 'eyes and ears' on the training ground or pitch as distinct to contrived calculations/guesses.

Truth is I don't know but would be surprised if he used xg and alike.

I'll just stick to what I think and I think it's nonsense.

I didn't mean to ridicule it and if you got that impression I apologise, I was trying to highlight it as an example of people not understanding what xG is supposed to represent. The stat is about how likely a player is to score from a chance not how effective he is at taking chances.

I suspect you're wrong, he's taken Victor Manas with him to every job for a decade, and has him sat right there on the bench every week. I doubt you'd give an analyst that sort of respect if you didn't find statistics and data useful.

You can do what you like, it's not like you'd ever change your mind about anything.

Would be staggered if Emery didn't know Watkins' xG, for instance. However much importance he puts on it, who knows, but it's a very basic stat to include these days.

He's actually known for using a team of analysts - stats analysts, video analysts - he's very much cutting edge.

He has personalised video content and analytics sent to each member of the team.

Compared to the likes of Steve Bruce, who probably takes his laptop to PC World so they can show him where to plug the mouse in again.

Statistics are rarely the most interesting of subjects but when the merits of one metric are discussed down to the nth degree over a number of days it reaches previously uncharted levels of tedium.

I agree, actual stats and video analysis are important. It is the xg and other guesswork that I find pointless. But that's just me, others may think differently.
