Ferran Torres loan to buy...

Will this be like the year we bought all the Jordans? 🤣

Let’s fucking hope not.

I’m in no way knocking the signing of Pau Torres but in my mind it’s not one that would make other players think, fuck me I want to join Villa now.

His move has got its own thread on the Yanited forum and they never discuss us unless we're playing them. Some of the initial comments...
"Seems like a huge signing that"
"Very good player .. Emery building a good cup team over there"
"Going to be a decent side next year Villa"
"2 weeks of Monchi being their President of Football Operations & he's getting them Pau Torres & reportedly in discussions to sign Chiesa from Juve  He's the king of identifying & getting that Europa level player that can make a very decent side, then sell on for 2 or 3 times the original fee & keep building. Almost like, it's a well run football operation. ::) "

Liverpool fans seem pretty impressed as well.

There was nothing wrong with the Jordans. It was the Micahs, Joleons and - most of all - Tims  (no shade intended there to Celtic fans, Roman Catholics or small people) that were the problem back then.

I wasn’t aware of him being linked to Bayern or Juve as was previously mentioned, not sure why he never moved to a bigger club than Villareal before now. I don’t disagree that the calibre of our signings is greatly improving and it bodes well for the forward positions that need competition.

I read that Spurs were after him a season or two ago and had agreed a fee with the club, but he turned them down to stay where he was. Apparently Madrid were monitoring him at the time too.

Yes, saw that earlier. Apparently he turned Spurs down saying he only wanted to move to a big club.

I don't want to be making him out to be the messiah or something but you have to assume Emery was the attraction for him. Historically we're an important club, but in recent years Spurs have been much more competitive than us, and have had European football regularly. But I suppose unless you're absolutely gagging for a move, they're still not a big club. And he seemed quite happy at home.

I don't know how good the credibility of the links are but Ferran Torres on a loan to buy for 25m euros from Barcelona touted.

Listening to Gregg Evans on the 1874 podcast, he seems to think that we are going to have to sell a few before we can buy again due to  FFP

I heard it too, and felt he was exaggerating a bit, like you’d expect a Stripey to. Dan Bardell (whoever the fuck he is) didn’t agree.

He’s massively wrong. The Jack/Carny and Ings sales have given huge ffp wiggle room. Our big spending window has also fallen off the accounting period.

Im not sure if that can be right - or the club will have to be confident that they can sell.

It would be absolutely bizarre if we used all the cash we have on a centerback - where we are relatively well covered.  We desperately need a some competition / quality at the top end of the pitch.

Our plan there cant be that Watkins will be able to play 50 games without injury or suspension, and that bailey and / or beundia will suddenly find consistent form and good numbers.

Hmm, that's interesting...

We've signed a new shirt sponsor which I believe Purslow said was offering around double what we were getting last season, so an extra £5m?
We've increased ticket prices by around 26% over the last two seasons which would give us an extra £4.5m compared to our last published accounts.
We're due to get over £20m in prize money from finishing higher this season.
Just getting into the group stage of the ECL will net us an additional £6m+ (even if we lose every game and get attendances of 30k at £30 each for home matches which is conservative).
Win three games in the group stage gets us another £1.2m.

So that's like an extra £38m, not counting any other deals the club has done, such as the concerts and supercross, the Castore deal, etc.

Our net spend over the last two seasons is about £42m based on Transfermarkt. We've got several players now beyond their original contract length, so they're no longer depreciating year on year (Mings, McGinn, Luiz).

Can we really be that close? It will be interesting if we are...

I listened to it too. He definitely didn’t say we need to sell before we can buy again this summer (he even clarified this towards the end).

He was though incredibly negative about pretty much everything Villa related, to the point where Bardell (politely) pulled him up on it.

Everyone knows he’s a Bitter Baggie but when it shines through it makes you think there could be someone better covering Villa.

But do you know a lot about him? Not a criticism, as im not expert, but seems to me Bayern were interested and Emery loves, suggests he’s a top player. We weren’t signing players like Torres and Tielemans a year ago, so signing players we couldnt before is bound to get noticed, by yet more players.

I wasn’t aware of him being linked to Bayern or Juve as was previously mentioned, not sure why he never moved to a bigger club than Villareal before now. I don’t disagree that the calibre of our signings is greatly improving and it bodes well for the forward positions that need competition.
I think Bayern wanted him.  I strongly suspect we offered to pay him more.
