European Super Cup 2nd leg 26 January 1983
Villa 3 Barcelona 0 (Agg 3-1)

One of the great nights at VP, we came back from a goal down in the first leg, to beat one of the great European sides. Barcelona were an absolute disgrace that night, they had 2 sent off, if it were today, they probably would have had 5 or 6 reds.

VP was bouncing that night, a goal from Gary Shaw 10 mins from normal time, took the tie it into extra time, then Gordon Cowans' pen was saved, but Sid scored from the rebound and then their goalie took a wild kick at Sid as he retrieved the ball, which the ref never saw, Ken McNaught got the 3rd.

Just realised somebody beat me to it, but it was a great night.

Wonderful night to be on the Holte. Great goal by Gary Shaw as Peter Withe accidentally caught the Barca defender with his elbow and broke his nose.

They remain the dirtiest team that I have seen at Villa Park.

LOL. Talking about stating the obvious, could you imagine worse? ;) Nobody's come even close to that Barca team.

I think it's fair to say that we dished out a reasonable amount of retribution that night. I suspect Barcelona hadn't come across too many teams as rugged as ours.. Great night at Villa Park.

I think it might be my favourite game ever. It was the precise moment all the lies my dad told me - backed by books and articles written before World War I - came true. I knew that the Villa were the original and only biggest and best club in the world. And it was all for a meaningless wooden rectangle.

Well Withe got the elbowing going for the first goal.

Absolutely fabulous experience to be there this was.  Barca were not the team of Pep back then I can assure you.

Extra special as it was my 10th birthday too, you do the maths.

Mine too. I was 12, in the North Stand. Villa Park was so behind the team that night. Equalising with 10 minutes to go. Peter Withe giving them some back. I remember howling with 12 year old outrage  when the keeper kicked Sid, OUR  Sid, into the net after he put us in front, as I called up all the bad words I could think of to hurl at him, and my Dad, bless him, pretended not to hear. Or maybe he was shouting the same. How I loved big Ken Mcnaught when he fronted up to the keeper , then took the piss out of him shadow boxing. Then big Ken scored a third and the roof came off again.

That night, for me, is right up there. A few weeks later we lost to Juve, basically the Italian national team, and I felt a crushing disappointment the like of which I have never, in all my 12 years, felt. And there, in one season , is why I love this club, and why I feel SO privileged to have bene there in those times. But, I genuinely think, they can come again. It's a journey. UTV.

I lent my school mate , who was new to all things Villa (unlike my brother ,cousin and myself. It may have even been his first game) an old Villa scarf ( I really didn't care for, hence my generosity !) . He ended up throwing it on the pitch during the lap of honour , which Peter Withe proceeded to pick and wear round the pitch. I remember an offer in the next game's programme from the club to reclaim scarves tossed onto the pitch. Being young and very foolish  I declined as I still didn't like the scarf. Wished it was in my possession now !
