The only time I wasn't too disappointed was 1988

We gave them a right go
We played well
They were head and shoulders above everyone that season and we were 2nd Tier
They needed 2 quality goals to beat us

The atmosphere was incredible - a sell out even though on the telly, as we used to say. I always see it a ore-cursor to the Bradford game 3 months or so later. The Holte was Bloody Noisy

Yep.

46000 there, which I think was 10,000 more than for the Bradford game in the league.

Low point for me was at Oldham in the quarter final a few years later. Freezing cold night, penned in, fighting each other (and the police) and a good hiding on the pitch too

1959 and 1960 were great disappointments for me.  Two semi-finals one after the other.  I was deeply traumatised to the point that I don't think I've still not got over it.  I was at both.
Those were slightly before my time- I hadn't realised how close we had been to appearing in 3 Finals out of 4.

Was that penalty shoot-out defeat to Wimbledon in 1993 our first ever penalty shoot-out generally? I'm guessing not, probably a ZDS or League Cup game previously. Don't think we've ever been knocked-out in Europe on pens, have we? And also, Statto, are there any English clubs in the whole football league (all 92 etc.) that have never taken part in a penalty shoot-out?

We beat Colchester United on pens in the League Cup in 1979, I think 9-8. After winning 2-0 in the away leg we somehow managed to lose the home leg by the same score.

Anyway moving on. Here it is in all its horrendous misery, 66 years of abject misery, oh so nears, robbed blind, muppet fuckery and how in the hell did we manage to lose that....pick your favourite day of doom....

1967 4th Round L 0-1 Liverpool...Bottom of the table playing top of the table off the park at Anfield with Deakin running the show. That was the first 25 minutes then we reverted to type.

1968 4th Round L 0-1 Rotherham United...Rotherham fans singing The Mighty Quinn.

1969 5th Round L 2-3 Tottenham Hotspur...Reward for the epic win against Southampton. Game on the Saturday was postponed. We pushed them so close.

1971 1st Round L 1-3 Torquay United...I remember sitting on the supporters coach thinking its a long way home, it was.

1972 1st Round L 0-1 Southend United...Tommy Hughes had a stinker in goal and never played for us again. By the next game we had signed Jim Cumbes.

1974 5th Round L 0-1 Burnley...A bad day in The Peoples Republic of Bob Lord. Bruce Riochs last game.

1980 Qtr Final L 0-1 West Ham United....Skinheads with nazi armbands in the Villa end. Somehow made it home unscathed.

It's incredible to think that was the only capacity crowd we had between the Stripeys in 1991 and Spurs in 1993.

Won't 30,000 or so have the option of a freebie?

I remember a conversation with you Mr Woodhall some years ago when you told me that was the first post League triumph sell out. Assume you mean Albion  81.

We must have been near sell out post promotion to Liverpool and ManU pre Spurs in 1993.
