Aston Villa shares
« on: October 27, 2022, 07:12:37 AM »
I miss owning just a fraction of the club. Obviously Lerner bought all the shares up with his takeover in 2006. Now they're in NSWE's hands. I'm certainly no expert, but could the club somehow revive share ownership for the fans?

Never sold mine - the Ltd company share certificate still proudly framed & displayed at my dad's house.

They were never a financial investment & didn't agree that anyone should own 100% of the club, then or now.

Theoretically they could but they won’t.

I'd have thought a share issue would be popular with supporters?

It might be, but what would it achieve?

I had a single, token plc share which Lerner was entitled to compulsorily buy from me but which I kept hold of out of principle. A futile gesture but I have a clear conscience at least. I’ve still got the share certificate in a cupboard somewhere

Not ashamed to say I made a good few grand from selling mine. Never got the certificate though, which is a shame.

Me also. In a drawer in the spare bedroom. Stumble across it accidentally sometimes looking for other paperwork from that war and brings a smile.

It's strange how many people disagreed with the idea of selling to Lerner when there were posters on here (well, one) threatening anyone who didn't. There certainly wasn't much enthusiasm not to sell.

Blimey! I guess they weren't aware that once a buyer gets 90% of the shares in a takeover they can force everybody else to sell?

I think the idea from our one-man taskforce was to intimidate anyone who didn't want to sell, up to the point the 90% level was reached. Incidentally, Lerner didn't get to the threshold required for the deal to go ahead in their agreement but was close enough for Doug to agree to sell.

One £5 share issued in 1969 gave you admission to the annual general meeting. The AGMs and EGMs in the 1970s would fill the Witton Lane stand and were something else. Considering all the boardroom upheavals it's amazing we made such progress on the pitch. Ron Saunders said something along the lines of you don't need to go looking for trouble at Aston Villa because it will come and find you anyway.

Absolutely fascinating - I haven't seen footage of that before.
