The club need to be looking at who they're going to get after Unai.

If we get that one right then we will solidify our place in the top four or five of the PL.

We can't afford to go back to a Gerrard type appointment. It has to be another top manager. Hopefully Unai will leave us in a place where we are an attractive proposition for one.

I know it's not happening any time soon but always worth thinking about imo.

Will be like the old boot room at Liverpool, MacPhee will be like Bob Paisley and we'll just carry on winning.

What would be the point? He's more ingrained in the club than he's ever been. He's been given everything he wants, and he clearly has an extremely close relationship with Sawiris. He clearly wants to achieve his dreams with Villa, so why would he leave? Asnd how do you plan for who might be next, when you don't know who's going to be a fancied manger in 1, 2 or 5 years? De Zerbi was going to be the next big thing and was linked with Man U, Chelsea and Bayern at one point. Pochettino was the next big thing for years, now he's USA boss, etc.

I agree with Risso. I think this is just the start and he'll be here for years, but then, I've never had my heart broken.

TS (I know) this morning suggesting SUE’s growing reputation and profile could cause us problems in the near future particularly with Manure.
I call it out as bollocks and usual lazy/click bait journalism.

He’s already experienced what working for an incoherent club can result in.

I would put Man Utd under Small Heath under a list of clubs who could poach him. I'm honestly not sure which club could tempt him. They would have to be both huge and give him significant control, who would give him that nowadays?

This might be the most candid interview I have ever heard Unai give. Every point is bang on.

I don’t know if he’s the best manager in the world, he’s in the conversation definitely. But he is absolutely is the best manager for us and I think we’re the best club for him.

It's a bit of a Catch-22. While things are as brilliant as they currently are, why would he leave? There's a list of jobs more attractive than his current one that gets smaller with every new achievement that he does here.

I reckon that right now you could make an argument for Real Madrid, Man City and no others.

But if things stop being brilliant those clubs and the half dozen on the next rung down cross him off the list as he and us are no good anymore so they don't need to be interested in him.

Agreed. Guardiola's contract is ending at the end of this season (I think) and I'm not sure if the rumours are still there that Ancelotti is off to manage Brazil? They're the only two threats but he clearly loves it here.

I dont see either of those would really appeal to him - as I think he enjoys the challange.  Go to man city, and real madrid -  You inherit great teams and egos and everything you win isnt seen as an achievement.

Im not nieve enough to think nothing could tempt him.  But until, like you say, things stop going so well.  I think the owners know how good he is and are clearly buying into him in anyway they can to ensure hes here long term

I'm just scared mate. Sorry. I don't want to get the next appointment wrong and slide back down into shitness.

I agree with Risso - whats the point.  By the time he leaves we could be the most attractive job in world football.  I also think the owners are smart enough to have learnt the improtance of a good manager.  I cant see them making Gerrard type errors again

You could see he was absolutely fucking buzzing as he headed off down the tunnel at the end.

Well, quite but I don't understand why he always does that. Surely you want to drink in the atmosphere that you've been instrumental in creating. The ground was rocking, I want him back at the mic on the pitch and an "Up the Veella!", not scurrying back to the dressing room to crack one off to the highlights of Bologna against Liverpool. There are better ways of release, Unai, it's all I'm saying.
